No wonder the NYPD aren't evicting OWS—like the Soviets during World War II, they know the winter will do it for them.
What plans are being made to move the occupation indoors?
There are lots of vacant storefronts that could be occupied. Of course, using private property without permission escalates conflict with the police. And indoor space is inherently less public and noticeable. Still, the weather factor must be dealt with sooner rather than later, not only by OWS but by all Occupations in the northern United States.
Surely people are discussing this. What ideas do people have for taking it indoors?
Going to have to maintain a presence. I would recommend Gortex, and -20+ degree rated sleeping bags. Down jackets. etc. etc.
OWS has raised OVER $300,000. Why don't they use some of that money to rent places for the protestors to stay during the winter? And more importantly, why does nobody know where the money is going? Demand financial transparency from OWS! http://occupywallst.org/forum/why-is-there-not-a-transparent-finance-section-on-/

If you are really committed to the movement you will stay in 15 degree weather and 1 or 2 feet of snow.
New York had a lot of snow last year. Several times it exceeded two feet.
Um, some of us have asthma and stuff. Seriously, you expect 75-year-old Occupiers to live out in the snow? Really?
OWS and other cold weather cities should use their donated funds to move the protest south for the winter. Migrate using charter buses, perhaps?
The obvious solution is to move into abandoned stores and other indoor spaces made available by the collapse of global gangster capitalism.
I'd imagine that taking over abandoned stores is illegal unless given permission.
Charter buses are going to put out too much CO2 into the atmosphere. How about ox wagons (with the consent of the oxen of course)?
The protests are just getting started in SF and the bay area. It does not get cold here in the winter, so perhaps people would come here. Summer of love.. Winter of occupation?
What makes the Occupy movement viable is its local nature. People close to home can still keep track of their lives and families.
Regardless, the west coast is an option for some "hard core" protesters. Maybe in NYC and the rest of the country, they can have daily/weekly protests when it gets too cold out?
The movement will begin to die if that happens. The continuous nature of the movement is what makes it, like Tahrir Square was, a movement.
What makes the Occupy movement viable is that it speaks for our whole country. Keeping up with our families is easily accomplished with the net, cell phones, and land lines.
What about people with kids in school? Packing up and migrating south is more feasible for birds than people.
The whole world can still watch, and support the movement this way. I doubt there are many elderly folks or families with school age children sleeping overnight in the park right now, unless they're starving and/or homeless. Food and shelter are higher priorities than school. They'll go, too.
We need a full on "hooverville" In DC stay for five years if need be...Just like the vets in the thirties!
I doubt the US government will last that long, with or without a revolution. Collapse is imminent.
Hate to say it but you are probably right.
The smell outside is almost unbearable. Inside it would be pour hell.
Wheres your sense of commitment? The world will really pay attention when a few occupiers freeze to death. Good times.
