Hey, I'll be coming to NYC next week to join the movement. My question is, what kinds of things should I bring? What I've got planned so far is: Canned foods+Can opener, water, changes of clothes and socks, a heavy jacket, an umbrella, and a blanket. I'm gonna try to fit it into a backpack. Are tents aloud? What kinds of things should I NOT bring? Thanks
Bring a positive mental attitude and the comfort you can bail when you feel you need to. Bring nothing you can’t have thrown out. Bring synthetic clothing and sleeping gear. Your going to get rained on. You want something that will dry out fast.
There is a kitchen so if you have limited space don’t bother with a can opener etc.
Better a rain coat and rain hat than an umbrella. Better to bring directions to the Salvation army and some cash instead of a lot of nice cloths. Mass transit rules! If you are going for a specific amount of time plan a reward, see a play, a sight or whatever. Do something for yourself or the occupation is in vain.
Bring courage, resiliance and a piece of your mind! On a sign, of course. :) thank you for coming.
Thanks for this post, I've been wondering the same myself. Could we get a little more detail on food? If we brought canned food or noodles/rice, would there be a place to heat it up? Can we get by on just what the protest is providing? Also, any tips on parking and/or taking a train in? I'm very low on money and traveling with two friends who have nothing.
I'm not even gonna bother heating up my canned food. Stuff like speghetti-os and stuff like that taste fine unheated. But yeah, I heard people are opening up their kitchens to the protesters. You should definitely take a train in, parking rates in NYC are terrible from what I remember.
Wear business casual clothing. Looking like a hippie won't help our image. If we put forth an appearance that we are the workers and we are being scammed, it will look better for us in the media than if we look like lazy druggies on welfare trying to take money from companies. Wear button downs and khakis.
Good point, I didn't even think of that. The good will store down the street from me has a lot of stuff like that for dirt cheap!
happy to help. pass the word around!
I've also found that the little disposable toothbrushes called wisps are a godsend. And listerine strips. Both small, neither need water, and they'll keep you from bein' too funky.
I forgot all about the little wisps. I'll definitely pick'em up. Thanks!
Bring books, like Adam Smith's 'The Wealth of Nations', and Karl Marx's 'Das Kapitel'. Finish reading them before beginning to protest. It won't hurt to bring a copy of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence - they're much shorter and easier to read.
I've been reading Spiritual Technologies of Ancient Egypt by Edward Malkowski, it's a pretty good book. It's about consciousness and the mystery that surrounds it, stuff like that. But I'll have to pick up a political book or 2 so I can get a better understanding of what's going on.
Thanks for the responses guys! I'll probably bring a tarp, and I'll bring some trashbags for makeshift raincoats. I'll try to find a sleeping bag as well. How far is Times Square away from Wall St? I'll probably head there the night I leave and just sit on a bench and watch everything. I went there a few years back with some friends... That place, while it's dark, is quite a sight.
you can get to times squre via the subway in about 15 minutes $2.50
Thanks, that sounds great
Bring your voice, and a friend.
Leave the weapons at home.
A tarp and a can of waterproof spray. It may rain.
