Forum Post: What corporate practice do you despise? (Keep it short and to the point, provide only facts, not thoughts)

Posted 13 years ago on Oct. 14, 2011, 4:40 p.m. EST by OpenSky (217)
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

It doesn't have to be big, just some action by a corporation that you think deserves to be criticized. Let's try and keep the "big issues" out of this, as it makes people on the outside think that we only care about specific horse-race issues such as bank bailouts and student loans. And I realize that many of us are just "all around" angry with corporations for what they have done. But let's try pointing out some specifics. We have to make them realize that this movement is about the pent up frustration the 99% has had for decades. This is a "list of grievances" if you will.

Mine: Corporations like to form subsidiary mining companies. This way, they can use the land for as long as they want without consequence. Once the mining site is stripped to the bone, they subsequently make themselves go bankrupt, which releases them of all responsibility when it comes to cleaning up the site and repairing environmental damage.

Once we've got a good list going, I'll add these practices to the original post in a bullet-point form that journalists can understand!

Note: PLEASE NO COPY/PASTE campaign recruiters. Let me refer you to this thread: http://occupywallst.org/forum/why-im-upset-with-the-ron-paul-supporters/#comment-92564

Monsanto wrecking the lives of independent farmers, getting a former board member appointed to the Supreme Court so that they can patent lifeforms. Using natural pollination via insects as an excuse to raid and destroy the crops on independent farms, putting seed-cleaners out of business, destroying public domain seed repositories.

These guys have to be stopped. Watch Food Inc and you'll despise Monsanto too.

[-] 1 points by e000 (371) 13 years ago

I can get behind that. I dislike a lot of what they've done, based on the reports and public records I'm aware of.

[-] 1 points by Flsupport (578) 13 years ago

You got that right......monsanto is a shadow company....the other, Archer Daniels Midland

  • Setting up every country on a global race to the bottom with so-called "Free" Trade.

    • Using tax schemes like the Double Irish + Dutch Sandwich combo to evade taxes.

    • Kickbacks, revolving door, etc. Basically - buying our government for....

    • ...tax loopholes and deregulation that threatens consumers (remember e.coli? salmonella? listeria?) for two examples.

    • Starting pointless wars for profit (military industrial complex) and overthrowing democratically elected leaders of third world countries in favor of totalitarians that "we" want in the office. (Such as what United Fruit Company did to Guatemala for cheap bananas)

    • Subsidizing toxic industries (like oil) and bailing out "too big to fail" companies...at the taxpayer's expense.

And those are just a few things.

Changing my Free Checking account over to a Fee account without sending a registered letter (only plain old USPS, not even an email notification). I learned about the new fee b/c it overdrew my account (had $2.00, fee $8.95, went to -$6.95). This happened while I was out of town on a contract actually creating something, not simply slapping fees on people. This caused my account to be negative and after 5 or so days they started charging $8/day totaling up to a negative $70.95 balance. Of course this paper money generated out of complete thin air due to a switch-a-roo and a bank charge, not an overdraft, could not be fully refunded because "our hands are tied." In this case it was BankAtlantic (but it could have been any of them) and they did "refund" $37 of paper money back to me, so I only "owed" them #33.95. How generous! Thanks BankAtlantic (and all of the other corrupt banking institutions) for not having any customer service and not picking up the phone.

Prisons for profit. Isn't there an incentive for recidivism in this insane model? Isn't just the mere thought of this making you guys sick?

And while we are at it, how about these groups of corporations that do business almost exclusively with the government and are notorious for fraud waste and abuse? Halliburton ring a bell? This "corporations" are especially deserving of scrutiny in my opinion

[-] 1 points by idohomework (4) 13 years ago

Influence peddling thru lobbying. Everyone knows why, I don't have to expand, let's get rid of this crap.

Lets get all corporations out of government offices, and limit their political contributions to what "one" single citizen may do. No permanent lobbying allowed. I'm not idealistic enough to believe it will end corruption, but I think it is a hell of a start.

To sum it up in a nutshell: Using money to buy influence and power and on the other side of the coin exploiting people, the environment, other businesses to make bigger profits.

Chief Exploitation Officer (CEO) pay is obscene. Vast majority are idiots. Cross section of company should anonymously decide CEO pay. Much more fair than cronies screwing shareholders.

Don't know why most politicians want to run the country like a company. Chief exploiters are dictators.

[-] 1 points by RationalReaper (188) 13 years ago

Here it is.....because I have lived through it as a union member and a non union member.

You bust your ass for the company....you need a raise...they say...'No can do...we can't afford to give raises now our profits are only 1% over last years number. They aren't telling you that their profits are actually 200% over the cost of overhead. They then buy a $5 million dollar yacht...and let you know that...rubbing it in your face....OR...they buy out another company. They lay off workers even though they have plenty of work to keep a full compliment going full tilt....they then force you to do twice or thrice the amount of work for the same money. You do it because there isn't any jobs for you to jump to elsewhere that will pay you what you need. Your boss knows this...and that's why he does these things. Now a job you once enjoyed may become a job you resent...but you keep going in...because you have bills to pay. Not only that...you know others are suffering and need work and you are doing your job plus someone else's job....it pisses you off that your boss is a slave driver and a skinflint...and he leases a luxury automobile that he can deduct because the company actually leases it and it's part of the cost of doing business deductions......need I go on?

thanks for sharing!

[-] 0 points by penelopejane123 (8) 13 years ago

This is why we need a law that restricts executive pay to 20 times that of the lowest paid worker or contractor in the company. Then the profits have to be shared more equally.

[-] 1 points by bogusanger7 (83) 13 years ago

Having the judicial system re-enforce their 'ABOVE THE LAW" and illegal actions while they bribe and buy certain ones out.

Excessive pay for executives (should be 20x lowest paid worker maximum)

Super profits

Need higher tax on super rich

[-] 1 points by Monkeyboy69 (150) 13 years ago

It is a free enterprise system a private corporation should be able to pay it's CEO whatever it wants ... If u don like it ..... Tough

[-] 1 points by chrischrischris (143) 13 years ago

Somehow, you managed to create a post that goes against ALL of the wishes the original poster had for this tread. How does that make you feel?

[-] 1 points by penelopejane123 (8) 13 years ago

They are a list of corporate practices I despise. Isn't that what he wanted?

[-] 1 points by chrischrischris (143) 13 years ago

The OP wanted facts, not opinions. Furthermore, you listed opinions without an explanation.

[-] 0 points by ButtPlug (0) 13 years ago

Quit acting like the corporate bitches!! You are the problem with all the bad shit nowadays. Putting your fucking nose where it doesn't belong. Get your ass down here in the park, then you can make a comment against a brother. How do you feel pimping yourself as a greedy know it all, huh. Obama has screwed us all over and you get your tities all floppy.

[-] 1 points by fbush (11) 13 years ago

I want my money from Obama. This corp greed has me all worked up! Got thing we have a circle jerk planned for tonightl, need to release some stress

[-] 1 points by chrischrischris (143) 13 years ago

[-] 0 points by fbush (11) 13 years ago

It feels great to bring down corp greed types like you! Did I ask for the gay sex I had to witness last night, NO. FBUSH FOBAMA

[-] 0 points by Dionysuslives (170) 13 years ago

Um... the fact that they exist... and, in doing so, exploit, dominate, and murder people.

[-] 1 points by OpenSky (217) 13 years ago

I appreciate what you have to say, but it would definitely help if you listed a specific practice that you despise. That way, we can really show the media that our movement is about pent up frustration not necessarily just about specific campaign horse-race issues such as bank bailouts and etc.

[-] 1 points by Dionysuslives (170) 13 years ago

Alright, my main objections to global capitalism include the division of labour into mental and manual work, the notion of "private property," and commodity exchange. I am of the opinion that Classical Marxism is a lost cause and has a tendency to devolve into totalitarianism but think that critique of the global economy should extend beyond a purely symptomatic level. The future is unwritten and, thus, possibilities are endless. At the same time as we think pragmatically about alternatives, I think it`s also important to imagine radically different forms of social cohesion than global capital and the nation-state.

Many more people will come to your side when you are proactive (for “new” Business & Government solutions), instead of reactive (against “old” Business & Government solutions), which is why what we most immediately need is a comprehensive “new” strategy that implements all our various socioeconomic demands at the same time, regardless of party, and although I'm all in favor of taking down today's ineffective and inefficient Top 10% Management System of Business & Government, there's only one way to do it – by fighting bankers as bankers ourselves; that is, using a Focused Direct Democracy organized according to our current Occupations & Generations. Consequently, I have posted a 1-page Summary of the Strategically Weighted Policies, Organizational Operating Structures, and Tactical Investment Procedures necessary to do this at:

http://getsatisfaction.com/americanselect/topics/on_strategic_legal_policy_organizational_operational_structures_tactical_investment_procedures

Join

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/StrategicInternationalSystems/

because we need 100,000 “support clicks” at AmericansElect.org to support a Presidential Candidate -- such as any given political opportunist you'd like to draft -- in support of the above bank-focused platform.

Most importantly, remember, as cited in the first link above, that as Bank Owner-Voters in your 1 of 48 "new" Business Investment Groups (or "new" Congressional Committees) you become the "new" Congress replacing the "old" Congress according to your current Occupation & Generation, called a Focused Direct Democracy.

Therefore, any Candidate (or Leader) therein, regardless of party, is a straw man, a puppet; it's the STRATEGY – the sequence of steps – that the people organize themselves under, in Military Internet Formation of their Individual Purchasing & Group Investment Power, that's important. Sequence is key.

Why? Because there are Natural Social Laws – in mathematical sequence – that are just like Natural Physical Laws, such as the Law of Gravity. You must follow those Natural Social Laws or the result will be Injustice, War, etc.

The FIRST step in Natural Social Law is to CONTROL the Banks as Bank Owner-Voters. If you do not, you will inevitably be UNJUSTLY EXPLOITED by the Top 10% Management Group of Business & Government who have a Legitimate Profit Motive, just like you, to do so.

Consequently, you have no choice but to become Candidates (or Leaders) yourselves as Bank Owner-Voters according to your current Occupation & Generation.

So please JOIN the 2nd link, so we can make our support clicks at AmericansElect.org when called for by e-mail from the group in the 2nd link, and then you will see and feel how your goals can be accomplished within the strategy of the 1st link as a “new” Candidate (or Leader) of your Occupation & Generation.

I'd appreciate it if you didn't copy/paste campaign recruitment when I specifically asked for you not to

[-] 0 points by atki4564 (1259) from Lake Placid, FL 13 years ago

Everyone has the right to reply -- once -- to a thread, and then again to anyone who responds therein again. That's called free speech; to do otherwise is to walk down the slippery slope toward dictatorship. Is dictatorship what you really want?

[-] 2 points by OpenSky (217) 13 years ago

YES I WANT DICTATORSHIP. Comeon, really man? Can't we just have a civil discussion that is at least somewhat near the original point of a thread?

[-] 0 points by atki4564 (1259) from Lake Placid, FL 13 years ago

Put yourself in my shoes, it's very tough when you need to get 100,000 people to join a group web site so that, at exactly the right time, you can email them to give 100,000 support clicks at AmericansElect.org in support of the above bank-focused platform. As such, OWS can't be about mere words, like so MANY groups in the past have been. It has to be about actions, not words.

[-] 2 points by OpenSky (217) 13 years ago

and I appreciate that, but please, create your own thread then. There ARE other people who wish to have their voices heard, without being drowned out by unrelated comments.

[-] 1 points by atki4564 (1259) from Lake Placid, FL 13 years ago

I don't have time to look at 1000's of user names. Sorry, with all due respect to you personally, I will not agree to your request.

[-] 1 points by OpenSky (217) 13 years ago

but by posting in a spam format such as this you inherently put off people who read your messages. Don't you see? Quality, not quantity is what really makes a difference.

[-] 1 points by atki4564 (1259) from Lake Placid, FL 13 years ago

Not by the continuously growing number of people who are joining my group. Now, I've spent enough of my valuable time explaining Natural Social Law to you, so you'll just have wallow in your wholly ineffective and inefficient pursuit of liberty and justice for all while I, and many others at the above 2nd link cited, LOGICALLY do otherwise.

[-] 1 points by OpenSky (217) 13 years ago

sigh Some people just never learn how to be civil.

[-] 1 points by fbush (11) 13 years ago

No free speech for corp greed types like you.

[-] 1 points by atki4564 (1259) from Lake Placid, FL 13 years ago

I love you, but obviously no one has taught you to READ and THINK (the link above) critically before you respond LOGICALLY, not EMOTIONALLY. Peace is the absence of emotion, and so is good judgment. And please don't respond with yet another insult just because I criticized your critical thinking abilities, for this only damages your reputation, not mine.

[-] -1 points by fbush (11) 13 years ago

I despise Obama who has a 1 billon in campaign funds, were did he get it, fudge packing corp executives.

[-] 0 points by penelopejane123 (8) 13 years ago

Regardless of where he got it he needs it to fight the republicans who want the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer. That is the system you have to work within it and vote and make your vote count.

[-] 1 points by fbush (11) 13 years ago

That is how corp greed starts, take for the greater good. I want my free stuff, never vote for him again! I had to watch a guy get butt plugged for this fight.

[-] -1 points by AnalBeads (-1) 13 years ago

Your right fbush. Love your name by the way! The buttfuckers in the white house should be ashamed of their asses. Obama needs to back the fuck off or rally. Bet he won't spend one night with us. He wants his $30,000 steak dinner with lady gaga though. Bitch.
