I am a self employed sole proprietor of a small antique repair shop, I also build furniture. My wife use to be the Executive Director of a small foundation which she ran from home for ten years, until the foundation folded last year. She now has a 20 hour a week job in town with no benefits.
We are not "upside down" in our mortgage and we manage to squeak by every month although in the winter the oil bills are difficult to manage in our old farm house.
We are both in our 50's and neither of us has had health insurance for the last eight years. We simply can't afford it. EVERY PENNY we have ever earned is tied up in our home and knowing we could loose it all tomorrow to one major illness is very disheartening.
