I don't know what disgusts me more

1) People who are against this movement are using this poor girl, in fact taking delight in RAPE allegations, because they think it helps their cause to discredit Occupy

2) People who are supporting this movement are more concerned about distancing themselves from the crime than ensuring that the alleged rapist is brought in, that the case is investigated, that justice is done, and that SAFETY GUIDELINES are imposed and enforced on ALL Occupy sites, everywhere.

Look, as far as the trolls go, we expect this kind of behavior. We know the kind of person who would troll a forum, we know they are monsters. So whatever.

But for supporters of Occupy: re-prioritize. Yes, we must not only denounce this act and tell people this is not us, but FIRST we have get this investigated, and we have to ENSURE that nothing like this happens again at any Occupy movement, that SAFETY is assured for ALL participants.

To the monstrous trolls out there, go die in cave. The world won't miss you, not even a little bit. To the Occupy supporters, do better. We expect better of ourselves than worrying about how this makes the movement look. Make sure the Occupy Cleveland organizers demand that the police investigate, and make sure organizers everywhere strengthen safety standards. Worry about the fucking PR later.

[-] 4 points by LaoTzu (169) 12 years ago

Agreed. The Occupy Wall Street camp has Safety Guidelines that are enforced. All occupation camps should do the same to ensure the safety to their fellow 99%

Agree 100%. You called it.

[-] -3 points by Ihatehippies (17) 12 years ago

I like how you completely avoid the fact that a girl got raped...good job, I hope youre the next one to get raped.

[-] 1 points by TLydon007 (1278) 12 years ago

"I like how you completely avoid the fact that a girl got raped"

It's actually an allegation.

I think you proved his point that you people are taking delight in these rape allegations, otherwise you wouldn't eagerly assume that's what happened.

By the way, I sincerely hope neither you nor anybody gets raped in the future because something like that shouldn't bring anybody joy.

Wow, do commenters realize that this body of comments so far constitutes OWS's response to this alleged rape?

Speaking on behalf of all the OWS protesters I personally know: If a rape happened at an OWS event, it saddens and disgusts us terribly. We hope that it is investigated with the utmost diligence, intregity and honesty and that justice is done.

Rape and other acts of aggression are anathema to all we stand for

[-] 1 points by StevenRoyal (490) from Dania Beach, FL 12 years ago

No it doesn't. You want a response, then you need to get off your duff and ask someone who is part of the OWS in Cleveland. This board is merely a public board where anyone can post a comment, no matter how good, bad, vile, or indifferent, from the safety of their parents basement.

[-] 3 points by TheMismatch (50) from Lafayette, IN 12 years ago

First off, this is a tragedy. My heart goes out to her.

Second of all, if this is what went down, then Occupy might need to beef up it's quasi-security force that it has. I don't remember what the official name is (Peacekeepers?) but maybe just amp up the patrols so that we have more eyes and ears out in the camps, looking for shady dealings.

Third of all, trolls will use this for ammo against us because they're grabbing at straws. There's a risk of this sort of thing at any very large gathering. Let the police do their work, and until then, carry yourselves as you would at any crowded venue: don't accept drinks from strangers, stay in a space where many people can see you, and don't go into a strange tent with a stranger, no matter what organizers say. Your own safety comes before their sleeping-arrangement-convenience.

[-] 3 points by 666isMONEY (348) 12 years ago

Here's another story: "The victim is a student at Summit Academy in Parma, a school, the police report said, that is for children with attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity and autism."

That asshole. He's gonna screw it up for all of us now! wtf why didn't she say something at the time!?

[-] 2 points by ThatAutisticGirl (150) from Alameda, CA 12 years ago

I don't think the problem here is that the rapist has supposedly ruined our movement the problem here is that someone raped a woman! As far as having our movement tarnished: For fuck's sake, if our movement can't withstand a little shit flinging than we were doomed before we started.

[-] -3 points by joewealthyhaha (152) 12 years ago

so youre calling a 19 yr old that says she was raped an asshole? I am sure none of us 1% would ever take that view.

[-] 1 points by meatwad2000 (83) 12 years ago

she said "He's"

[-] 1 points by Meeky (186) from Los Angeles, CA 12 years ago

No yasmine meant the supposed rapist.

Stupid ambiguity.

[-] 1 points by yasminec001 (584) 12 years ago

There are more important matters at hand.

What that asshole (being the rapist, guys) did is despicable, but so is the suffering of everyone across this world. I don't think it was appropriate to room a 19-year-old girl with a man, but then again it's all chaotic.

I don't understand why she didn't say anything immediately afterwards. It sounds very sketchy.

But please guys, let's not get unfocused here. We need to start caring about eachother, even if we don't agree with eachother.

[-] 2 points by cheeseus (109) 12 years ago

So, this just reminds everyone to be careful. It doesn't mean OWS are rapists. The protests, while organized by operatives, are still in public places which anyone can join in. You will get some individual lunatics. It's similar to the Tea Party. You had a couple of people with insensitive signs and the whole movement was wrongly accused of being racist.

[-] 2 points by joerauh (32) 12 years ago

perhaps OWS Cleveland should do a teach-in on rape and safety, or something else to respond to this.

it's a clear teachable moment, better to own it and overcome than to avoid it?

[-] 2 points by riethc (1149) 12 years ago

[-] 2 points by gtyper (477) from San Antonio, TX 12 years ago

I can believe that this may have happened, but if it did happen then this is the doings of a person not the movement.

The naivety of youth to assume that everyone is a good person will lead to this. The good news is this was an isolated incident and took over a month to happen -- if it did, in fact, happen.

with your logic, I'll believe the crimes of wall street when I see a conviction and not a second sooner.

[-] 2 points by Mcc (542) 12 years ago

There have already been dozens of convictions. However, it's apples and oranges. We have a mountain of evidence to prove most of our allegations about Wall Street. You have no evidence to support this allegation of rape. The allegation itself is not evidence. Show me some evidence.

[-] 0 points by meatwad2000 (83) 12 years ago

I agree with spidey, what an ass. I'm sure every 19 y/o out there is dying to testify on a rape trial. this is a about the people not your ideology, clown.

I'm surprised more of this isn't happening or at least reported. Why on God's green earth would they think a 19 year old girl sharing a tent with a man was a good idea? Seriously? I would have just let her sleep in it and made my own arrangements, that could have been my daughter.

[-] 1 points by JenLynn (692) 12 years ago

Doesn't mean a thing, crime doesn't go away. Criminals go where the opportunity is. Doesn't matter if it's true or a false allegation, it has nothing to do with the movement. There are people stealing things, there are fights. That's bad, but it's life, there are always bad people hiding in among the rest of us. You planning on shutting down any place where there is a rape?

[-] 1 points by Jelm430 (87) 12 years ago

This is making me sick. This act is horrible your response and others are worse ,I understand push back from a horrible claim as one of the stages of denial but we have to act as they are real until proven other wise. For all the trolls that like this whole event I know you will get yours.

This does not in any way reflect the #OWS.

[-] 1 points by Nulambda (265) 12 years ago

I guess this might be out of line to suggest, and my sympathies go out to the victim. But, I wantto suggest that maybe this is a tactic from our enemy to inspire fear in the movement, cause mistrust in the public, and distract from the protest.

I would like to think that the powers that be would not stoop to such barbarism, but when you look at their behavior in foreign countries, I do not think this theory is not pausable. Just a warning. Be mindful. And watch your backs.

I hope this girl recovers from this really harmful experience and hope that this one incident is not used to the advantage of smear campaigners. If you want some real statistics andrescepeda then here, knock yourself out:

Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. Here's the math. According to the U.S. Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey -- the country's largest and most reliable crime study -- there were 248,300 sexual assaults in 2007 (the most recent data available).

There are 525,600 minutes in a non-leap year. That makes 31,536,000 seconds/year. So, 31,536,000 divided by 248,300 comes out to 1 sexual assault every 127 seconds, or about 1 every 2 minutes.

Ok several things:

  1. I hope that this is allowed to be investigated fully, and that OWS Cleavland will help the police in this investigation, rather than hinder.
  2. I hope that ALL OWS rallies are taking steps to ensure that this never happens again.
  3. I was always afraid that this would happen, I hope that lessons will be learned from this.
  4. It should be made clear to all that if this did happen, that OWS will support the police in prosecuting those involved, even if it involves the OWS leadership at Cleavland.

[-] 1 points by LibertyFirst (325) 12 years ago

Right. Demand your student loans are forgiven, demand changes in government, but when one of your own is raped, demand more proof, throw aspersions that the victim is a plant, suggest she's a liar. "oh, well, if the police are investigating it I'm sure it's fine". Relying on the system you are protesting? Seriously? So much for human compassion.

I have been trying really hard to support his movement, but you guys don't seem to have any sense of personal responsibility. Instead of outrage and action to ensure this doesn't happen again, you all seem to want o sweep it under the rug and suggest the victim is at fault. "Take care of me" while you won't take care of your own. This makes me almost as angry as I am at the bankers. If this is the best you can muster, this movement is not what I thought it was.

[-] 1 points by Jelm430 (87) 12 years ago

Yes, there are bastards like that in the world who will sweep it under the rug but others won't.This shouldn't happen to anyone in this country not at occupy not at anywhere else.I want a resolution on this as every right minded member of this organization. She was a victim first and foremost.

[-] 1 points by StellaDiLuna (0) 12 years ago

Has anyone asked if any other person was asked to share tents? Shouldn't that be the first question before jumping to conclusions on either side?

[-] 1 points by anotherone773 (734) from Carlyle, IL 12 years ago

It was probably staged for bad publicity. The govt is trying their hardest to shut us down secretly or publicly and still make it look legal.

[-] 2 points by ThatAutisticGirl (150) from Alameda, CA 12 years ago

If she said she was raped then we ought to believe her! The accused rapist, of course, deserves a fair trail by his peers as is his right. However, we, not being his jury, have the responsibility to believe someone when they say they were raped. End of story.

[-] 0 points by anotherone773 (734) from Carlyle, IL 12 years ago

Just because she claims it? My ex g/f who was a nut. one day yelled that i as raping her out the kitchen window while we was arguing. I was standing 15 feet from her in the living room. My neighbor heard it and ignored her. I am glad she( my neighbor) has enough sense to make that judgment call.

It is known that the FBI, cops, govt, etc all have people undercover in the movement. This is what our govt does for a living ... it invades peoples lives without any right too because they see themselves as some high and mighty self rightous demigods.

I can guarantee you the FBI is watching this site and might even be posing as a poster on it. To make sure we are not a "threat". A threat to who? Its our **ing country, not the politicians and corporations. They just illegally took it over and they should be the ones that they are so secretly( and obviously failing) watching. The FBI and all these cops should be working for us not the govt. We pay their wages. The govt pays nothing.

I am pretty sure this is staged. Might go through a mock trial, dude gets some time but either gets a nice payday when he gets out or never makes it to prison and his record gets wiped cleaned.

[-] 1 points by StillaFlowerChild (2) 12 years ago

You are very correct. I am an old war horse from the anti-war movement of the '60s and you better believe we were infiltrated by the FBI and accusations such as these were rampant. This is not to say that something terrible didn't happened to this young woman and my heart goes out to her and I hope that her attacker is caught and prosecuted. But, do not for one moment doubt that lies and stories will be presented as truth from politicians and goverment officials and the media as this movement gains more ground. I have the FBI file on myself to prove it.

[-] 1 points by anotherone773 (734) from Carlyle, IL 12 years ago

Yeah but this has been going on a month( the movement) and now all the sudden we hear about people in the movement stealing and raping people. After a month? And all this comes out so close together? Cops are getting sloppy with timing. I know this movement is being heavily monitored from the inside and out. I am sure IP addresses are being recorded, etc.

We dont get rid of this police state soon we will all be in gitmo for exercising our first amendment right. I am surprised we havent be declared terrorists yet for wanting out country back.

I love my country, I just hate the people who have ran it (in the ground) for last few decades. They ruined a once great nation with their greed.

[-] 0 points by imrational (527) 12 years ago

exactly! If people organizing that rally/occupation put women in tents with men they did not know previously... it was a serious error on their part.

It's a tragedy all around, but those specific organizers are going to have to deal with the guilt for the rest of their lives.

As to the perpetrator, he needs to be charged and held accountable.

[-] 0 points by AN0NYM0US (640) 12 years ago

Really? SHE IS 19!

"Hey I know you want to spend the night... but we only have one tent left and some guy has it, you could share with him or go home" "I'll sleep with the stranger"

That, my law friends, is a clear and concise independent intervening cause. No fault of OC because she thought it was safe to sleep with a male stranger. It isn't safe to sleep out in public in general! I'm suprised more rapes (from outside sources) haven't happened!

So here is how it is:

1) It's a lie. 2) He was waiting for this, abusing the fact that people were camping in public. 3) She was raped by a stranger, a terrible thing, but nothing that has anything to do with OC. Let there be an investigation. That guy should go to jail if he did it. Hopefully OC has some list of names since they knew that tent was free.

[-] 0 points by imrational (527) 12 years ago

Really. It doesn't matter if she was 19 or 43. There is no public agency that would put strangers of the opposite sex in the same sleeping quarters alone together. Jails, hospitals, FEMA, etc... they all have policies regarding this. It was a serious oversight by that city's OWS organizers.

[-] 0 points by KarlGrouchoMarx (1) 12 years ago

Rape is no more crime as per new world system "OWS"

[-] 0 points by AN0NYM0US (640) 12 years ago

Your Prison to OWS comparison is lacking to say the least....

In Prison: YOUR WILL DOESN'T MATTER!

In a public camping space: You are 19! You can decide if you want to sleep in a tent alone with a stranger! They didn't force her. They said, "Yo, we only have one tent left, another guy has it. " She is old enough to say "fuck that, I'll go home and come back tomorrow."

[-] 2 points by jbell78 (152) 12 years ago

She is a special needs child...oversight on OWS's part for sure.

[-] 1 points by AN0NYM0US (640) 12 years ago

How are they to know that? I say her parents or special needs school, who knew that, should have made sure she was safe and not wandering about and sleeping on the streets.

Hey we're talking about a 19 Y/O girl that was out there supporting OWS. Nice to see how fast people here turn against her. Point taken.

[-] 2 points by Maggie (2) 12 years ago

Why would a 19 year old girl be asked to share a tent with a man that is a total stranger? This needs to be investigated.

[-] 1 points by thebeastchasingitstail (1912) 12 years ago

According to a news report I read online, the people at the occupation denied assigning people to specific tents. There could have been someone posing as an authority figure who misled this girl, that is one possibility I suppose.

That said, I do worry about naive young people showing up to participate in the protests. Sleeping outside is risky, marching is risky - risk of arrest - fine if you consciously accept the risk of arrest but if a naive person shows up, thinking they're doing something lawful and are somehow misled (the bklyn bridge incident, so many people in a crowd those in the back don't know what is really going on and just follow).

I think any responsible, caring adults present need to be watchful for the younger people who are around and take a little extra responsibility to educate and be aware of danger on their behalf.

[-] -1 points by KnowledgeableFellow (471) 12 years ago

So you are admitting to a large number of sheeple in your group who have no freaking idea why they are there.

[-] 1 points by thebeastchasingitstail (1912) 12 years ago

I am expressing adult concern for what can happen in large crowds of over 800 people, especially to the young and naive, but also to more experienced adults.

[-] 0 points by KnowledgeableFellow (471) 12 years ago

But wait.....I read elsewhere on this site that the Brooklyn Bridge incident was the result of blatant police brutality.

Do any of you guys bother reading the articles before you fire off comments? All of your questions are clearly answered in the article. She reported it to her teachers 2 days later and the teachers immediately alerted authorities.

Thank you for your post! I have asked the same question. Please be assured that the fact that any one person stands up or marches for all the right reason doesn't make everything that happens good. It does not take a large crowd for aggression to rear itself in the most heinous forms. We deal with predators day to day, they are called predators for a reason. Keep the camps safe! Learn from this, protect yourselves and don’t rest in dangerous laurels. Where there is good evil lurks. There is no such thing as a good person but there are those among us with good hearts because we work at it. This is what I mean when I say over and over again, keep fighting the good fight and keep it righteous. The fastest way to shut down light is to overcome it with darkness. Don’t assume that everyone there at any of the OWS sites are there with good intentions. If you camp in the woods and don’t take time to store your food items properly eventually a bear or mountain lion will join you at your camp site. So watch over your children, your young people and vulnerable adults! It is everyone’s responsibility to contribute accordingly to the welfare of this revolution. Decay is inevitable when those who’s responsibility it is to keep watch are sleeping. God bless you one and all! Keep fighting the good fight! Keep it righteous! Keep it safe! Keep it peaceful, Don’t keep it secret! Stay warm, dry and safe!

Setup. Disinfo. Propaganda.

Do not think every thing set up. People think OWS is also Union setup to blame corporations. We have to take action.

[-] 1 points by QuietDay (59) 12 years ago

I don't understand the over-defensiveness and paranoia that rears it's head whenever concerns are expressed about safety, conditions or criminal behaviour at OWS sites. It's not an attack on the movement. The ability to take critique on board should be an integral part of this movement so that people's rights and personal safety are taken care of.

Worldwide, 1 in 4 women are sexually assaulted. It's not entirely beyond the realms of possibility that women are being sexually assaulted or raped at OWS. At least one man has already been arrested. The response and care that victims receive after this crime can impact immensely on their recovery. Therefore, it shouldn't be left to a bunch of protesters to decide how to respond to it. The police should be called immediately if that's what the victim wants. Protesters should not be encouraging victims to keep quiet 'for the good of the cause'. Nor should they attempt to silence women by insinuating that they're trying to discredit the cause with false accusations.

Violence and oppression are not just something that corporations, governments, police or other authorities commit. It's committed on an individual level too. Remember 'the personal is political'? If we can't self reflect and challenge attitudes and behaviours on a personal level then this movement will fail.

I do not know who is our major spokesman. We should condemn it with strong words. That is the problem every body is spokesman. This is bad for our movement. We should immediately have press release.

“One of the speakers said the solution is nonviolent movement. No, my friend. I’ll give you two examples: French Revolution, and Indian so-called Revolution.Gandhi, Gandhi today is, with respect to all of you, Gandhi today is a tumor that the ruling class is using constantly to mislead us. French Revolution made fundamental transformation. But it was bloody. India, the result of Gandhi, is 600 million people living in maximum poverty. So, ultimately, the bourgeoisie won’t go without violent means. Revolution! Yes, revolution that is led by the working class. Long live revolution! Long live socialism!” Here is the video Ultimately violence will be necessary, says Occupy L.A. speaker http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qlPY9AfQFqI

any of you idiots read yesterdays wall street journal? (of course not) well a story in there talks about the results of polling 200 of you morons. here's what they said: 70% of you want wealth redistribution, 58% would advocate violence to get what you want, only 15% of you are unemployed (that stat surprised me) and an overwhelming majority of you voted for Obama, but prob wont vote for him again. in short, the writer concludes that essentially this is a radical left wing movement that has the potential to turn violent. my guess is a violent marxist group wont last long in this country. good luck idiots!

Within every group of any kind, you have individuals. These individuals make INDIVIDUAL decisions. To assume one's actions, desires, and thoughts are the same as everyone else's in that given group is inappropriate.

It's like saying all Republicans are 'bible thumpers' just because a select number of them display characteristics/actions associated with a 'bible thumper'. It is a childish assumption.

And our movement is not only about economics. It is about the unneccessary suffering of ANYONE across this globe. If you love someone, you would understand.

By the way, no matter what you reply to this, I still love you.
