The Struggle Continues! May 2nd Brooklyn College Education Convergence

Posted 12 years ago on May 2, 2012, 3:32 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

CUNY Students on May Day
Brooklyn College students at May Day General Strike!

Another University is Possible. Today, May 2nd, students from across NYC will be joining together at the Brooklyn College Campus to take back our future from the 1%. Hundreds of students will be staging a continuation of May Day and the Free University by taking over the Quad at Brooklyn College with teach-ins, political theater, food, music, and events to show an alternative university. While subsidies, tax breaks, and corporate loopholes continue to exist allowing banks and corporations to make record profits, slashes to education have resulted in students paying more and more in CUNY while receiving less and less.

Noon, Wednesday - May 2, 2012
Brooklyn College Quad (Next to the library and Bell Tower)

Schedule:
12:00: Sign Making, Music, Student Loan Debt Balloons
12:30: Political Theater: Wedding of CUNY Chancellor Goldstein + Kroll Security Group
1:00: Student Speakers, Reading of Solidarity Statements from Naomi Klein, Noam Chomsky, and The Quebec Student Strike.
1:30: March
2: 00: Free Lunch and Free University teach-ins: David Graeber, and others! - Many from the May Day Free University

Directions:

  • 2,5 Train to Flatbush Ave/Brooklyn College, Walk one block West on Hillel Place
  • B,Q Train to Ave H. Walk Four Blocks East on Ave H to the Campus Road (If security guards are assholes, then walk to another entrance. We will have tenure faculty at some of the entrances ensuring people get in.)

Solidarity Statement from Naomi Klein and Noam Chomsky, May 1st, 2012:

“All around the world, young people are leading resistance movements against repressive governments and repressive economic policies, from the Arab Spring, to Occupy Wall Street, to the Spanish Indignados, and countless other protest movements around the globe. It is right that young people are at the center of these movements, since it is your futures that are being stolen by austerity budgets, reckless environmental policies and discriminatory immigration laws. In Chile and Quebec, student strikes and protests have transformed into mass social movements, ones that raise profound questions about the fundamental injustices of their societies and raise real hopes for transformation. With your actions, you at Brooklyn College are joining this inspiring global uprising against a collapsing system and we are proud to stand in solidarity with you.”

The woman in red is not from Brooklyn College. Her and the guy with the green shirt are part of a different organization called "Revolutionary Student Coordinating Committee" and it's a CUNY-wide coalition. I am making this clarification because there are some very important political differences between the people who organized this event at Brooklyn College and the RSCC. Please see our website below.

How can you continue to do this when things like this exist:

http://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm

You don't have to shout at colleges for better rates when alternatives exist.

You people have shown your true color red. To have your little hissy fit on may 1, we all know that unlike the movement that happend in Chicago in the 1800s. Your movement is more closely related to the communist movement that high jacked the name and the date, just as other things have been high jacked in tje past and used for the opposite reason. You all claim to be representing the 99%. Well your wrong you bunch are a fringe maybe 1/2 %. We have all heard of the drug use and raping of women and of the sex parties you have in your camps. If you bunch want to live in a communist or socialist society by all means move. Go there and stay see how you feel in a few years about your new homeland. You see here in our Capitalistic society if you work and apply yourself you can advance. That is why so many peoples from around the world try and come here even illegally. You people cause so much trouble and for nothing. You that helped get obama elected. Hope you feel proud about helping so many lose their jobs, homes and even familys. It is his economic policys that he has made to bring America down and you idiots that helped him. Now your complaining about the very people that bring jobs and resorces to our country. It is you people that cause goverment to grow always with your hand out streched wanting demanding that goverment gives more. I hate to be the one that has to tell you it aint goverments to give. Tax dollars from working Americans unlike you are what funds the goverment. We can not afford to keep up people that only wants hand outs. Here is a concept work for what you get. When the social security was set up there were 100 working Americans for every person receivong social security. When jfk took office he and his bunch started robbing the system (social security) to fund social programs that should have been better left to church groups and communitys. Now because so many generations of people here in America think someone else owes them a living and the goverment wants people to have to depend upon it so they in goverment can control you better and because of your hero obama who has been taking vacations on our dime oh and his wife and because he has expanded welfare to a greater number of people there are now only 2.5 working Americans for every person on social security . You people and your little hissy fits cause nothing but damage and social unrest. You cause working Americans to have to work harder to fund over time for police departments and fire departments, to replace the public property you destroy and of course your jail time and burdening of our justice system. Do not think for a minute we working Americans are falling for your little tricks were you do something to cause the police to have to arrest you but you only film the police doing their jobs. You hope that your gaining sympathy but your not. What you are causing is disgust towards you and your movement. We all know you want your communist system even though they usually only bring with them either one personor a small group over a country ruling with an iron fist starving the masses. Maybe that is your leaderships desires the ones you never see the founders of your movement. Ultimately they want to be the next stalin and polet bureu, or mow sae tung. You communist in America just haven't read all your history. The millions that communist leaders have killed in their own countries just to gain control. Your followers are so disbelieving that anything like could happen to the in this country they think your so pure. They forget the very system they strive for in order to survive has to kill of leaders of communities just so communisum can exist. Yes step that goverment up make your hero obama the king or premere of the country and then watch as your teachers, doctors and other love people of your communities are taken out and shot or they just disappear never to be seen again. It has happend in your loved communist countries. No you people disgust the rest of us. Go get a job and quit crying because your not a millionare, at least here in America you have a chance. Reread the Constitution it says nothing of the goverment having to powder and diaper your but, give you a pacifier or anything else. It does limit and spell out the exact role of the goverment that is the very thing your hero obama hates about the Constitution that is why he and pelosi and others like them want to do away with it. They gain control over you the very minute they can get rid of it. Do you actually believe these people would have the nations citizens interest at heart and care for the people please, they like killing babies why your boy obama signed and sponcerd a bill that while in senate that if a baby made it through the hell of an abortion the doctor could with hold medical treatment and burishment from a living viable baby in short kill it. Look it up that must have been a real priority for him he actually showed up for work that day. Anyway in short you all do not represent me or my family or many others so you need to change your banners to reading the fringe 1/2% or communist party cause you are not 99% what you really are is anarchist. We the people see through your BS and see you for what you really are

Another satisfied customer. Go on, keep preaching to protect your 1%er masters. It won't silence us or the growing dissent.

[-] 3 points by JadedCitizen (4277) 12 years ago

Really, the number one issue brought up by Occupy is income inequality and 2/3 of the country agree with raising the taxes on the rich. The only fringe group in this country is the extreme right wing, which seems to be the entire republican party at this point who denies basic science and facts, and has declared a war on the environment, workers, women, & pretty much everything else. You're hardly worthy of being a citizen of this nation, because you clearly don't understand it.

[-] 2 points by AChildSooninChains (11) 12 years ago

I don't think that the Democratic party is in touch with the needs of the American populace either but you're absolutely right about the Republicans.

[-] 1 points by JadedCitizen (4277) 12 years ago

The democrats are out of touch, which is a problem no doubt, but the republicans are just plain out of their minds, which is downright fucking scary.

How are they anarchists if they want "big government"?

Next time think before you type.

[-] 2 points by AChildSooninChains (11) 12 years ago

I'm just trying to get it straight. Is the problem that the Occupy protestors are communist (like you say repeatedly in your rant) or anarchist (like you say they are at the end)? They can't be both, they are two different isms. Perhaps you should read this: http://occupywallst.org/article/occupy-wall-streets-anarchist-roots/

Anyway, your smug tone and the fact that you keep mentioning that these students are asking for handouts shows you must be delusional. The 1% are the ones who asked for hand outs (TARP funds). Now students are just saying don't raise tuition (and other austerity measures) to pay the rich more bonuses (which is what TARP funds ended up being). It's not asking for a hand out, it's asking for what is yours (and theirs). The American attitude that the rich deserve bailouts but if the poor (or middle class) ask for what is rightfully theirs (pensions they were promised, not having to pay for state budget cuts used to bailout lenders, etc.) they are asking for a handout is something I'll never understand.

[-] 3 points by m4trix87 (71) 12 years ago

Actually, even free market ideology (capitalism) contradicts handouts to corporations!

What we have now is even worse: Corporatism (= the economic side of fascism)

This is a new concept to me but sounds exactly like what's going on the US. Thanks for that.

I am sure over the next few you years you will get poorer.....because the path that the USA is following at the moment is one of terminal decline and its good to have dissenting voices heard, that is what democracy is all about.....here educate yourself then perhaps you will not spout all this BS....
