I find it quite ironic indeed, that #OWS is becoming guilty of the very thing the Banks are: becoming too big, fractious and greedy.

I believe true Democracy needs no leaders! I really hope you guys stay true to that.

"Because of the limitations of their day, the founding fathers had to settle for something less than a true democracy (Direct Democracy),. They had to settle for a republic."

this isn't correct at all. we have a republic because they did not like the idea of a direct democracy, and neither does any thinking person. it is just mob rule and tyranny of the majority.

We no longer have the limitations our founding fathers had. They had to travel many days by horseback to bring the word of the people to Congress. Today, technology can change that. We don't have to "settle" for anything. The present system is corrupt and politicians only represent their LARGE campaign contributors. They have sold their soul and vote to the highest bidder! Who can represent the people, better than the people? Surely not the crooks that hold office now!

What we have now is tyranny of the MINORITY !!

“The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history - whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by the small elite."

thomas jefferson did not want a direct democracy. nobody did. again you don't understand it. would you like it if 50.1% of the people voted to take all of sparkyjp's money and redistribute it? hey that's direct democracy! majority rules! there is a reason we are set up as a republic, and it has nothing to do with technology. direct democracy is an awful idea.

"To put it simply, Direct Democracy is five wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner."

Verses what? The 535 wolves that reside in DC?

"The time to guard against corruption and tyranny, is before they shall have gotten hold on us. It is better to keep the wolf out of the fold, than to trust to drawing his teeth and talons after he shall have entered."

  • Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia (1787)

Granted, simple glib one liners don't really cut it. In time direct democracy in a well educated society where the people have time to study the issues that are important to them is desirable. The first problem we need to solve is the 535 wolves in DC. Direct Democracy can't help us with that because it isn't in place, and presumably the wolves aren't going to implement it anytime soon. I'm a farmer. I know a good machine from a crappy one (read Egypt). But a good machine in the hands of a lousy operator leads to damaged equipment and loss of crop leading to hunger and debts. we're coming out with better machines all the time but keeping the machine i have running productively means i can aquire a state-of-the-art machine sooner. So let's fix the machine we have (the ballot box is your tool box) and then discuss the new machine.

You say you want a revoulution, well you know, we all want to change the world. No leaders indeed. But, how about government?

[-] 1 points by viho (0) 13 years ago

its 21st century and all people can be connected, how about "government" is decision that people making all together using network just voting for different propositions posted by other people?

True Democracy - is a power of people, not just selected "leaders" in government. Now its possible even do not have "local" government by regions (countries).

How would individual rights and liberty be protected? I agree that centrilaized power corrupted can impact many, this is the struggle. What happens if the majority decides to impose slavery on a minority? How would law be enforced? Who would manage the military or powerful groups? If I click on peace, how will it be implemented? True democracy unfettered is the same as True Free Markets unregulated, isn't it? We are all flawed, arent we?
