Forum Post: When Being arrested.

I am noticing in many of the videos on here that when people are being arrested that there appears to be some struggle, and then when the person is handcuffed they stand and are walked off by the police. I am just wondering if there is any reason we have not taken a page from the civil rights moment on the procedure for being arrested?

Dr King himself would advocate passive resistance, by this what is meant sit down or lay down, and don't move. Make the police do all the work. Don't resist or help the arrest in any way. Become dead weight. They my have an easier time putting the hand cuffs on you, but will then be stuck in a position where they will have to get 2 to 4 officers to pick you up and carry you.

This make it much more difficult to arrest multiple people as they have to invest more man people in each arrest, it also from what little bit i understand takes a lot of the steam out of the court process when they try to accuse you of resisting.

Any thoughts about this from other people? Can we spread the word and start using this again?

The police are part of the 99%. Their pensions are at risk. Their healthcare premiums going up with the rest of us. Their education debt and that of their children are just like everyone else's.

DO NOT TURN THEM INTO ENEMIES. We need them.

Why are people getting arrested?!? Act like adults. Be respectful. Utilize peaceful civil disobedience if you must, otherwise... TAKE THE HIGH ROAD.

The suggestions are good ones and does not disenfranchise the police. It is simply what to do when arrested...and it helps in preventing over aggressive action from the police. I used it in the 60s as did many of my friends..it works well.

Most of the videos i am seeing of people being arrested did nothing wrong. They were maybe the loudest guy chanting so that's why the police targeted them. I have only seen a couple videos where the person tried to stay standing while the police were throwing them to the ground. This is not a matter of be respectful and civil and they will leave you alone. If you are stepping up to the plate as a protester and calling out the chats for others to protest your a target...if your louder than those around you your a target...in fact if your there at all your a target.

Do not mistake the fact that we are fighting for the police as a sign that they are on our side. They may benefit from this eventually, and some of them may even sympathize with you. Do not forget though they are getting orders from people who are not trying to keep the protest civil they want it gone. If that means placing people in the ground with you to start the violence in the hope it will spread they will. Remember Kent state was not so long ago and it is not hard at all to imagine the police being given the order to open fire on protesters. Don't give them excuse or the will power to do it.

Amanoftheland has a great suggetion so does MeAnWeThePeople. My suggestion isn't about turning them against us it is about making it so damn hard to be against us they have to join us. It is about making them so damn tired that if they get the order to open fire they are too tired to do so.

I'm good with that suggestion. It's peaceful protest. From my perspective, I think we should stress that. People shouldn't shout the cops down. No insults. Quietly staring them down is very powerful after loud chanting is more disquieting than quiet if you catch my meaning.

take some 6 inch PVC pipe, cut them into 2.5 to 3 ft sections (because of different arm lengths) use the sections to shield the hands of 2 DIFFERENT people then line 4 or 5 people up run a length of chain through the pipes lock or fasten the chain with a nut and bolt and then be dead weight!

Hand cuff yourself to another protestor or sign post and then they will have to call in the fire brigade to hack you off with some fancy cutting machine( jaws of life )

Or how about not get arrested. Go home OWS people. Grow up. Act like adults.

[-] 1 points by LazerusShade (76) 13 years ago

yes because ignoring the situation always makes it better? If you not interested in making things better at least don't try and stand in the way of those who do.

[-] 1 points by teddyr (159) from Bronx, NY 13 years ago

I am trying to make things better. My advice is quite sound.

No what your telling them is stop trying to make change go home, and ignore this like everyone else so the bankers can go back to abusing us from a dark corner. That wont make things better it will just allow things to continue as they are with increasing unemployment, and decreasing quality jobs. So let me make my statement clearer.

If you are not here to support the people shut your mouth and leave.

I have seen your posts repeatedly and you have done nothing but tell people to go home and grow up. If this is your stance, why are you on here? Furthermore, don't YOU need to grow up and move along? Surely you have a job to go to, or kittens to mutilate?

[-] 1 points by teddyr (159) from Bronx, NY 13 years ago

I am at work fool. These people do need to grow up. I am here to let them know that.

So wanting better pay, less government waste, less debt in America = people aren't grown up? Seems to me, you are the one that needs to grow up.

I did vote in fact a lot of people voted...guess what they came back saying the electoral college didn't agree, and so the guy we didn't vote for won....twice. Mass Media joined in and played down the fact that bush didn't win the popular vote to the point that most people didn't even notice the first time.

As for the rest of your comment guess what i have a job in fact a very good job. Unlike you though I am not a selfish prick who feels the need to come poke fun just for the sake of being an ass hole. There is a way to run this country that doesn't place all the money and the power in the hands of a few people.

As far as I am concerned you fit into 1 of a few categories.

1.) your one of the rich assholes who profit from the national deficit, and regardless of how badly it is fucking over this country you will do anything to stop the regulations from being put in place that will allow the deficit to be lowered.

2.) one of the rich assholes has promised if you sell everyone else out you will become one of the rich assholes too.

Well here is some news for you. If your in the first group your number is up we are not stopping. If your in the second group well your number is still up, but you will be recognized by all the other people out there who just like you have jobs go vote and work there ass off to get by. In fact the biggest difference between you and us is we care about each other. Who will care about you when the dust settles? Cause i don't think even a mother would love a someone who is so selfish and greedy that they would sell her off for a buck.

Yeah... just remember you might get hungry one day.. then this rich guy look pretty good...

[-] 1 points by rayl (1007) 13 years ago
