I'm not saying that higher education should be free, but I am saying that it should be affordable, just like healthcare.

All anyone needs to do is look at the fraud and snake oil that is for-profit vocational trade schools and they will see what our colleges & universities will become.

Folks need to wake up... colleges are big business capitalist organizations. They are some of the worst kind. If a student is a little to immature, rather than being honest and saving a spot for them a few years away... they sell them a useless B.S. degree that no one is hiring in. They even help the student get a loan to pay for it.

Shop around for a better deal. Actually I think prospective students are going to wise up about this.

and just like health care, the price went up faster than inflation because of government intervention. and just like health care, the answer isn't more of it.

There are plenty of very affordable options. Not everyone has to go to Princeton.

Ivy League institutions are "not for profit" although they do get huge endowments that they tend to hoard or to invest in lavish physical plant improvements.

"For Profit" implies a school that is actually run for profit. Before 1992 or so, only trade schools were "for profit", actual "institutes of higher learning" were not "businesses" they were non-profit.

Now, any snake oil salesman can open up a "college" and start taking people's student loan money & Pell grants.

So, your saying only a well off person should benefit from the privileges of an Ivy League education, none of which are affordable.

Yes, they should be able to pay for whatever they want. Ivy league schools hand out tons of free money anyways. Ivy League schools are not really any better than state universities when it comes to actual marketable skills. Major selection matters much, much more than school selection.

That is what ivy-league is for isnt it!

IMO schools should offer a work-for-tuition program where you are given a job and that is considered tuition. There is also the option of going to community college and then transferring to your local university.

My problem is the exponential growth in education cost, at the rate it is going it will be very difficult even to pay for a local university education for just two year. I am looking at it and by 2016 education cost is going to be 3-5g more than it is today. so 2 years would be like 40-50 grand... which is obscene.

I'm not just talking about ivy league, I'm talking about every school that has ranked on US news. I think all graduate program should at least offer more tuition assistance and stipend options for the underprivileged. It would also be nice if an underprivileged students tuition is merit-based, where his performance is rewarded with a financial waiver.
