No matter what system you have in place there will always be those who "have" and those who "have not". There will always be 1% and 99%. However you want to divide it.

There are 3 types of people in the this world. Those who watch things happen, those who make things happen, and those who look at it all and wonder what the hell happened. Those who make things happen are the 1%.

In the end we all have a choice. If you don't want the rich getting richer don't buy their products. Don't buy the iPhone. Don't buy Windows7 or Office or LED TVs. As sheep the 99% make the 1% what they are and there only evil is creating something that the 99% will pay for.

Those who protest are sheep because they do not understand even if they succeed there will always be a 1% and 99%. Final example - in grade school there are the A+ students and the rest. Except in grade school you can't really protest against the top 1%. Perhaps if some of 99% didn't skip class to smoke pot they could have been a A+ students as well. redvod[at]gmail.com

Yes, there will always be a 1 percent and 99 percent, but the discrepancy between the two is the highest in the history of the world. The average CEO makes 365 times more than the average worker. Now, you can boycott certain products and not adhere to outrageous bank rates - but others have no choice. If they want to go to college, they have to taek out student loans. If they want to feed their families, pay the rent, the electricity, transportation, etc then they have to take out loans at 25 APR - maybe that isnt the reality for you, but it is for a lot of people. 98 percent of African-Americans in this country dont have taxabkle wealth, basically they owe more than they have....the bottom 80 percent of the nation's population only have 15 percent of the taxable wealth, and most of that is accumulated by people over the age of 55 who have worked and struggled their whole life to get 'ahead' then are forced to live on a fixed income. Lead, achieve and innovate - yes. Lets just level the playing field so that the parasites at the one percent dont live so vastly different from the rest who make them rich...

But they did protest the A+ student. Our schools have failed over achievers, and made mediocrity the normal.

Can't argue this logic honestly. The poor will always exist. At least as long as there is a "rich". My problem is the obscene gap which keeps growing and growing and growing... Oops. Damn. Product placement. Society needs to mature. Economics and politics will soon follow. We're far from that though.

I think the issue is how wide of a wealth disparity gap is ethically, morally and physically acceptable. I agree with the idea of if you earn it you deserve it but large wealth disparities cause social instability. There is no escaping this fact. Even if all the concentrated wealth was earned fairly. How much is enough?

Thank you for this post.

That is the great thing about America. The opportunity to make something of yourself. The problem is there aren't many people willing to stay late, go above and beyond, and do what it takes.

Personally, I work full-time and go to school full-time. I don't whine about it or complain about it. This is my choice, because I am going to be in the 1% one day. I make things happen for myself, instead of waiting around for a revolution to make everyone rich. I don't have time for that. I don't have time for a "walk out" or to spend a month living on Wall Street. I have obligations, wants, and needs. And, I am going to make sure I get there. I never say "maybe" or "one day". There is only "will". It WILL happen.

"If you can't beat them, join them!"

I am not going to spend my time protesting the rich when I want make money too. I have a brother who is Autistic and I have agreed to take care of him once my parents pass on. I want to give myself, my brother, my husband, and my children a wonderful life. I will not expect a man to do this for me and I will not expect handouts from my government. I want them to let me have the option to succeed or fail. That is all I ask. I just don't want the government to take that away from us.

Does it have to be this hard? Do you want your children or other people's children to have to struggle to get ahead? Live a life of debt?
Socio-economic mobility is best achieved collectively, not individually. Why do you think they promote this 'American dream' bullshit? If you want to be at the top one percent one day (which will never happen because you dont have the means/money to get there)then you will truly understand how nasty, cut-throat and machiavellian you will have to be, and that is not a good message to send you children or anybody else.

No, it doesn't have to be this hard. If everyone would take care of themselves instead of expecting everyone else to do it for them, it would all work out great.

There is no easier way. Someone will ALWAYS get the short end of the stick. ALWAYS... there is no "free" anything or "collective" anything. People are lazy and irresponsible. That is why the American way allows for those lazy and irresponsible individuals to sink on their own, while the rest of us swim.

I'll never get there? That is exactly the attitude of the "cannots". I watched my father work his way up, so will I. I have an expectation for myself. That expectation is to work hard, help others in need who are deserving, and never give up.

I will tell you what... I would GLADLY protest the rich pay 60% in income tax (I will pay it too when I make a lot of money). BUT, I want this money to go to children in poor families (Not their parents), mentally disabled, and the elderly. All other individuals, tough luck. If you are able to walk, talk, and take care of yourself.... no handouts. Only to those who literally... CANNOT.

What do you say to that?

[-] 1 points by ltjaxson (184) 13 years ago

Good luck...

The 1% isn't for everybody, its only for the 1%.

"make the inequality more equal"

You are trying to implement a method of control to create limits.

A+ students and the 1% are apples and oranges! Example Bush was a C student that became president not because of what he knew, but who he knew. In other words an A+ student can know all the shit he wants, but in this world of corporate cronyism, if his daddy can't catch him a break he will inevitably fall into the 99%. Don't confuse cause with correlation, there are many A+ students out there in the park right now because they come from blue collar america and according to status quo that is where they are supposed to stay!

We are not trying get rid of the 1% or capitalism or any other propaganda of the such you may of heard.

We are trying to end the corruption, make politicians do their job instead of playing games with peoples lives, making corps accountable, and make the inequality more equal.

There would still be distinct social classes just closer together and not so hard to move between them.
