America ranks 5th (http://www.politifact.com/florida/statements/2011/oct/14/alan-grayson/alan-grayson-says-united-states-has-fifth-most-une/) in the world for income disparity, does that make sense to you? Quality of life in the US is dwindling right before your eyes. I might not agree with everything these protesters are saying, but what is happening right now in the political system and on wall street is a disgrace to the country.
I'll grant you that a lot of the protesters interviewed in the media are not the brightest, cleanest, or most civil people in the world; but this is obviously an attempt to convince me & you that this movement is from a bunch of "hippies" that you and I cannot relate to.
These people are not begging. Not for jobs, not for money, not for a new ipod... they want fairness. I'm not gonna throw out any numbers (look them up yourself). They're not asking for a hand out, they just want everyone to contribute to the well being of a civilized society.
This is movement is a wake up call. please do some of your own research and see that all this corruption and secret handshaking between corporations and the government is detrimental to the 99% (i.e. you!)
agree
couldnt agree more. But wouldn't it be better if we protest against the government and ask for reform? People power is one of the most powerful power in the whole world. The government can't do anything else other than compromise with the people.
Very good, keep up the positive attitude. Your right, we not all rocket scientists, but we are capable of knowing when we're getting the Corporate Shaft.
Nice post.
actually it's more llike 45th look up the gini index and you'll see there are many more countries with higher income disparities, including third world ones.
Nice catch, spoke too soon; I was referring to wealth. from the linked article (i was wrong to say income):
"Third and most important, these figures refer to wealth (that is, accumulated holdings) rather than income (the funds earned on an annual basis). To his credit, Grayson described the statistics correctly -- he very clearly said "wealth," not income."
Gotcha. Yeah Grayson's one of the better ones in D.C.
ok...give me 15 countries with a better quality of life....looking forward to a response
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality-of-life_Index
This data is from 2005, fast forward 6 years and i'm sure it has grown since the great recession.
ok well first off that is only 12 countries better...so thats not so bad.....but then lets look at the list a little closer...#7 iceland please read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008%E2%80%932011_Icelandic_financial_crisis#Sovereign_debt
oh and #8 Italy, italy is just above greece in the problems in the Euro zone.
so that brings us to at least the top 10..not so bad
oh and by the way the Netherlands has a 52 percent tax...you want the govement to take 52 and give you only 48...maybe up to 9 now...
then onto #10 Spain they hit unemployment of over 20% this year.
Yeah, and everything in the US hasn't been peaches and rainbows since 2005. Our combined unemployed (9.1) and underemployed(18.25) percentage has about the same impact as the 20% in Spain.. I'm pretty sure it (QoL) has decreased and some of the rank 14+ countries have passed us.
are you really comparing the US to an over 20% unemployment country....unemployment means starting....underemployment means not as happy as you could be....come on.............and bring facts if you are going to say that the US is not one of the greatest countries to live in! I love this country and love living here....if it is so bad tell me somehwere you would rather live...
Underemployed also tallies in the astronomy major that is flipping burgers at McDonalds because the government has decided to stop the progress of knowledge by de-funding NASA.
All i'm saying is the margin of wealth between rich and poor is ridiculously large in this country, and getting worse. Obvious greed, when a congressman says he can't live off 400k a year. I'm not asking these people to hand over all of their money to charity, but at least contribute an equal percentage that I do making 40k. Everyone talks about how this country is #1, but I just don't see it.
Anyway, I live in Chicago too and have work in the morning, you know how the commute can be.
Well said. See what you think about this as the 1st order of business http://www.occupywallst.org/forum/our-1st-demand-needs-to-be/
