Forum Post: Vigilantes? What the heck??

7:40 p.m. Protesters set up driver check points at port

The intersection at Seventh and Maritime streets is almost like a rebel checkpoint. Every car that comes through is stopped while protesters question the driver, then debate with the larger group about whether they should be allowed to pass.

"He's a worker," a protester at a car will shout to the group. "He's trying to get home."

Then, they await the larger answer: "Let him go through," the crowd replies, and the driver is allowed on his or her way.

Protesters, however, are refusing to let television news trucks through.

"They work for the 1 percent," the crowd will shout. "We can tell our own story."

Someone want to explain what gives these people the right to stop ANYONE else??? Sorry, I would never, EVER stop for a group of thugs. Someone would die before I stopped my car.

Is this what you people are about? Denying others' freedoms based on your ridiculous notions of who is "allowed" those freedoms?

This is simply unacceptable on every level.

Well, you can't run people over. That is a given. I do agree that they should not be stopping cars, though. If someone gets panicked it could cause an injury.

"Someone would die before I stopped my car."

You know, someone else used this logic to possibly kill a protester today. This is NOT funny.

[-] 2 points by thebeastchasingitstail (1912) 13 years ago

What happened? where?

[-] 1 points by sudoname (1001) from Berkeley, CA 13 years ago

thx

I have been surrounded by thugs in an attempted carjacking--I NEVER stop my car for a group of people not in police uniforms. I would willingly drive over anyone before allowing myself to become a victim. You're correct: there's nothing funny about being threatened by a group of strangers with no authority whatsoever.

Now please tell me, what right do these people have to stop ANYONE on a public road??

[-] 1 points by Disgruntled1 (107) from Kula, HI 13 years ago

None, nada, zip, zero self preservation

[-] 1 points by sudoname (1001) from Berkeley, CA 13 years ago

I'm not defending them for blocking a road. The driver could have turned around or gone in reverse instead of running people over cause he's annoyed with them.

[-] -2 points by Jimboiam (812) 13 years ago

Then maybe they should not stand in the road and stop cars. Do you think people feel safe with a huge crowd of apparently angry people in the road? Think a little old lady feels safe pulling up to that? i am surprised more people have not been killed. It is STUPID STUPID STUPID to block up the roadways of other 99%ers. STOP DOING IT. It will only turn people against the OWS.

[-] 1 points by sudoname (1001) from Berkeley, CA 13 years ago

I'm not defending them, nor would I support what they did. But when it comes to car vs. person, the car should turn around. Taking someone's life is not worth it to get to work.

[-] 0 points by Jimboiam (812) 13 years ago

people in a panic or scared for their lives, usually don't think rationally. They think escape. Should never be put in that position. I am pretty calm under any condition. If i was approached and stopped by a large crowd and was questioned, or if they put their hands on my car in any aggressive manner, i would floor it , and try to hit as few people as possible. I lived through the LA riots when people were being dragged out of their cars. Its not a fun situation. Like I said, its stupid. OWS isn't a mob its a group of protestors.

[-] 1 points by sudoname (1001) from Berkeley, CA 13 years ago

I hope both sides calm down. I want more details on this situation - I'm sure some videos will be up soon.

[-] 0 points by Jimboiam (812) 13 years ago

This right here is the problem. This type of person shoudl not be part of the OWS. He and others like him should be run out.

"Forum Post: OWS will BLOCKADE all streets in America...we will crush Capitalism and stop you from going to work!

we OWS will setup checkpoints all across America!

nobody will be allowed to pass until they swear allegiance to our cause

Solidarity, comrades! "

[-] 1 points by Disgruntled1 (107) from Kula, HI 13 years ago

This is why we have a second ammendment

anosticngixie is not a moderator, it's impersonating one. The moderator's name is agnosticnixie.

That guy is obviously a Fox News troll. And an obvious one ("comerade?" They think we think we're Cold War Russian communists?) There seems to be quite a bit of trolling and misinformation spread through the forums these days.

lol if they think the middle of a \busy road is the place to hold a protest, then sucks to be them.

Im with you on this one.

[-] 1 points by slinkeey (244) 13 years ago

Vigilantes? What crime were they stopping??

[-] 1 points by visceralrebellion (69) 13 years ago

Unknown--you'll have to ask them. Apparently they made up their own laws, along with the authority to enforce them.

[-] 1 points by littrellb (199) from Hillsboro, OR 13 years ago

Was throwing stolen tea into Boston harbor acceptable?

[-] 1 points by slinkeey (244) 13 years ago

I can't wait until they block an ambulance, firetruck or something.. Now we're talking!

[-] 1 points by Dalton (194) 13 years ago

They don't have the right. This is why it's called "civil disobedience".

[-] 1 points by visceralrebellion (69) 13 years ago

If that's the case, they oughtn't be surprised when someone is killed. Ordinary folks aren't going to be used or abused to satisy anyone else's desire for "civil disobedience." I have no issues with the guy in the Merc doing what he needs to do to get away from those people. I certainly would do the same in his position.

[-] 1 points by Frankie (733) 13 years ago

Somebody's going to get their asses kicked (or worse) doing that kind of stuff. I've seen it happen more than once when there have been various protests here and they've blocked traffic.

Plus they're not doing themselves any favors pissing off the general public. If you want to see the tide turn against you right quick, that's a great way to do it.

[-] 1 points by DocWatson (109) 13 years ago

Imagine if Tom cruise rolled up to the blockade. He would have to use his bestest Scientology skills to get out of that jam.

[-] 0 points by Jimboiam (812) 13 years ago

Stop the madness. Leave the other 99%ers alone and don't block their path or anything. A big crowd of people will scare some citizens.

[-] 0 points by agnosticnixie (17) from Laval, QC 13 years ago

You don't have the freedom to kill people with your car so that's an easily solved problem.

[-] 2 points by visceralrebellion (69) 13 years ago

I most certainly do have the right to keep moving away from illegal stops by unauthorized people. I have no obligation whatsoever to obey them, and if I feel threatened I am permitted to do what is necessary to get away.

[-] 0 points by agnosticnixie (17) from Laval, QC 13 years ago

Enjoy your manslaughter trial.

[-] 1 points by visceralrebellion (69) 13 years ago

In these parts it would never go to trial. Charges wouldn't be pressed at all because everyone knows how carjackings, mob beatings, etc. work and both the police and the judges are happy to see a potential victim get away.

[-] 0 points by Jimboiam (812) 13 years ago

Called self defense. Your honor they surrounded my car, they were hitting my car with their hands, they were yelling and demanding i stop for them. I feared for my life. Case dismissed. You are the problem with this movement.

[-] 0 points by agnosticnixie (17) from Laval, QC 13 years ago

That's not self-defence.

[-] 1 points by visceralrebellion (69) 13 years ago

Yes it is self-defense, by any definition. A person in a vehicle going about their business in a car is attacked by a swarming mob and runs one of the mob down trying to get away? Seriously, that's not self-defense?
