... during my lunch hour. warehouse jobs for one of my businesses, you'll be operating pallet jacks and forklifts all day, loading and unloading tractor trailers. both part time with possible full time and full benefits later. $13.55/hour. no criminal records. no car required, warehouse is three blocks from a bus route.

will be interesting to see how this pans out. have told some of my friends here at the day job what i plan on doing and they think i'm nuts.

some background - have had difficulty filling these positions, we've only filled two of four total vacancies, as this is a new distribution center for us. most applicants so far have fallen into three general catagories

  1. hispanics with immigration question marks that prevent us from hiring them. many local municipalities have tried to do the job of the federal government in recent years in rooting out and reporting illegal immigrants, resulting in many hispanics, legal and illegal, moving out of the area, unfortunately.
  2. young men who feel the pay is too low. i disagree, wages are competitive for the job. if they do a good job and are hired full time, it comes to over $30k/yr and they get full benefits.
  3. men with criminal backgrounds

Where is this "generic" occupy?

Will some level of forklift training be offered?

dallas. of course there will be job training, particularly safety training. a dangerous job, this is.

should i just go up and talk to people as i run into them? or should i just make a sign out of posterboard and stand on a streetcorner, hoping someone will approach me?

this is 100% legit and I'm doing this in three hours. no bullshit.

I hope you don't use the results of your experiment to denigrate the movement. People are people. Some of the people at these protests are college kids, and their time at these events is time away from their homework - you could think of it as a sacrifice, or not.

Not all of them will be in a position to use the opportunity to reach out to you, by accepting your offer, but you might get lucky.

You might also actually find someone who really wants a job. You just might.

I hope your experiment works well for both of us.

For all of us.

Well, that's nice, but the people at OWS are trying to make a statement against government and corporate corruption--they're not there because they're waiting for the next job offer to come their way. But hey, go for it!

Disagree. The root cause of the protest is persistent, elevated unemployment. Corporate corruption and political impotence has been problematic for decades, yet ppl didn't protest.

That's because most people are TV- and sugar-addled sheep. And for what it's worth, I have a good job and TWO mortgages, and I'm down at OWS all the time. That's because working hard DOESN'T change the fact that the system is rotten to the core, and that the sinners MUST BE PUNISHED....

Great Idea.

I'm guessing having the "99%"ask for a handout is easier.
