I asked about illness a couple weeks ago, if anyone was planning on what to do about disease. Between the number of people camped close together and lowered immune systems it's going to be disease heaven real soon.

[-] 1 points by hollatchaboy (55) 13 years ago

i don't think the flu shot will do anything, to me this sounds a lot more like tuberculosis...the best protection would be a medical mask

[-] 0 points by MissBirdy (-78) from Thornwood, NY 13 years ago

They need to go home...They are physically and mentally ill from what I've seen on TV...(also drove by a couple of times....kept my windows rolled up...don't want to get sick breathing their air)

[-] 1 points by Revolutionary (311) 13 years ago

We can use medicine from vegetable sources like 3 to 5 gm ginger ,olive two pieces with a cup of green/tea three times daily for three days preferably on empty stomach.

[-] 1 points by mserfas (652) from Ashland, PA 13 years ago

Ginger is pretty effective for preventing vomiting, for example, if you're planning chemotherapy or a trip on a ferry boat. ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20842754 ) The Mythbusters preferred it over Dramamine ( http://mythbustersresults.com/episode43 ).

However, if you're at all worried about catching a foodborne bacterial illness, I think that reducing your body's reflex to vomit is a very bad idea! The same also applies to marijuana. I definitely do not want to see the precedent of the encampments being dispersed, but people there must take the public health issues very seriously.

Modern medicine is just yet trying to know as to how the plant medicine works.

[-] -1 points by MissBirdy (-78) from Thornwood, NY 13 years ago

excellent Idea.. however unsure if this will do anything about, STD's, pneumonia... They have no way to boil H2O either.

[-] 1 points by Revolutionary (311) 13 years ago

Thanks, one can use Dettol or other antiseptic to wash privates. However, most of the infections can be prevented by the use of certain vegetables/vegetable products or other plant products.Like we have tamarind , green tea of different kinds, mint(dry or green) and many others both dry and green which you can see in the vegetable market for example you can use 30 gm of tamarind plus 10 gm green tea plus 3gm dry mint by adding to one liter water and boil for 5 minutes and adding salt /sugar to taste .Then using 10 ml at a time.you can add a few drops of lemon to make it reduce its bitterness.

Strep pyogenes and TB couldn't care less about veggies/ginger/tea.

Jack the ER Doc says Zuccotti is an "18th Century military encampment."

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

It would probably be a good idea to ask sypathetic health care professionals to donate a little time. Spending protracted periods outdoors definitly weakens people and leaves them vulnerable to disease, particularly pnumonia. Just put out a call and they will come.

[-] 1 points by Permanushka (24) from Elk Creek, CA 13 years ago

Sorry..you're right h2o2....I mis-typed. Of course, food gets rinsed in water.after soaking in h2o2. h2o2 oxygenates. Gardeners use it frequently to clean and enhance plant growth and to clean gardening tools.

As to Flu shots, there is a point at which one builds up a resistance to them. I used to get a shot every year and every year, like clockwork, I would get the Flu anyway. Stopped the shots 10 years ago in favor of natural preventatives and haven't had the Flu since.

[-] 1 points by Permanushka (24) from Elk Creek, CA 13 years ago

Prevention of sickness should be a priority.

!. Gargling or spraying mouth with Sea Salt will prevent 60% of transmission of bacteria.

  1. A drop or 2 of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O) in the ears, tilting head from side to side will help prevent illnesses.

  2. Washing hands with a solution of H2O and water prevents transmission. Should be a requirement of everyone on a food line, The cost of a free, donated meal should not be pneumonia.

  3. Eating Garlic, Onions and Tumeric . Also masks "camp smell".

  4. Soaking raw food for 10 minutes in a 1 part H2O to 8 parts water gets rid of e coli, bacteria and pesticides.

  5. H2O in final rinse of dishes, utensils, etc. Or Spray after washing.

  6. Place blankets, clothes in clear plastic and set out in sun for several hours to solarize (disinfect).

  7. Soak feet in Epsom Salts and warm water.

  8. "Wash" hair by scrubbing in dry cornmeal followed by combing.

[-] 2 points by Mooks (1985) 13 years ago

H2O is water, hydrogen peroxide is H2O2. And H2O2 kills bacteria by releasing free radicals, which also can cause mutations that lead to cancer. I would not eat anything soaked in it. If your food has e.coli in it, I just wouldn't eat it.

A lot of the diseases that would be spread down there are likely viral, especially the upper respiratory ones. If people start contracting bacteria like e. coli and salmonella via fecal-oral transmission then people need to ask themselves why they are living like animals.

[-] -1 points by MissBirdy (-78) from Thornwood, NY 13 years ago

great info some group should you send them care packages.. oh yeah they have $ 75,000. they can get it themselves.

[-] -1 points by mynameismoe (153) 13 years ago

And have mommy come down and wipe your lazy butt.

[-] -1 points by KahnII (170) 13 years ago

You're clueless.

[-] 1 points by GypsyKing (8708) 13 years ago

It's cold and flue season.

[-] 0 points by sppratam (-14) 13 years ago

It's also flea and tick season.

[-] 1 points by mserfas (652) from Ashland, PA 13 years ago

Despite the malicious tone of the coverage and comments, one thing should be clear: maintaining public health at the camp, vaccinations for flu and pneumonia, doing tests for tuberculosis should indeed be of the highest priority. I mean testing and treatment, not dispersing people because some of them are sick. The problem is, if people accept that it is alright to crush political dissent under the guise of "removing a potential source of disease", they'll be trying it next to ban homeless shelters and soup kitchens and anywhere else the poor might congregate. I know OWS has money, and there are programs meant to find and wipe out disease like tuberculosis - Zucotti Park can set a precedent for intervening, treating, and stopping the spread of disease rather than for trying to keep it out of sight like some Third World dictatorship.

[-] 1 points by gestopomillyy (1695) 13 years ago

there should be screening.. the people that are sick should be transferred to a health facility. absolutely not 'dispersed'.

[-] 0 points by anony1 (50) 13 years ago

The best way to stop the spread of a disease is social distancing. So, yes, dispersal is the best way. Certainly, if a person is diagnosed with the flu or lets say TB then he shouldnt be around that encampment any longer.

Disease spreads like wild-fire and if you dont use the "dispersal" method then it will be deadly and could effect population centers.

[-] 0 points by HowdyDoodyTime (27) from Brooklyn, NY 13 years ago

I heard they wont take flu shots...b/c they think the govt is trying to poison them.

Paranoia is highly common within this group,

Check out the link below to the current article in New York magazine about the current rat outbreak!

Any city, especially a densely populated one like New York City has a significant but largely hidden rat population. Having raised 5 rats in a shared cage at one time I know for a fact that with the volume of rat poop they would make after a day in school I just KNOW that everyone in NYC and any city like it is breathing alot of dried rat poop since nobody is going around cleaning up after the hidden rat population! Ie: If you're breathing unseen dried rat poop particulate there's a good chance of lung irritation, allergic reaction and outright disease caused by fungi and other diseases that rat poop can carry and staying outside in Zucotti park or living among the homeless elsewhere in the city you're definitely increasing your risk for repiratory conditions!

http://nymag.com/news/features/rats-2011-11/ Why rats are having a renaissance:New York Magazine

Big Scary Ugly Dirty Rats

They’re everywhere—but they always were.

By Mark Jacobson Published Oct 30, 2011 Quote:"We are apparently in the midst of one of New York’s periodic rat outbreaks. If there are 8 million stories in the Naked City, maybe half of them are rat stories; uptown and down, everyone seems to have one. Rats have been reported overrunning playgrounds, burrowing in children’s sandboxes, dropping from trees in Tompkins Square Park. On the Upper West Side, residents say rats have “formed a conga line” in Verdi Square (née Needle Park) on 72nd Street. Local TV crews have run outraged exclusives about rats living across from the Plaza Hotel."

native American blankets...Ah, smallpox, no big...

[-] 0 points by KahnII (170) 13 years ago

Looks like the biggest accomplishment of OWS is going to be creating a drug resistant infection.

Some protesters have refused free flu shots, citing a "government conspiracy," the Times said.

[-] 0 points by sppratam (-14) 13 years ago

Their refusal is a one-way ticket out of the gene pool.

they need flu shots and psychiatric evaluations. they appear to be a of bunch infected, deranged people. And Bloomberg is useless.

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 13 years ago

How do you know?

After Tuskegee,

After PB Pills and Gulf War Syndrome,

After "Washout Therapy" conducted in Boston on the mentally ill with adverse affects including suicide

After mkultra;

how do you know?

I got my flu shot - from my regular doctor. While that cannot negate all risk, at least he knows me, and if things go bad, well. He may at least have the opportunity to look me in the eye and explain why.

[-] 0 points by roloff (244) 13 years ago

I don't man, I heard the government is messing with the weed dude.

[-] -1 points by MissBirdy (-78) from Thornwood, NY 13 years ago

I was just hypothesizing from what I have seen and read. The people @ Zuccotti seem mentally and physically unwell (sick)

[-] 1 points by ZenDogTroll (13032) from South Burlington, VT 13 years ago

Haven't seen it. Is what you saw an accurate reflection of reality - or careful cinematography ?

[-] -1 points by KahnII (170) 13 years ago

Most were like that before the protests.

Lets see..Filthy people, living in filth, shitting in buckets, wiping their snot on their sleeve and sleeping bags, . How could this happen?

[-] 0 points by HowdyDoodyTime (27) from Brooklyn, NY 13 years ago

I can handle pain until it hurts.

[-] -1 points by queenann (-220) from New Rochelle, NY 13 years ago

I live in lower Manhattan and am concerned about the spread of infections coming out of the unsanitary, repulsive conditions @ ZP.

[-] 0 points by TheKing (93) 13 years ago

You should be. When disease strikes the OWSers should go home.

[-] -1 points by MissBirdy (-78) from Thornwood, NY 13 years ago

They show zero concern for the rights of others. They are not pleasant to behold and they stink. The store owners are upset down here. They are vandalizing and hurting the small businesses income. I am nervous about breathing the air down here. Bloomberg needs to man up.

[-] 0 points by TheKing (93) 13 years ago

I agree. Bring out the fire hoses and wash the filth and disease from the park. Bloomy is out of touch with reality.

[-] 0 points by mserfas (652) from Ashland, PA 13 years ago

Ah, American compassion at its finest. Some folks are cold and sick, so break out the fire hoses. Just another day in the Would-Be History of RomneyCare. So much better than guaranteed public health care, isn't it?

[-] 0 points by sppratam (-14) 13 years ago

You're right - they should live in the land of ObamaCare, and die quickly instead.

[-] 0 points by Mooks (1985) 13 years ago

They are cold and sick because they are sleeping in an unsanitary park as winter approaches in NY. Just going home for a week and living like a human would probably treat the majority of the problems.

[-] 0 points by mserfas (652) from Ashland, PA 13 years ago

Do you mean, the middle-class protesters should go home and live like a human before they catch tuberculosis from the homeless people, who should find some other place to skulk off to die?

[-] 1 points by QuietDay (59) 13 years ago

There would be more resources to care for the sick, homeless person if the middle class protester had the common sense and decency to go home if they have one and start taking care of themselves.

It's not neccessary to camp out to protest. I think it's counter-productive actually. How can you forge revolution when you can can barely stand up, let alone think straight?

[-] 0 points by Mooks (1985) 13 years ago

Yes, the middle class people should stay the hell away from a homeless person with TB. That is just common sense. The homeless man with TB should go to a hospital emergency department where they will be bound by law to admit and treat him. They should not be sleeping in a park together.

[Removed]

[-] -1 points by queenann (-220) from New Rochelle, NY 13 years ago

After they get them out they should torch the park. That's the only way to kill the bacteria, vermin (non human) & germs. Human vermin need to be sent home to Mommy or where ever. ... just so long as it's far away.

[-] 0 points by sppratam (-14) 13 years ago

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
