#S17 Solidarity From the Global South: Stop Financial Speculation on Food and Climate

Global South Solidarity)

The fight of Occupy Wall Street is the struggle of all movements in the world. Finance capital, that created the crisis in 2008, has increased its power instead of being disciplined. At present, world GDP is 64 trillion US dollars while the derivatives market reached the incredible figure of 1,500 trillion US dollars in 2011. The speculative economy is 250 times larger than the real economy of the world. Now banks and Transnational corporations (TNCs) are moving to speculate on the impacts of the climate and environmental crises that the capitalist system has created. Prices of food are beginning to climb again because of climate change and speculation in a world where 1 billion people already suffer from hunger. The banks and TNCs like Cargill, Wal-Mart, Monsanto are seeing this situation as a new opportunity to make profits through food derivatives, natural resource grabbing, GMOs, agro-fuels, free trade agreements, structural adjustments, austerity plans and other mechanisms to increase the privileges of the 1% at the expenses of the 99% of the world and at tremendous cost to our Mother Earth.

From 15 to 17th of September, in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street, we will raise our voices and promote actions to ban derivatives in food, dismantle the power of the banks and TNCs, stop the privatization of water and public services, cancel the illegitimate debts that are strangling our sisters and brothers in Europe, achieve deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and restore a life in harmony with nature.

Earlier it was awesome to see coverage at the occupy Minnesota homes - Bobby Hall was there and announced a trip going to washington to address the foreclosure of homes without any attempt by the banks to work with the home buyers to remain in their homes - also after the banks advised that they could not help unless the home owner was behind in their payments - then people following this advice were then foreclosed without any attempt to work with them by the bank.

Are you going to allow this Yahoo article to besmear this great movement? Don't take issue with the article's author or with people who were interviewed. There may be some frustration and everyone is entitled to their say. The article is biased however; there is nothing wrong with a leaderless, multi-issue movement. This movement belongs to the people- everyone should be and is represented. There is community and participation over title and ego. And the movement has so much promise exactly because it takes issue with everything wrong in the world. More often than not, these various problems have a common chord or source. Do ensure another, fair-minded, representative article makes its way to the public. http://news.yahoo.com/1-occupy-disarray-spirit-lives-161622760.html

there is maybe one meeting on, in your words, "women's issues, racism, and classism". "Women's issues" should instead be called "sexism". Why single-out women's suppression from other types? Why question its existence? At best, use of the term "women's issues" implies that all that is needed is a "women's group" to handle things important to them. At worst, it implies such issues are the business of women only and there is no suppression.. Change of course won't occur in such a scenario. Obviously men are to be engaged. Everyone of course must be held accountable, especially those doing the suppressing, as is implied by the terms "racism" "classism", and "sexim". You need to change your verbiage and apparently your mindset. "Women's issues" isn't a catch-all phrase.

1% continue to commit the crime of speculating in food and water.Let me speculate on the 1%---they shall vanish---soon.The key word of 1% is 'control'.What we have to do is to decontrol the system which can be done by using all the modern means of communication.

The elite must be insane. Literally.

To see the death of the world as a profit opportunity. I've read sci-fi novels more realistic then what is happening now.
