Forum Post: What of the Poor World?

My concern is that the Occupy movement is at the moment, however justifiable and necessary on many levels, is simply a Rich (First) world movement. As encouraging as it is finally to see the American citizens, and many others, begin to "make real the promise of democracy" (King), it is so long now that the majority of the human beings of this earth have suffered to feed the insatiable consumerism which is the foundation of the economic systems so poisoned by greed and corruption. While we must give full support to the Occupy movement, that support must lead us to a better human condition in the main, a better world for all. Otherwise what we have here is simply a redistribution of wealth among the wealthy. Please, please, please realize that someone like me, for example, earning $95,000.00 as a high school teacher in Canada has more in common with the wealthiest on earth than I do with the more than 50% of humanity who live in merciless poverty. My income puts me firmly in the top 1% on the earth, what of that other 99% fellow Occupiers? Where are you on that? For the Occupy movement to sustain and be truly relevant, it must expand its' franchise to the whole of humanity. Join with me on this, I dare you!

the majority of humanity is NOT in your position, by a long shot. the majority of humanity are the abused little pillars that hold you up in your ivory tower when we're done, you're done. you wouldn't be in your position without us. please have the decency to stop talking. NOW.

"thesoulgotsoldontheroadtogold":

Why do you write at the end: "please have the decency to stop talking. NOW." I don't follow your logic.

"thesoulgotsoldontheroadtogold":

But WHO are you asking to "stop talking"? And what will their silence achieve? You're just not making your point clear.

I APPLAUD YOU, "kmaroney", I'm with on that 100%.

And I agree with you 100% that the dimension you are bringing up has so far received far too little attention on this site. But I think that is understandable, given that this "collective awakening" is still in its infancy and MUST begin by addressing the pressing domestic concerns.

As the Movement matures, however, it will be up to people like you and me to remind America of the "more than 50% of humanity who live in merciless poverty". SOCIAL JUSTICE knows no borders.

Yes 'kmaroney', I also agree this protest should be for all humanity. For many individuals this IS about standing up and speaking out against domination and exploitation of all humans as well as our environment. In order to instigate real policy change it seems necessary to make concrete suggestions within the structure that is in place. Citing minors being gnawed to the bone in sweatshops or the many other atrocities committed in interest of greed still has many scratching their heads saying.."But what are they really talking about? Their message is unclear."

Right on, "4 truth". You've hit the nail right on the head.

SOCIAL JUSTICE WITHOUT BORDERS!
