Forum Post: We Need A National Stop Buying Anything Day.

This content is user submitted and not an official statement

I have read hundreds of threads on this site and realize that there are varied opinions on many subjects, but I feel the main theme is....

How do we get this government to start doing something?

I think its simple and the purest form of non-violent protest. Stop buying stuff.

You want big money out of our politics but nothing will ever get done until the wealthy start feeling it in their pockets books. I'm not talking about the 1%. The 1% depend mainly on investments, very large sums of money. Your not going to hurt them directly. Not yet anyway. I'm talking about a very large group of people, companies, in this country that depend on our daily spending. Its a pretty big group. Stop buying that coffee at Starbucks. Don't buy that new car. Put your credit card away. No Candy, Cokes, New Clothes, Movies, Beer, Wine, you name it. The list is endless. Buy only what you absolutely have to have.

If you had a national movement, it would only take two or three days. Rest assured after a while all the big companies would be on the phone to their representatives in government telling them they better do something.

Nothing ever gets done in this country until the rich start feeling it in their pocket books. It's that simple. What's not simple is getting people together to get it started. It would only take a few days. You stop buying coffee at Starbucks for example for two or three days, their stock holders will be going mad. There are many products to choose from. You really only have to start with one.

a day off work would be more popular

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

But, you'll get into trouble with that and won't make any money.

Just go to work. Save Your Money!

next year I'll have enough saved up for a 1 week vacation to Death Valley CA

Good idea, Stop buying from Dunkin Dounuts Day is where we should start!

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

Good luck getting the cops involved with that one. That actually gives me an idea. OccupyWallStreet should donate "anonymously" to the NYPD a few hundred donuts. Just put them on a stand outside of the barricades with signs saying, "Help yourself. Anonymous."

[-] 1 points by Quark (236) 13 years ago

I wasn't asking police to join. I was asking us!

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

I know. It was just a thought. Just trying to inject a little humor.

Sorry if you took it the wrong way.

[-] 1 points by Quark (236) 13 years ago

lol, I see. Good one.

Instead of just not buying I would love if we can get together to stop buying for one corporation. I do like the idea of withdrawing funds from major banks, only the ones that have participated in fraud.

[-] 2 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

That's my point. It's only going to take one product. One company, which ever company you choose, will feel the pain. Then just move on to next product. They will be on the phone to their congressman. Guarantee it.

[-] 1 points by ddiggs690 (277) 13 years ago

I wish we can get something on the site to organize these things. I have already bought some silverto crash JP Morgan :)

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

Good luck with that one.

i will stop buying on the "stop buying day"

but i'll have to buy 2x more groceries the day before.

does that help?

[-] 1 points by emanresu (13) 13 years ago

I am already observing this 'National Stop Buying Day' because I don't have $$$ to buy anyway. But what would be interesting is to collectively start: "Occupy 2011 holidays buying" so families can just send a small donation to OWS instead of buying any Christmas/Festivus gifts

[-] 1 points by SolveEtCoagula (97) 13 years ago

Pull your money out of big banks and put it into local credit unions and local savings etc!

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

That's a start. But I feel you really need to focus on the people or companies that depend on our spending everyday. Two or three million people stop buying peanut butter for a week or two, its gonna hurt. Trust me. That's how people on wall street make their money. They buy and sell stocks. If sales are down, so is the stock price.

Do you represent the people running this forum or OWS? Can you tell me whether or not this forum, the people running this forum or you have direct ties to the NYCGA; the same NYCGA referred to in the link above?

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

No I don't. I don't have any ties with anyone or any organization on this forum.

Sorry I can't help you.

[-] 1 points by MJMorrow (419) 13 years ago

Sorry for the confusion, are you saying that this forum is not connected with OWS and the NYCGA and you are a member of the forementioned or are you saying that this website is tied to the NYCGA or OWS and you are not a member of OSW and NYCGA or what? Sorry for the wording of my question above. It is late. lol I would like to get some clear answers about the affiliation of this unofficial website. =)

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

All I know is this is the forum on the Occupy Wallstreet site. The NYCGA I don't bother with. Once in awhile I may visit the live stream, but that's about it.

Chromer, I agree with you. Boycotts are very effective ways to get the point across IF you get enough people together. That's the problem. I already boycott a couple corporations I have a serious problem with.

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

We need to pick a product. Not trying to simplify it, but it could be something as simple as say, coffee. Big companies make big money on coffee and so do a lot of stock brokers. Then once that is started. Choose another product. On and on.

[-] 1 points by gnomunny (6819) from St Louis, MO 13 years ago

I'm not sure about one product since most corporations make their money on many, sometimes hundreds, of different products, especially the food conglomerates. It's probably have to be a whole corporation, which would be harder because you'd have to do a bit of research every time you went to the damn store. But I'd be willing to get on board if enough people would get behind it. I already boycott Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. And McDonald's Corp, so I'm trying to do my little part.

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

Not necessarily. Coffee. Its huge. Soft Drinks. Many different brands. But remember most of these products just mentioned are sold in many different stores. If these stores can't sell the product. Then they either have to eat the costs or return the product. Coffee for example is not just sold in one store. It has has huge network of distribution and a huge sales force to boot. Along with being sold in just about every store in the country. Millions of dollars.

Something fishy about the posts by MJMorrow; I see similar questions raised for other threads too. Is this Forum infiltrated by the Feds / Cops?

[-] 1 points by Chromer (124) 13 years ago

I was wondering about that myself.
