If your slogan is we are the 99 percent, blah, blah, blah. How do you welcome people to speak at your protests, such as Alec Baldwin, Kanye West, Michael Moore and Susan Sarandon? Alec Baldwin just bought a 11.7 million dollar apartment by Washington Square Park. Don't ya think he's the 1 percent. Shouldn't you be protesting people such as him. All he and Michael Moore need to do is a write a big fat check to the federal reserve (or the 99 percent) and problem solved. Funny how that WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Those people will never cut that check because in Capitalistic America they actually earned it. Should they earn that much? IDK. Why are you not protesting Obama, the man you voted into power? Him and Michelle take vacations around the world costing tax payers millions of dollars. Obama put us in a 1.4 trillion dollar deficit. Bush put us in a 800 billion dollar deficit. You certainly protested him. Wake up people!! You think your college loan should be paid for, how about Michael Moore cuts a check to every single person with a loan. You think he can't afford it, he's worth 100 million dollars. Al Gore became our first global warming billionaire as he heats up all his mansions, why isn't he cutting his check to the 99 percent? Please, pick yourself up, do something with your life, leave the park, get a hold of yourself.
Actually, I have a better Idea. How about we have a little thing called accountability in high places. Bankers that sold junk bonds labeled Aaa are guilty of FRAUD, politicians that received bribes from corporations are guilty of GRAFT. And corporations that took bailout monies to pay out multi million bonuses are criminally stupid.
The point isn't that some have, but that some have through ILLEGAL means.
The reason they were able to legally sell junk bonds is because of the federal government removing certain laws that made it possible. Protest the government, not corporations!
The government repealed Glass Steagal on behest of the corporations.
Exactly!!!! It's NOT the corporations duty to act responsibly. It IS the governments duty to act responsibly.
I really wish that both would realize that in the end, they both need to be accountable and responsible to "The people". We obviously have to force this issue since voting doesn't do anything.
Expecting a corporation to be responsible to anything other than turning a profit for their shareholders is not rooted in reality. And voting does do something. Last November will go down in history as the highest # of elected officials being voted out at one time, ever! Google last Novembers elections. Our government has never seen anything like it before. It scared the crap out of them. And we can do it again!
Elections don't scare them at all. They control both major parties, and the teabags are just a subset of repubs.
What a retarded statement. It's EVERYONE'S duty to act responsibly.
Retarded statement? Are you 12 years old? Go back to the playground. Join up with OWS once you learn how to tie your shoes.
But did anything good happen for the people due to these elections..I expect Corporations to turn a profit for shareholders but not at the cost of the rest of society.
no, they sold them as Aaa because ratings agencies labeled them as such, though they were not, at the behest of the banks, it was straight -up fraud, and illeagal as hell
I support the OWS movement.
I am politically conservative, which means that i support a strict construction of the constitution, limited federal government, more local (state) rule, and more power in the hands of the people.
with this -- or as part of this -- i believe that a federal government has a specific purpose, which is to manage the situations that affect everyone in the nation.
I am also a trained lawyer and a small business owner. I vote, i participate in public hearings regarding local to national issues, and i write to my representatives on various topics. I've also participated in various protests for the last 21 years, when I felt that it was appropriate to do so.
The issue here is that you are confusing money with corruption.
I have no problem with making money. In fact, I like capitalism and I'd like to see it continue. But I'd like it to exist without the corruption and the corporation-government connection.
To be sure, this movement is a political movement focused on the government. I know it appears to be focused on the companies, but the reason that the spotlight is on the companies is to point out the corruption.
As has been said many times, and has existed for a long time in this country, there is an intimate relationship between the biggest corporations and government.
Corporations lobbied, donated to campaigns, and often managed to get their own people (eg, their executives) put into key positions in regulating bodies, in order to impact how their industry would be regulated. By stacking the deck of regulation (or lack thereof) in their favor, they create a situation where they can amass power, and continue to directly influence government.
The real issues here is that it is no longer a government of the people. It is a government run by corporations.
And one way to point this out, is to shine a spotlight on those companies and the relationship those companies have with the government.
The various aspects of the OWS movement -- from marches and protests, from occupations and the web presence, and from taking money out of large corporations and putting it into local banks and credit unions, supporting smaller, local business, and community supported agriculture -- are intended to tell these companies that we will not support their unethical practices, and eventually move the government to remove corruption and regulate industry as the people decide it appropriate -- through these public hearings, etc -- rather than based on the income that these companies can provide the politicians.
So, here I am. Yet another educated, thoughtful individual who stands with the Occupy Movement. (and FWIW, I also stood with tea-partiers before they got co-opted).
You are missing the point. There's always going to be a "one percent" those of us among the 99% don't object to their existence. We ARE objecting to the fact that they have taken control of the political process, and are using that control to further impoverish everyone else.
Did you just say that Michael Moore and/or Alec Baldwin could stroke a check t othe Fed Reserve and solve all the issues? Really?
You think they have billions, let alone trillions, just laying around?
we not after obama we after people like you
I do not opppose the right of the 1% to get rich. I oppose the disproprotionate influence the 1% have on our political system. The influence of multinational corporations on our government is not benign. The removal of appropriate regulatory safeguards, at the behest of Wall Street financial institutions, contibuted to the economic meltdown we are all experiencing.
it seems you are living an a world of delusions,. who supports Obama? You also seem to lack any math skills,. you think 100 million will pay for student debt?? do get a grip., the 1 percent are billionaires not millionaires,. and artist and movie actors are not so much the ones perpetuating the systems of institutional theft.
Movie Stars are known to give large amounts to causes that they deem important, they are not buying politicians.
Maybe they should invite Rush, or Sean, or Oreally, The Beckster maybe or Maybe Boehner
I think they may want the same deal that the banks got, you know - 1.2 trillion debt assumed by the government and handed to the taxpayer and no prosecutions for crimes that brought the country's economic system to its knees.
We are protesting the culture of greed and the ignorant lemmings like you that support the despicable gluttony of billionaires.
What do you do for a living?
None of your business, I didn't come here to talk about myself the way you right wingers have to defend your fucking work ethic and how you climbed the fucking ladder, go shuffle peoples' money around you useless turd.
You add NOTHING to society
How would you know? The only thing you know about me is that I disagree with you. I can make some guesses about you--every opinion you have, everything you "believe," relates to your own self-interest. What do you contribute to society, you shuffle numbers on a fucking computer screen? My screen name would be miserablebanker if I were you, you can have your pathetic life. You know nothing about me, fool.
How much are you worth (I imagine you value yourself in dollars, and nothing more)? Therefore, you are worthless beyond the relatively meager salary that you earn.

You missed the point!!!
yes i see-- you aren't creepy.
yes don't make billions but love one another- i like that
Good.

We're not advocating for communism, where no one is supposed to have more than anyone else and the government controls everything. It's about being fiscally accountable! It's about creating a society that values its citizens, not the artificial representation of wealth that passes between us in exchange for goods. E pluribus unum. From many, one! Let's stop playing the blame game, put on our big girl and boy pants, and figure out how to quit making poor choices. Let's oust the incumbents and get government that is accountable and dare I say it? Honest!!!
or we could all go visit osixs.org and use the nuclear option we were given in the declaration of independence by our founding fathers... that'll hold a few people accountable alright...
"Actually, I have a better Idea. How about we have a little thing called accountability in high places. Seems as though a lot of you are very uneducated on the facts. --- Bonds and securities were sold as low risk because the gov't (fannie and freddie) fully-backed them, and explicitly did so WITHOUT any documentation. Meaning that people just lied about their income and were able to get loans they otherwise shouldnt have been able to get.
The gov't said documentation was not needed, if the gov't is backing it then there is basically no reason to do any due diligence...
Many of you also seem to think that the banks just took all this money in bailouts (aka TARP) for free and never gave it back. In REALITY, many banks were forced to take the money and not only did they pay upwards of 9% on the loans but the gov't also got equity ownership in the banks. ALL TARP money has essentially been repaid and the gov't actually made a bunch of money on the deal (interest payments and capital gains).
It may be easier to just blame the banks, which do deserve some, but the real fault lies from main st to wall st.
What about the average person who took a loan and bought a second house they KNEW they should not be able to afford? "no big deal... I'll just refinance with the new teaser rate in 5-years.. it'll be all okay"
your ugly for this post.
OWS needs a clear statement of the problem(s) and the solutions proposed. I believe the main problem is lack of employment. Please see Under-employment at http://www.kwbsolutions.com/TCV/PUE1.htm.
i have a question for you.
why would we as a society create a nation, which has to borrow money from a private bank? money that bank doesn't even have.
we, the nation, allow them(!) to create the very money, on which they can charge US with interests? that gain out of those interests are privatized. it's pure SOCIALISM for the banks.
how does this benefit anyone except the banks?
Educate yourself. Maybe the fucking government and Wall Street are one & the same.
Maybe "The Guys From Government Sachs" are in both DC & on Wall St. just like the occupiers.

Please do something with yourself besides hate on Micheal Moore and Alec Baldwin.
Thank god we have trolls like you to set us straight!

I protest a government that's been bought off by Corporate and Banking Elites and no longer represents "The People". I protest Wall Street for their collusion with government and the fraud that occurred in 2008 where no one was held accountable...SO NO ONE IS GOING HOME AGAIN EVER..
Obama is to blame as much as Bush and Clinton..All puppets..like all our politicians.
As far as what people get paid..I don't think people mind others getting what the 'market will bear" as long as it isn't stealing and that shit that went down on Wall Street in 2008 was stealing and they to this day are still stealing.
Capitalism works great as long as people have morals and some sense of decency...So in other words..It's a failure...as evidenced in our capitalistic banks going socialist and running to the government for money after their bets went bad. Well at least they got their bonuses.
How to remove corporate greed thru social financial shift
Once you have say..50% of the public signed on to the cause you can now organize on a specified date for a execution of the plan. The plan consist of bankrupting a company by pulling stocks, refusal to work, withholding pay from bills and from not buying the chosen companies products. For example let's say a multibillion dollar company all of a sudden looses close to half the workers in it's factory while simultaneously a major sell off of it's stock was occurring at wall street. The stock would plummet and the media would be quick to cover the unfolding developments.then as if the shock of a diminished workforce and a stock freefall wasn't enough the payment of half the goods on the books would remain unpaid along with the half empty stores filled with the talk of a giant who had fallen by the sheer will of the people The doomed company goes bankrupt within a very short amount of time and the workers start up a co-op an Employee owned company under new management with the proceeds and increase profit benefitting those that work there and the distribution of the wealth is filtered thru those of us in the community. We can do this to all the multibillion dollar companies and essentially get the money back. It was our money in the first place and it can be done. The benefits of such a hostile takeover of a major corporation are two fold you redistribute the money to the people and you eliminate a sponsor of political corruption. No corporations translates to no lobbyist and crooked deals behind close doors. Not only do you get the money back but in the end you get a political system that actually works for the people
Out of all the comments, very few actually responded to the points I made. You all have your slogans and stick to it. There is no independent thought. Mob mentality. This reminds me of the documentary I saw on Charles Manson's followers. Sad. Go home to your families before it's too late.

Yeah, that's so cool. Keeps them from doing real police work. Thanks, but hey, I don't live in the city and never will.
I love finding the mindset behind the movement, it's very interesting.
The police presents? lol
Christ, this website is too dumb for me, great post NYCLady.
I'm done with this website, ya'll are too brainwashed by the media to be blaming it on the wrong people, btdubs the message you guys are advocating is the one that republicans had been for years. Smaller government. You guys don't even know what political sides you're taking.
Go away silly little people.
Protest the federal government. They set the rules for the corporations to destroy this country.
Do both!
It does seem disingenuous or outright manipulative for some "1%-ers" to agree with OWS
Very very good points. I wholeheartedly agree with all of them.
True phantom. All the jobs that the illegal immigrants are doing should be done by these protestors sitting in the parks.
We should elect you dictator so you can "facilitate" that right?
You seem to really like telling others what to do and what to think.
Are you sure you value independent thought? You yourself sound like a wanna be cult leader. Jealous, maybe?
Automation brings wonders. A thresher can do the work of a score of serfs. I don't need them anymore. Why share? They did none of the work.
Liberal actors & authors would love a big fat write off, do some research on tax breaks for these "heroes" of yours.
I've been wondering why it's ok for some known millionaires to speak as well, ain't they one percenters? That's funny, in my world a one percenter has an entirely different meaning, but...
wall street paid back all of the money with interest, all banks were forced to take the money from washington. No banks were allowed to refuse so nobody could point fingers, but they paid it back. Let's talk about the pensions people. Over 12 billion dollars in NYC each year and growing. Let's talk about how GM was bailed out. People make lots of money, that's how life works. You want to make more money, get off your lazy ass at the park & go get a job. Problem is college grads don't want to scrub floors, that's beneath them...........
Ahhh...Some banks have paid it back that's true..But lots haven't...In 2008 Wall Street committed fraud, stole money and destroyed our economy..No one went to jail..
L3employee: Who impoverished you? Communist countries have leaders who impoverish them, not free market societies. Get a grip on yourself. Seriously, pull yourself together, get a job, rent an apartment, you can do it. If you need help, there's plenty of welfare available, medicaid (free health insurance).
jgp- You think the people who put on suits and work on wall street everyday make more money than people like Michael Moore and Alec Baldwin? Most Wall Street types who are successful make a few hundred thousand a year. Al Gore made a billion over global warming. Did you know that?
Did Obama commit theft? He spent 1.4 trillion dollars of American money. Why is no one protesting him?
These protest are protesting "him",. how do you not get that,. you really do choose your reality don't you.

I love how every single one of you responded by character assasination, not by debating any of the points I listed. Typical of ignorant people who do not have the knowledge or skills to debate. All you know how to do is insult, occupy and use aggression.
LazyJealousAnarchist: If you despise wealthy, successful people, why do you take their donations? Why do you allow them to speak? At least your screen name shows that you know yourself well, even if you do not understand the world you live in.
Character assassination? You mean how people called you a lazy stupid ignorant hypocrite ... oh, wait, that was what you said about them. And then you go whining about how people are assassinating your character? Aw. What exactly did they say? Did they imply that you were wrong in some way? The horror!
I agree with many of your points but when your post title is "You Are All Stupid Hypocrites" then you really can't expect people to debate you civilly.
I despise evil people who lie and exploit and hoard wealth they don't deserve, and you bend over for them. My screen name is called sarcasm, it was over your head.
LOL~! Unbelievable.
Because your post is full of character assasination, name calling & condescension, you get the same back in return.
If you want intelligent, respectful discussion, that message of yours is not the way to achieve it.
Demonstrator: No one needs to stop you. You will self-destruct. I just read about a woman getting sexually assaulted over the weekend and another who was raped a few weeks ago. In Oakland, a homeless man was beaten unconscious. You are only courageous because the police are there protecting you. That's the beauty of America, we protect everyone. The only thing I want my tax dollars to go towards is police presence protecting me from the likes of you. I think you meant presence, not presents. I hope you never took out a college loan.

One of the best posts I have seen so far NYCLady. In one of Chris Rocks standup's, he made the distinction between a 'wealthy' person and a 'rich' person. In a nutshell, wealthy people sign rich people checks and then rich people go blow it. What I'm getting at here is that I believe Baldwin, West, Moore and Sarandon are all rich people. They are not people of power per se. Now, whoever signs their paychecks is probably a person of power. Just a point I wanted to make.
You are 100% correct in questioning why people are not protesting Obama. It is almost like once the system broke, people just wanted someone to protest against. Corporate America (the job providers of America) were an easy target because of CEO pay (which I agree is a bit excessive).
I believe the truth is in the details however. Does everyone on here really think corporate America got the way they are without 'adjustments' and 'tweaks' coming from lobbyists and getting passed by Congress? So who is to blame?... in my opinion, it is Washington. Well said NYCLady!
