I just went to the census population clock. It says the US population is 312,465,970. There are 435 voting Representatives in the House of Representatives. Therefore, each member represents a little over 700,000 people. No wonder why they don't listen to the people anymore. The number of Reps. was fixed via the Apportionment Act of 1911. Before that the numbers of Reps. grew periodically. If we, the people, had more representation, the House of Reps. would be harder to corrupt and be more accountable to the people.
Comparing the census of 1910 with the one in 2010, there is a 335% increase of the population. If congress would keep pace with population size, there would now be 1456 members of congress.
It would help, unless it remains a 2-party system where most members vote according to party lines.
I would hope that more representatives closer to the people they represent would help.
I would hope too, but I wonder if it would really be effective. Much of congress' legislation comes out of committees, where a select number of members of congress are seated.
Committees three times the size they have now would certainly lead to very different dynamics. I am not sure it would be workable, but it's worth considering.
Our current republic form of government has already proven itself to be a manipulative failure in the pocket of the 1%. Consequently, consider our group's alternative direct democracy government at http://getsatisfaction.com/americanselect/topics/on_strategically_weighted_policies_organizational_operating_structures_tactical_investment_procedures-448eo and then direct comments to our group's 19 members committed to that plan at: http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/StrategicInternationalSystems/

Yea, I've heard of that before.
Steve... you should watch it.. when you realize what they have shown to be the facts...you will then be aware that even our Vote is meaningless.
Have a great Week End
I did and it is depressing. Basically says it doesn't matter how anyone votes, that the votes are determined by the vote counters.
Hope you get the Facts you need from the petition, and the Web site sponsoring it... Btw.. here's the Link
