Forum Post: We need to fix the election system

Big business, special interests, and the rich are the only ones doing the talking. Until we have electoral reform, we will not be heard, and nothing will be done to help the people. As many have said, we need to get money out of politics. Protesters in the streets don't talk as much as billions of dollars.

I get surprised when I see how easily we fail to question the system we are in. Look at the politicians, the businessmen, the leaders around you. Who voted for these people? Who do they really represent? Are we truly thinking about who we vote for or is it just a mindless tick in the box that vaguely seems like it's representative of what we expect from government?

Something everyone can do, everyone should do, is to take back your vote. Use it. Think about it. Don't just give it to the guy who you think might have a chance and is kind of closest to the person you want in government. Find the person who truly shares your views, who themselves reject the way the current political system works. Then vote for them. Or, if that person isn't a candidate, find that person and tell them that you think they should be a candidate. Then support them. Then vote for them. Or, if you can't find such a person, be such a person yourself. Became a candidate, then see what you can do to get people to vote for you.

Don't underestimate the power of the vote. Think about it ... if large portions of this country are truly disenchanted and they use their vote to express that feeling, what kind of remarkable changes could be made? The thing is, we don't do that. We just don't take the time to truly question our motives. I say now is the time to put those old habits aside. Take your vote back and make something of it.

Agreed. I don't think the majority of Americans realize how badly our "election process" has been hijacked by the 1%ers. The 2004 election should have been a wake-up call. I guess people have too short a memory. Our election process should be transparent. You won't be able to get anything changed in that regard for a long time, though, certainly not by 2012 or even 2016.

Yes, we MUST change the electoral system! Visit http://www.sophocracy.com and there you will see a Term Limits model that is rational and, I believe, palatable to voters of all stripes.
