The cast of "Glee" often acknowledges that Kevin McHale is one of the best dancers in the group, even though his character is in a wheelchair.
Though McHale, who plays bespectacled glee club member Artie Abrams, may not be able to show off all of his well-honed moves too often on Fox's hit comedy, he definitely makes up for it with his vocal ability. The actor has even scored the approval of Dame Helen Mirren, who is lending her voice to "Glee." Mirren told OK! magazine, "He's got a great voice... and he's a great dancer!"
Since Season 1, McHale has tackled some of the more nerve-wracking classics, soloing on songs like Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T.," Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely," and Season 2's hit mash-up "Thriller/Heads Will Roll."
So it should come as no surprise that McHale is one of the forces behind "Glee's" upcoming Michael Jackson tribute episode. Being one of the King of Pop's biggest fans -- and having a part in nearly every Jackson song covered on the show -- McHale and co-star Harry Shum Jr. went to the writers and suggested a few Jackson classics for the episode.
HuffPost TV caught up with McHale to talk about the highly-anticipated Jackson tribute, Artie's new love interest and what band he's been trying to cover on "Glee" since Season 1. Hint: Darren Criss is also a big fan of the British quartet!
I have to begin by telling you that HuffPost Entertainment recently ran a feature on the best sweater vests in TV and film history, and of course, Artie made the list, so congratulations!
Yes! He better! [Laughs] Oh, thanks, but it's not really even a sweater vest. It's like grandpa sweaters that are eight sizes too big.
Is Artie ever going to get a style makeover?
I don't know. I thought about it and it would be cool, but when I actually tried to picture it, it just felt really weird. It's like, who is Artie without his glasses?
Well, you do get to wear some pretty iconic looks in the upcoming Michael Jackson episode.
That was absolutely insane. The one number we did where everybody wore a different Michael outfit was just incredible. It was like everybody liked somebody else's more than their own. We had no idea what everybody was going to wear until we got to set and were like, "Oh my god! Look at yours!" We were all just freaking out. I had the "Thriller" jacket.
The pretty young things of McKinley High return to the airwaves tonight after a month-long hiatus, and they've got big things up their sleeves for the coming weeks. Including (and especially) that Michael Jackson tribute episode airing January 31. In fact, when we caught up with "Glee" star Kevin McHale on the Golden Globes red carpet this weekend, he couldn't stop gushing about his assignment for "Michael" except what it is he's actually doing.
"I'm a part of three songs. Well, I'm in more but I sing three songs," he said. "I'm getting to do something that's probably the coolest thing I'll ever get to do in my life. I really, really mean that.
"I can't say," he continued, when MTV News' Josh Horowitz asked the obvious question. "It's a duet with Harry. Something within that is so freakin' cool, that, yeah, it's insane."
We'll take your word for it, Kevin. In the meantime, what are your thoughts on "Glee" not getting a spin-off?
"I'll go with whatever they choose," Kevin said of the producers' decision not to launch a separate show. "I think they always do the right thing. Selfishly, I'm happy because everyone gets to stay because I will be there. There were, like, four of us left. I get to terrorize them for another year."
Such an optimistic young lad, that one.
Maybe you already guessed by the title of tonight's episode of 'Glee,' but Mr. Schue is finally going to pop the question to Ms. Pillsbury! Of course, he'll need the help of the glee club to make the proposal extra special.
Emma Pillsbury will perform a rare solo, covering 5th Dimension's 'Wedding Bell Blues' with backing vocals by Mercedes and Coach Sue -- yes, Coach Sue!
In other McKinley High love story lines, Sam joins the school's synchronized swim team in the hopes that his chiseled bod in a Speedo helps win back Mercedes' heart. The two, who shared a fleeting summer romance, duet on 'Grease's 'Summer Nights.' Meanwhile, Becky has her sights set on Artie!
As predicted by AOL Music in out 'Glee' Season 3 songs wish list, the cast will cover Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera's 'Moves Like Jagger'! Artie will do the honors, fittingly mashing the ode to Mick Jagger up with the Rolling Stones' 'Jumpin' Jack Flash.'
Rachel and Santana team up for a rendition of Rihanna's 'We Found Love,' while Rachel sings a stunning ballad version of David Guetta and Usher's club hit 'Without You.'
Rachel, Mercedes, Santana, and Tina cover an old classic, Roberta Flack's 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.' You can listen to all six songs from tonight's episode of 'Glee' before it airs below!
