Forum Post: Would This Idea Make Any Difference?

How different do you think this country would be if every month - exactly like we pay our electric bill, rent or mortgage and various other bills - we pay our taxes? Instead of having our employers withhold taxes from our paychecks, we would get our whole paycheck each pay period, deposited into our bank accounts. Then, each month, the government would mail us all an itemized bill with categories such as Defense, Education, Social Security, Health care, Welfare, Subsidies, Veterans benefits, Random-Shit-in-a-State-You-Dont-Live-In, etc., etc., and we wrote a check based on our tax bracket and mailed it back.

I think this would have an immediate and profound effect on 1) people's willingness to educate themselves on the issues of the day, 2) people's attitudes toward the level of taxation in the country, and 3) people's willingness to hold their elected officials accountable for allocating tax dollars.

Without looking at your pay stub, do you know how much you pay in taxes?

Just curious to see how people think this would changes things, if at all. And if people think this is a good idea.

Thanks for your time!

Do you know off the top of your head how much you pay? I agree with you. Trying to get a sense for whether or not people know what they pay, or if they just go around assuming its a lower number than it really is.

I think we should get the line item reports on what our tax dollars are spent on.

Do you happen to know off the top of your head how much you spend in taxes each year (I don't want to know the $ figure, just curious if you are aware of that number). I have no idea until tax-time each year and I'm shocked by it.

Yes I do and each year that it rises I get more disgusted with it. They think we can just put away more in our 401K's ore retirement accounts to offset the additional amounts they want from us, but the extra you would have to put in the retirement accounts is so disporportionate to the increase in what they take from you, you can't do it.
