This article was emailed by an investment manager who works with very wealthy clients to a professor at Stanford University (Prof. G. William Domhoff). It does a great job of illustrating who the wealthiest 1% are.
The bottom half of the top 1% are doctors, lawyers, and sucessful businessmen who worked hard, saved, and invested well. The top half of the top 1% are the financiers and other individuals who profited directly from capital markets.
One of the most illustrative quotes shows what we in the bottom 99.5% all have in common: we're all being exploited by the multi-millionaires and capital owners of this country.
"Most of those in the bottom half of the top 1% lack power and global flexibility and are essentially well-compensated workhorses for the top 0.5%, just like the bottom 99%"
It's short and totally worth the read: http://sociology.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/power/investment_manager.html
The evil 1% is anyone who makes more money than me.
1% buys their representation in government (corporations and individuals). 99% are left with the scraps.
Hardly the Representative Democracy that our Founding Fathers had in mind. Is it any wonder our country is in a terrible mess?
Guy with wrench: "It wasn't me, officer, I'm just a guy with a wrench."
Officer: "Fine. And you?"
Guy with blowtorch: "It wasn't me, officer, I'm just a guy with a blowtorch."
Officer: sigh "Fine, and how about you?"
Guy with stethoscope: "No way, officer, I just have a stethoscope." dangles his stethoscope from one finger
Officer: turns around to the man behind him "It must be you, then, pal - there's nobody left but you!"
Banker: "Well, fuck me."
