Occupy, Nation of Islam hold joint rally
(WND) - The Occupy movement’s Boston chapter recently held a protest event in conjunction with the Nation of Islam to oppose what they called the “racist” closing of a local post office.

True to form, the article uses the opportunity to try and connect President Obama with the Nation of Islam.
I'm not sure if this story is true or not (and if it is ... I'm not sure why an occupy group would associate itself with the Nation of Islam), but of course the occupy movement is not a monolithic organization (which should be obvious enough). If for whatever reason someone in Boston thought it was a good idea to team up with an extremist, misogynistic, and racist organization, I might think they have shit for brains, but I still wouldn't associate it with OWS (generally speaking).

Yes, it's sort of disgusting how these guys insult the intelligence of people by appealing to the lowest human denominator (tribalism). Nonetheless, Nation of Islam is a shitty organization. I mean, their platform really is a call for theocracy, misogyny, etc. (it's pretty psychotic). In our attempts to reach out to all groups, we should evaluate these groups under the same standard we would evaluate them if they were a group of white people. If Nation of Islam were a group of white people, calling for similar things, we would call them skin heads (or something very similar) .... no offense meant towards punk rockers who like to shave their heads, if there's any of those guys left :)
Point is, diversity is one thing (and a very good thing), but let's not be naive. Bad people and bad ideas come in all stripes.

I wonder, although I feel bad for postal workers, if the service is becoming exceedingly obsolete, what do we do with this giant thing called the post office? They're not going to close down completely, they do still have some business, but first class mail is becoming a thing of the past. I mean, when I heard a Senator talk about her nostalgia for hand written mail, to be honest, I was sort of amused. I bet the last horse and buggy manufacturer said the same thing.
So I guess I question the whole idea of trying to save things from obsolescence. Certainly, electronic mail is more efficient, uses less energy and natural resources, and it's less costly. Therefore, we won't need a post office as large as what we have today. Maybe we should prolong the inevitable, until our economy improves (and can absorb the job losses), but it is inevitable (and we probably shouldn't waste much time denying the obvious).
I'd rather focus on jobs we lost because of a dysfunctional trading system, and tax system that incentivizes outsourcing (as opposed to trying to fight obsolescence, which is futile), and trying to promote more worker owned/managed enterprises (as well as modernizing our physical infrastructure, getting rid of corruption, promoting more participation in our democracy, etc.).
It sort of seems like some group can slap a label like "racist" on something, and a certain segment of people come blindly running (without really thinking about what's actually happening). In this case, the occupy movement winds up loosely associating itself with a theocratic organization with a very dubious history (albeit I assume it was a momentary alliance), and for what? I'm familiar enough with the occupy movement not to read anything dubious into this affair, but it was a silly incident.
