I think one of the many problems with American politics is that it is not nearly partisan enough. On basic questions (i.e. their basic support of the system) there is really no difference at all between the Republicans and the Democrats. They fight like crazy to give the 99% that there is really some kind of democracy in the US while there is really virtually no democracy at all in the electoral process. What democracy exists is essentially based on what little freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion and due process that we have.
