Forum Post: We need to boycott Thanksgiving.

This content is user submitted and not an official statement

We need to show up in the park at 12 noon, hold discussions on how the 1% are controlling us. We need to have a candle light vigil, showing our solidarity with the 99%. Thanksgiving is a 1% holiday, let's not be seduced into celebrating it by our family's .

[-] 2 points by Smg (3) 13 years ago

I feel for you people, this thanksgiving I will thank God for his many blessings, they don't alway come form of cash. I'm not of the 1%. Those supporting you are of the 1%, the 58% are never impressed with hypocrites. It pains me to see you being used, your supporters will be enjoying Thanksgiving Dinner while you are cold and wet.

Here in Britain we boycott Thanksgiving every year and its no big deal.

[-] 1 points by gangstarizm101 (0) 12 years ago

thanksgiving is a national day of mourning for thoisands of native americanz.. the 1 % have indoctrinated us into celebrating a day which was initially a cslebration of the massacre of 700 indiAnz , mostly womwn n children.. my bad 4 typos; smartphone. 30 Million nativez died so we could live as slaves in da land of tha free

[-] 1 points by kingscrosssection (314) 12 years ago

The slaves lost. We are the only country that will kick someone's ass and then give them land and money for kicking their ass. Seems less rational to me.

[-] 1 points by Sinaminn (104) from Sarasota, FL 13 years ago

No turkey? No pie? I think not...

[-] 1 points by technoviking (484) 13 years ago

thanksgiving is a pagan aberration. ostentatious, excessive, vulgar, and completely antichristian

[-] 2 points by mandodod (144) 13 years ago

But so yummy! Turkey with homemade dressing, mashed taters with hot gravy. All the fixens! Beer, wine. Pumpkin pie! OK, it's time to have a joke to help lighten all this up a bit...What do Hillbillies do on Thanksgiving......PUMPKIN!!!!!!!

Thanksgiving in North America had originated from a mix of European and Native traditions. Typically in Europe, festivals were held before and after the harvest cycles to give thanks for a good harvest, and to rejoice together after much hard work with the rest of the community. At the time, Native Americans had also celebrated the end of a harvest season. When Europeans first arrived to the Americas, they brought with them their own harvest festival traditions from Europe, celebrating their safe voyage, peace and good harvest. Though the origins of the holiday in both Canada and the United States are similar, Americans do not typically celebrate the contributions made in Newfoundland, while Canadians do not celebrate the contributions made in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition traces its origins to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. There is also evidence for an earlier harvest celebration on the continent by Spanish explorers in Florida during 1565, as well as thanksgiving feasts in the Virginia Colony. The initial thanksgiving observance at Virginia in 1619 was prompted by the colonists' leaders on the anniversary of the settlement. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. In later years, the tradition was continued by civil leaders such as Governor Bradford who planned a thanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623. While initially, the Plymouth colony did not have enough food to feed half of the 102 colonists, the Wampanoag Native Americans helped the Pilgrims by providing seeds and teaching them to fish. The practice of holding an annual harvest festival like this did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.

According to historian Jeremy Bangs, director of the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum, the Pilgrims may have been influenced by watching the annual services of Thanksgiving for the relief of the siege of Leiden in 1574, while they were staying in Leiden.

The Siege of Leiden occurred during the Eighty Years' War in 1573 and 1574, when the Spanish attempted to capture the rebellious city of Leiden, South Holland, Netherlands, and ultimately failed.

Celebrate Thanksgiving with your family. Do your shopping at small businesses on Black Friday. Don't give your money to heartless corporations like Target that are forcing their employees to come into work (rather than spend time with their families). If you are interested in signing a petition to help Target employees, look on change.org's site.

[-] 1 points by steven2002 (363) 13 years ago

Celebrate with my family? what about the people who are poor and indigent. What about them. Should not the state take care of them, should not they be able to celebrate also? We need to come to the park and talk about how the 1% are screwing us. We need to solidify our support for the 99%.

[-] 0 points by divineright (664) 13 years ago

I'm sorry if your area doesn't have the volunteer network that my area does. We have excellent programs to make sure that everyone can get a hot meal and some company during the holiday. There may not be enough resources at the park to do that for all the homeless and poor in the area, just do what you can.

[-] 1 points by weethepeople (5) 13 years ago

Wow, look at how ingrained the deep programming is, and how sentimentally committed parents are to pass it on to their children. Pity.

These cultural obsessions are the grand bricks in the wall people ! Breaking them is not hate or party spoiling, it is the necessary medicine to get free of the disease. Your celebrations, your spending, your habits, this is the illness that will be looked upon in history as the hypnotic trance of the Piscean Age. OWS is pure courage, pure insight to a communal and peaceful future.

[-] 1 points by roloff (244) 13 years ago

The Turkey is the 1% lets kill them and eat them

[-] 1 points by sinead (474) 13 years ago

"A 1% holiday"????? In a world that has families with members spread across the country, two working parents and very little time, for many Thanksgiving is the one holiday that they all can be together at one time.

Are you really that hard line or is it that you don't have a family that enjoys the pleasure of each other's company?

[-] 1 points by steven2002 (363) 13 years ago

If company's paid fair wages family's would not be spread across the country. What about the poor and indigent, who are they going to celebrate with? It's time the state made the 1% pay so they can take care of the 99%.

[-] 2 points by talkinboutarevolution (54) 13 years ago

The 1% percent do not care about them. they will give a little money off the top and claim it on their taxes, taking more away from this country. Jesus, who is the one along with his father God, is what Thanksgiving is all about. Being thankful to God for his blessings. Like it or not, that's why the holiday was created. Jesus said, "When you give, do not let one hand know what the other hand is doing.? Meaning give and forget it, not try to get some of it back.

[-] 0 points by sinead (474) 13 years ago

Well, you could do like we do and adopt a family that hasn't the means to provide a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. We do each year, and bring all the fixings for them to prepare a meal for their family. We also volunteer at the local mission in our city.....

Why wait for someone else to do something when you can start doing something yourself.

[-] 0 points by Barkode (105) 12 years ago

I'd say celebrate Thanksgiving in a creative, meaningful way:

lol... I have to disagree. We need to show them how to be thankful without all the trimmings and that the people in your life, the day to day miracles and wonders are what we are thankful for not an empty billion dollar scraper being used as a tax deduction that could be refurbished and used as a shelter or the like. I don’t want to be too harsh I am sure that the 1% are grateful for the ones they love, we hope.

Don't mess with Thanksgiving. It is the best holiday of the year. It is the most humble of holidays and the least exploited. Leave it alone.

[-] 2 points by theDaniel (47) 13 years ago

are you serious? the least exploited? it's a holiday that marks the beginning of the consumer spending season, which is based on the exploitation of american indians. best holiday of the year?

[-] 1 points by me2 (534) 13 years ago

That's not what it is for me. That's sad.

[-] 0 points by talkinboutarevolution (54) 13 years ago

Thanksgiving was created to thank God for his blessings. I doubt many people still celebrate it that way.

[-] 2 points by steven2002 (363) 13 years ago

Thanksgiving was created to celebrate the 1% ripping off the native Americans.

[-] 1 points by talkinboutarevolution (54) 12 years ago

I never thought of it that way. That's very much correct, isn't it.

[-] 1 points by steven2002 (363) 12 years ago

Yes, that is why we need to occupy the Thanksgiving Day Parade. WE need to be heard by any means.

[-] 1 points by talkinboutarevolution (54) 12 years ago

Excellent idea!

[-] 0 points by steven2002 (363) 12 years ago

Great, then we should all gather right where NBC has it's cameras. If the cops try to stop us fight back. WE WILL BE HEARD.

[-] 1 points by talkinboutarevolution (54) 12 years ago

Yeah, seems like NBC is the only major news media on our side.

In the United States Thanksgiving (United States)

The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth By Jennie A. Brownscombe (1914) In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition traces its origins to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. No mention of God.

[-] 1 points by theDaniel (47) 13 years ago

I don't know how people are still defending the holiday, they must not know it's true derivation

[-] 1 points by unimportant (716) 13 years ago

Thanksgiving is not promoted for commercialization and I defend having dinner with friends and family. That is what I am fighting for; for Citizens to be able to have a good life and having dinner with friends and family.

Christmas, that is a bit different. I won't be purchasing gifts to give to others. I will be making preserves, jams and jellies, making wooden gifts and so on.

Boycott Christmas staring now.

[-] 1 points by theDaniel (47) 13 years ago

Thanksgiving may or may not have been created to thank God for his blessings.

[-] 0 points by me2 (534) 13 years ago

So ruin it for those who still do. Got it.

[-] 0 points by berniebilines (8) 13 years ago

disagree! Some may need to boycott celebration, but I don't think that thanksgiving is just a corporate Macy's Parade... I want more light than candle light... would rather offer alternative extravaganzas that politically educate and motivate while engaging passersby... on Black Friday occupy spaces for alternative free 'consumption.' Bread and Puppet theateresque parades to entertain and draw visiting tourists to our message.

[-] 0 points by Lizzy0Windsor (36) 13 years ago

You are living in the wealthiest country in history with three meals a day and a roof over your head, unlike much of the world's population and much of humanity throughout history. If you don't give thanks every day you are a complete twat.

[-] 1 points by talkinboutarevolution (54) 13 years ago

You are seriously saying there is not homeless through no fault of their own, critically ill children who cannot get help because there is not enough money in this wealthy society to help them in this country? Go to a food bank this Thanksgiving and help feed the poor. That's what America should be about.

[-] 0 points by steven2002 (363) 13 years ago

If this is such a wealthy nation, why is the state not providing Thanksgivig dinner for the less fortunate. It is because the 1% controls the government. They do not care.

[-] -3 points by Lizzy0Windsor (36) 13 years ago

Most private citizens in the one percent donate generously to the kind of organizations that provide Thanksgiving dinner for the less fortunate. Far more than you ever will.

[-] 1 points by talkinboutarevolution (54) 13 years ago

Yeah, while they gouge people for their services and products the rest of the year. They even give and then try to get some of it back through tax write offs. Some nice people you got there.

[-] 1 points by steven2002 (363) 13 years ago

That is just not true. Do the 1% invite the homeless in to their homes and feed them? Does the 1% share their wealth? No, of course not, all they ever do is make more and more money off the backs of the poor and indigent.

[-] 0 points by TheNewMovement (46) 12 years ago

I wish you would stop sharing your wealth of ignorance...

[-] -3 points by Lizzy0Windsor (36) 13 years ago

It's a time honored fact that Conservatives give more of their own money to private charity. Liberals in general want the state to give more of someone else's money, never their own.

[+] -4 points by MVSN (768) from Stockton, CA 13 years ago

I'm not in the 1% and I celebrate Thanksgiving. So much for your post.

[+] -4 points by BillyD (6) 13 years ago

Please sit in the park in your misery. See where that gets you.

[-] 1 points by talkinboutarevolution (54) 13 years ago

The thing is many people will be sitting in many parks because they have no homes. The 1% gouge them on everything and then make fun of them. You know, not everybody wants to cheat, steal, and lie their way to the top. those who don't wish to live that way have to take life as it comes and deal as best they can. Sometimes things like illnesses and death can put people on the street because of high costs and a lost income. grow a heart and then maybe you will grow up.

[-] 1 points by steven2002 (363) 13 years ago

You are right. The federal government should make sure that all family's are taken care of this holiday. Since Obama is a product of the 1%, he will be enjoying dinner while citizens languish in poverty in this country. It is time the 99% stood up and be heard. It is time the 1% paid their fair share.

[-] 1 points by talkinboutarevolution (54) 12 years ago

And you are right about boycotting Thanksgiving, I am not thankful for this country anymore. Boycotting Black Friday would be an excellent move for OWS as well.

[-] -1 points by BillyD (6) 13 years ago

Kill yourself now.
