They want more debt owed to other countries? (historically the GOP has increased debt)

Well, maybe that, and also because they always need an enemy. Their strategy is to finger-point and laugh, and the protestors, the effective "face" of the movement, are an easy target. I hope this strategy backfires.

[-] 1 points by OldmanBill (3) 13 years ago

Historically the vast majority of both Democrat and Republican controlled Congresses have increased the debt. In my opinion, with few exceptions, all politicians are scum. They are in Congress to, for the most part, increase their own power and bankrolls. The list of politicians who have not become much wealthier while serving (not) is a small one indeed. If not for the power and money most politicians would not run for office.

[-] 2 points by thebeastchasingitstail (1912) 13 years ago

Yes, it is because they are scared.

One thing I think they are scared of is that what we talk about might awaken some of the brainwashed working class people in their voting base and that would turn those people against their puppet masters.

They can't allow that to happen.

they are angry in general

[-] 1 points by oceanweed (521) 13 years ago

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: One of the main pillars of Conservative propaganda is that both parties are the same. Nothing they say is further from the truth. It is an insidious lie intended to demoralize progressives, and discourage them from voting. Do not fall for this canard, because if both parties are the same, there is no hope for change, and therefore no reason to vote. The truth is that there is a difference between the parties. A stark difference! One party works for the rich, the other party works for all Americans. One party takes money from the needy to feed the greedy, and the other party takes money from the greedy to feed the needy. One party has plans and policies to create jobs, and the other party has a long list of lame excuses for not doing anything. Liberals want to change things. Conservatives want things to stay the same. There is a difference. One party wants to tax the rich, and the other party wants to tax the poor. One party wants to destroy Unions, and the other party wants to support them. One party supports the Occupation of Wall Street, and the other party doesn’t. One party wants to rebuild America, and the other party doesn’t. One party wants to provide health care for all, and the other party doesn’t. One party wants to regulate Wall Street, and the other party doesn’t. One Party wants to end the wars; the other party wants them to go on forever. There is a difference. One party is Myopic, and the other party is Far Sighted. One party wants to help the Middle Class, and the other party is at war with the Middle Class. One party wants to fire Teachers, and the other party wants to hire them. One party wants to create more jobs in America, and the other party wants to create more jobs in Asia. There is a difference. One party wants to protect pensions, and the other party wants to loot them. One party has a heart, and the other party has Ann Coulter. One party protects the right bear Arms, and the other party protects the right of freedom of assembly. One party believes that the only role for the Government is to provide for the common defense, and the other party believes that the Government should also promote the general Welfare. There is a difference, and anybody that tells you there is no difference between the parties is simply not conversant with reality. In addition, anyone that blames the Democrats for the current state of affairs has no understanding of who controls the Government. One Party has the Presidency, and the other party has the Majority in the House, controls the Senate, has a majority on the Supreme Court, and is responsible for current economic policy. So, if you’re angry, and you want to start a real fight, I submit that we should start a real fight with the Conservatives! America has a Two Party System. One party is clearly on your side, the other party thinks you’re and Anti-American mob. At some point in time you’re going to have to pick one. Choose wisely, your future is at stake

[-] 2 points by jeepman133 (14) 13 years ago

The only difference between the parties is there own agendas. the majority of both parties voted for war, opened the door for the banks to make loans, they knew would never be repaid, then turned around and bailed them out.robbed the social security fund, voted for job gutting trade agreements. both parties refuse to vote for any type of meaningful campaign reform.there all controlled by big business and there employees who lobby our politicians. power and greed determine how both parties vote.

I feel this has turned into watching a tennis game

[-] 1 points by HarryCrew07 (433) 13 years ago

I don't want to be rude, but dichotomizing these two parties in this way will only divide us more. At the present moment in history, we need to work together and find common ground. Most Republicans are part of the 99% too.

[-] 0 points by oceanweed (521) 13 years ago

From the Republican Creed: "We believe: That all individuals are entitled to equal rights, justice, and opportunities and should assume their responsibilities as citizens in a free society,

That the Federal Government must preserve individual liberty by observing Constitutional limitations,

That peace is best preserved through a strong national defense,"

I'm pretty sure there's something in there the OWS and Republicans can agree on. Now, the problem is that most Republicans can't even agree to abide by these principles - and therein lies the problem... BUT bashing Republicans in general is counterproductive as I have told you time and again oceanweed... Now, here comes the response -- wait for it....

"stop the fox spin"

[-] 2 points by gtyper (477) from San Antonio, TX 13 years ago

Indy,

Thank you for helping to restore my faith in this movement. Too many people like OceanWeed have been co-opting this movement and creating division rather than unity.

We can all agree the government is broken and our political system has become pay-for-play. Almost all people in America feel this way - republican, middle ground, democrat ... it doesn't matter.

Quit being divisive OceanWeed. It does nothing but push people away.

[-] 1 points by oceanweed (521) 13 years ago

ows is a protest not a compromise with republicans on views that your leaders wont support

[-] 1 points by gtyper (477) from San Antonio, TX 13 years ago

You miss the point, OceanWeed. It isn't about compromising with anyone. The leaders of both political parties are going to resist the change that we require and we will need to force it through with a little arm twisting.

Also, please don't be so presumptuous as to my political leanings. You don't know me from a hill of beans.

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 13 years ago

"That all individuals are entitled to equal rights, justice, and opportunities and should assume their responsibilities as citizens in a free society,"

would that be a willingness to stand by there vote with their names?

[-] 0 points by oceanweed (521) 13 years ago

you almost got it but let me help the republican leaders are the problem and the republicans who vote them into office how can anybody take your party serious when they have herman cain leading a tea party favorite

[-] 1 points by Indy4Change (254) from Columbia, SC 13 years ago

Like I said before though - bashing the Republicans with such broad generalizations is counterproductive. I recognize there is a problem in the Republican party - there absolutely is. It is almost as dysfunctional and misguided as OWS appears to be sometimes. Your divisiveness serves no purpose though oceanweed. It is a turn-off that pushes people away rather than draws them to you. We get it - you hate Republicans - the part you keep failing to recognize over and over again is that this movement is supposed to be bi-partisan (according to those who started it) - so focusing on Republican hate doesn't advance the OWS movement when there truly are reasons that Dems and Pubs alike can and should be able to come together.

[-] 1 points by oceanweed (521) 13 years ago

ows is a protest not a compromise with republican views that there leaders wont support

[-] 1 points by HarryCrew07 (433) 13 years ago

Well, in that case, the OWS better stop calling themselves the 99%. Because they are more like the 50% right now. And as far as that is concerned, they are going to get smaller. If they can't find a way to incorporate everyone, there is no way to succeed. They will simply recreate the system which already exists. Dichotomies lead to dichotomies... I believe the OWS should support Fiscal Conservatism. I support certain Republican Views, though I am an extreme non-violent radical.

[-] 1 points by oceanweed (521) 13 years ago

its not ows fault its people like you who took the term 99% out of context from the start ows meant we are the rest of america the middle class not the tea party so called average american

[-] 1 points by BrainC (400) from Austin, TX 13 years ago

individual freedom. Do you agree with the governments attempt to control individual freedoms through taxes? For example, the increase in fast food tax. How is this a tax on the rich? It is a tax on the middle class and below in an attempt to CONTROL the individual's choice.

[-] 0 points by oceanweed (521) 13 years ago

thats your problem you dont understand politics because if you did you wouldnt blame both sides example herman cain 999 or 666 to ows

[-] 2 points by BrainC (400) from Austin, TX 13 years ago

you have been brainwashed by the Democrats. You, sadly, are one of those individuals that believe that Republican politicians are actually doing things that they believe to be harmful, while you believe that a Democrat politician is acting out of nobility.

I actually believe that BOTH are trying to do the right thing, as they see it, yet they are also trying to maintain their political power.

[-] 1 points by MJMorrow (419) 13 years ago

How will OWS help the middle class? Protest is a syymptom, but what is the solution? If you could talk to a former CEO and deliver a plan to create high paying careers, for the middle class, what might that plan be?

[-] 1 points by Rico (3027) 13 years ago

[-] 1 points by Tess (12) 13 years ago

I guess you haven't heard. Eric Canter leader in the House of Representatives, who called the OWS a week ago a "mob", now wants to be our new best friend. He was on tv tonight saying he understands the disparity in income. He thinks we shouldn't bring the wealthy down, we should bring the rest up. He said businesses should hire. This has got to be a bad dream. Eric Canter a far right republican, who supports big business, just doesn't wake up one morning and change his ideology. He is one of the primary reasons nothing will get passed for jobs in the House. He will be speaking in Philly. What a joke. The only good thing is OWS got his attention and he isn't calling us names any more.

If you study what Ronald Reagan's Budget Director, David Stockman, says about the agenda of the Republicans you will see why the Republicans are scared. The agenda of "trickle down" economics was to remove tax revenue from the Federal Govenment, while racking up significant government debt so that at some point they could blame unsustainable debt on the Democrats and convince the public that it will be in their best interest to reduce the size of government and government programs. It worked masterfully and they are about to get what they wanted all along, austerity supported by the people.

[-] 1 points by oceanweed (521) 13 years ago

Have you studied the warren buffet rule,

[-] 1 points by insidervoice (21) 13 years ago

I am very in favor of a "Buffett Rule" tax. I would advocate a 30% flat tax for all income, no matter the source, over a $1MM. This would increase taxes on dividend, muni bond interest and capital gain income over $1MM and it would actually decrease the tax rate on ordinary income over $1MM.

One party is clearly on your side, the other party thinks you’re and Anti-American mob. At some point in time you’re going to have to pick one. Choose wisely, your future is at stake

They cant

Choose wisely, your future is at stake

ows will never support republican views

[-] 1 points by ohgazzoo (4) 13 years ago

Funny I am a Republican and I so far support Ron Paul, a True constitutionalists. I believe he is a follow the rule guy. If the rules are wrong then they need to be righted. Regardless of weather he supports them or not he will see to it that they are followed. He is also the only one I trust. His views and consistency is better then having to deal with a manipulator or lair. This is only my personal opinion based on my beliefs. Furthermore I do support the movement as described by its true meaning. That everyone's opinion counts and that each vote is equal. I, however will not accept this movement to take a political side. There is only one side on a circle So for the sake of the people everyone needs to stop figuring out and fighting about who broke it and start focusing on how to fix it as a bipartisan group. sometimes in order to move forward you have to reset to a previous setting. This Is America. The country that is my priority. It is hard to help others when your struggling on your own. Fix it here now and it will resonate through out the world. Again!

The Republicans are attacking OWS for one reason. OWS is an obstacle that could potentially hinder the final takeover of the US Government by corporate, religious, and military interests favored by the Republicans.

My opinion pre-supposes that there is a difference between Republican and Democrats. Sure they exhibit some of the same characteristics that I dislike but I won't blind myself to the stark contrast between the two on specific policy issues. In the comparision, the Democrats are clearly more favorable to people who seek protection from the kind of aggression that moneyed interests have perpetrated against the disadavantaged throughout history.

The Republicans are keenly aware that elections can be determined by the level of motivation among the voters. They did all they could to ensure that the Democratic faithful would become too disillusioned to vote in 2012. The Republicans know that they have no common ground with the majority of OWS protesters. Now they sow confusion and dissent everywhere with their usual tricks.

Occupy the docks. Support a long shoremans family walkout. Stop buying from national bank owned home builders. They are your worst, unhealthy invesment since the white collar took over the housing business. We are losing artists and innovators due to greed. Companies such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart compete with U.S manufacturers saving you nothing, bringing in junk toxic product. The list is endless. America is in disrepair. Bring our kids home from Afghanistan to rebuild. Let the British fight for that land. Tell them we are done fighting for them. Spend billions here, not there. Creating jobs is simple. Look around you. This country needs, needs, needs. Bad leaders with no acountability that's our problem. We, the people, need to OCCUPY every sector.

They are afraid that OWS will help the democrats win. Which is what it might end up doing at the rate it is getting "co opted" by various organizations.

The group that organized this..Adbusters is from Canada. They are openly anti-capitalists. They started OWS.

However I see that the movement has attracted more then the anti-capitalists crowd. I'm not sure they counted on that. Now the people are taking notice of the movement. I am not surprised to see other political types try and step in. When they unleash the “real” agenda, I think most PEOPLE involved in this movement will recognize that. I have witnessed the awakening of many people, who came here for information.

How many times are you going to parrot the same "ows will never support a republican view if so name one". It's foolish and divisive.

To view the black & white generalizations of republicans, most of which are centrists (much like democrats), is just incorrect.

Republican Party had its hand in major issues from abolition of slavery to the support of women's suffrage. Don't assume that the talking heads of today represent all but a vocal fraction of the republican base.

[-] 1 points by BrainC (400) from Austin, TX 13 years ago

Do you differentiate between individuals that are Republicans and Republican politicians?

Republican politicians are just as bad as Democrat politicians. They are mainly concerned with one thing, control of power. Republicans cater to the rich to get financial support, Democrat's cater to the poor to get votes. Both are doing it to be able to maintain their political power.

So, I think that the individual Republican agrees with some of what the OWS is saying. It is actually really hard to agree with the OWS on ANYTHING, because if you agree with what one person says the OWS stands for, another person comes along and says the OWS stands for the complete opposite.

[-] 1 points by an0n (764) 13 years ago

I down-voted this because I believe it's a good policy to call people what they want to be called, not what Fox News wants you to call them. I try not to use "Teabagger" or "Repugnican" and also refrain from using "Democrat." "Democrat" is a noun, but as an adjective, the term "Democratic" should be used. You may or may not agree that Democrats are democratic; Democratic individuals may also question whether Republicans are republican, but they don't call you "Republics." Just FYI.

[-] 1 points by TechJunkie (3029) from Miami Beach, FL 13 years ago

I'm a Republican individual and that pretty much sums it up, yes.

[-] 1 points by groobiecat2 (746) from Brattleboro, VT 13 years ago

I think I see what you're saying, and it's a legitimate question. Not all republicans are for everything republican candidates stand for, just as not all democrats are for everything democrats stand for. Similarly, there are divisions within #OWS about what it ultimately stands for--once you go below 5,000 feet. The one thing I think is pretty great about the movement is that it is diverse--and offers the one opportunity in a very long time to bridge the "left/right" dichotomy.

The challenge is to remove people from party. The dialogue--and open discourse and outlining of the differences--must be engaged. The current system makes that impossible, apparently. Both sides are reviled by the other in a never ending battle, like two scorpions in a jar.

Ultimately, to get past the "left/right," paradigm, a new set of base definitions needs to be embraced. A common language the people can easily understand and that doesn't demonize. So, for example, prioritization and allocating of resources. What's the about? Well, in Finland, they decided to eliminate homelessness, and they remain a very successful country economically. Do I want to move to Finland? Well, not yet. But could the US take a page from their book? Why not?

Ultimately, I think that's where the #OWS needs to go: an agree-upon set of goals and a dialogue that people can use to discuss and debate those goals and how to reach them.

[-] 1 points by BrainC (400) from Austin, TX 13 years ago

Yes, I agree. It would be better to remove the right/left wing rhetoric and move to common ground. But, as you can read below, some want it to be one sided, specifically, anti-republican. Then oceanweed has the audacity to ask why Republicans are attacking the OWS?

[-] 1 points by groobiecat2 (746) from Brattleboro, VT 13 years ago

Well, everyone's on edge and concerned about having the movement be co-opted by one group or another. Also, in Oceanweed's defense, this board has been inundated with extremist lurkers and trolls and haters who want nothing more than to sew dissension and undermine the movement. That has been less than fun. It's not really a good medium for civil discourse, to be honest. And it is, obviously, in complete disarray (no structure, no moderators, nothing sorted by topic--just a mash up free for all).

[-] 1 points by Flsupport (578) 13 years ago

And those people who come in trolling have a decidedly right wing, pro corporate, anti-environmental, anti-Obama slant. I am only saying by looking at the evidence it is clear who is attacking the movement more and where they sit.....which side of the fence they are on. As much as everyone wants to be inclusive it is important to understand who is out to destroy the movement.

[-] 1 points by groobiecat2 (746) from Brattleboro, VT 13 years ago

Agreed. And frankly, the one thing that people don't seem to want to deal with is the fact that the two movements really are polar opposites. Is it really important to "work with the Tea Party" when they are clearly (in general, not all, perhaps) the extreme right arm of the republican party?

I mean, this really couldn't be any clearer. We want the #OWS to work with people who don't share its philosophy, but we want to eschew the very party that the #OWS draws it members from.

Yeah, I'm really struggling with this. Matt Taibbi wrote about this today and it seemed like he had no idea what the Tea Party was only that "it makes sense for the two to join forces" or some other nonsense. I'm a fan, but just because "both share a few commonalities," um, yeah. No.

It's about priorities--OWS is anti-neoliberalism and the laissez faireans, are, well, the embodiment of neoliberalism. Check the OWS post on Oct. 15 to see what I mean.

Cheers....

[-] 1 points by cmt (1195) from Tolland, CT 13 years ago

There may be commonalities that can be worked with. A frivolous example: I have a friend who is far right, but we work together for the welfare of dogs.

There may be specific issues we can agree on and work together on, as long as we respect our disagreements.

[-] 1 points by groobiecat2 (746) from Brattleboro, VT 13 years ago

Agreed. Small issues may be the answer. But the fact of the matter is, it's going to be very difficult to figure out how to get past the big ticket issues. These are very very different movements with very very different philosophical underpinnings.

One thing that people haven't addressed--and that Barney Frank spoke about on Rachel Maddow last night--is that it's great that the Occupy Wall Street movement is happening, but how will it use its power. The Tea Party translated its movement into votes for members of congress--that's how they took over the House of Representatives and brought the economy and the president to their knees.

How will #OWS translate this groundswell of support into actual policy influence?

Not there yet, but it's the 800 lb. gorilla in the room...

[-] 1 points by cmt (1195) from Tolland, CT 13 years ago

We may need to built personal relationships with people in those different movements, and then use that to find the areas where we can work together. I'm not at the OWS events, but they may serve this purpose to some extent.

Or is it because they want to think they can support the OWS but are put off by "representation" within and around the OWS movement (like moveOn.org, the President, Unions, etc) and comments like this post that only serve to attack them and not persuade them? What started out as a bipartisan movement that should have very easily have been able to gain support from all Americans is quickly turning into a polarizing movement that appears to be an Obama campaign re-election tool. This thread is a prime example of the fracture that this movement is embracing.

ows will never support a republican view if so name one

[-] 1 points by HarryCrew07 (433) 13 years ago

Most Republicans truly think that their viewpoints would help the most Americans. They truly believe that deregulation and trickle down will work. The funny thing is, we have never actually tried De-regulation, so there is no way to know if it would work. The "market" has been regulated since its current conception in Industrialized England. However, I do believe that the majority of average Republicans have the same goals as the Democrats. They do want people to work, but they want people who work to be compensated. They want people to have homes and for people to be healthy. They disagree with the WAY these things come about.

Specifically with the OWS movement, they are mainly scared about a return to concepts like national socialism and communism. We have to remember that the older generation lived through WWII, its aftermath, and the Cold War. There are serious fears out there of other types of government and economic organization. We must continue to work with the Republicans who are attacking the movement if we truly wish to succeed!! Their goals and ours are not entirely different. We just need to find a way to speak together on WAYS in which these goals can be realized

[-] 1 points by oceanweed (521) 13 years ago

Republicans are determined to convince people there's an UNLIMITED amount of wealth to be had, apparently from money trees they've hidden in an undisclosed location. That simply isn't true.

[-] 1 points by HarryCrew07 (433) 13 years ago

I agree that their economics is not based on sound mathematics. But I would agree that ALL economics is based on unsound mathematics. This type of thinking is not singular to Republicans though.

[-] 1 points by stray (219) from Philadelphia, PA 13 years ago

I'm not talking about unsound math, I'm talking about the fairy tale they have concocted to keep the hamsters on the wheels. If all the country's wealth is in the hands of the top 1% that means less for the rest of us. Entrepreneurs, small business, the common working man, and so on. Its the economic equivalent of having an NFL team play a High School football team for the hell of it.
