JM, You have an interesting take. But your view that everyone is "equal" runs contrary to reality in so many ways that it is staggering. In line at 7-11, everyone is equal. You have to wait for the person who queued up in front of you, and everyone is going to pay the same amount for a Slurpee. But what about on an airliner in flight? The pilot is in charge because he is the one that knows how to fly the plane. People in first class have a more comfortable seat, because they paid for it. You can have a PhD, but if a high school drop out flight attendant tells you to do something, you do it. It's all based on the situation that exists at that moment. Have you ever played or watched sports? Some people are just a lot better than others. It's the same in school with class rankings. Some people ARE better than others, It's measurable. Even in the world of art it's measurable because some paintings go for millions, and some can't be given away, The reality is that some people have a lot of wealth and power because they put themselves in a situation to acquire it, and other people who had a say in the matter agreed with their specialness. We are all equal in the sense that we are all going to die someday. Religion worked so well for so long because everyone thought that they were going to face the same judgement from the same entity, for doing, or not doing the same things. Take the Great Beyond out of the picture and there is no reason why anyone should not try to be better than others.
Money is an antiquated system, I think ironically we are going backwards. Think about it, Barterquest.com, no tax collection. It is happening, people are using cash transactions, no taxing. Who takes care of those who can't take care of themselves when there is a lot less tax to pay for our Giant military, Healthcare, Welfare, who pays for vet benefits then, who pays for roads, bridges and everyone else employeed via government directly or indirectly. You see We The People will have to make a choice, are we for helping each others or not? I'm an optimist, I think people will and want to participate in a system dedicated to lifting up your fellow man, not because they get paid to do so, but because it's the right thing to do! It is happening, ready or not, be proactive, not reactive.
For some reason there are people on this planet that feel their contribution is somehow greater than anothers, it is the gravest mistake to think the president is more important than the peasent or that a man is more important to this planet than an ant. I don't understand why people don't believe they are Just equal. No more, No less. The entire world says "hey, I am one molecule in a universe of molecules" and no man is more important then that. That is why I struggle with the 99, because I believe there is only 1% of the people on this planet who don't truely want it to survive.
