Forum Post: We need some marching discipline

Last Thursday, at the Brooklyn Bridge march, we almost took the street to the west of Foley Sq. At one point most of the barricades were pushed down. The police got them back up, and then did something clever. They suddenly opened the front and the marchers set off.

This was almost half an hour before the speeches ended. One of the points of the speeches is to empower the crowd. But the cops wanted to take the pressure off of the Foley perimeter. That wasn't our interest.

We have an interest in showing the cops we can't be pinned in like cattle. Taking a street or corner by force of numbers and intimidation is not violence and is often an attainable victory.

The organizers should control when the march starts. The hip hop band was great in whipping up the crowd, but the march had long started by then.

One more idea are whistles and other noise makers. In mass they have a real intimidation value.

Again, this is not about violence but it is about showing the police that we are empowered.

Beware, the paid povocateurs who encourage violence...their mission is to destroy this movement. Then their corporate media shows the acts of violence they have encouraged or provoked across the news so that there will be a backlash. Don't be manipulated into violence; it's what they want.

Agreed. But we don't have to be push overs either.

No reason to show them respect if they don't show us any.

The NYPD is a disgrace to this country, our history, freedom and democracy, and to our very forefathers and foremothers. Shame on them.

i agree.

these marches need discipline...

a great example is what happened on 5th ave. the cops stopped us and split us up.... some people were crammed in by the blockade while others went straight down 16th street. at the blockade half went east and half went west... we need to keep our numbers and our momentum. when a blockade occurs just keep moving.

The cops are thinking hard on how to psych us out, put us in disadvantageous positions, etc. We need to step up our game, figure out tactics to respond to theirs.

yes. we now know there tactics... when we meet a blockade dont split up... just stand our ground until we can get by, or get arrested.

Take over everything by force! Show the cops that they are overpowered by our 99 to their 1. Tear down the blockades as fast as they put theim up. Get helmets with face protectors so the pepper spray won't slow you down. Take control and run with it. Show them you are the force than can't be reasoned with. Throw your bags of poop at them. They will back off if you call and leave enough messages and sign enough petitions. More drums and cowbells. Make noise to make them deaf. Show them you won't back down and they will. Anarchy is the only human way.

I guess you are being sarcastic. We can't outforce them (and we shouldn't try) but we can sometimes outmaneuver them with the right nonviolent but intimidating tactics.

I would argue against helmets for the time being, unless they get out the teargas grenade launchers, paintball guns and rubber bullets.
