It really is time to re-structure the forum here...

[-] 2 points by thebeastchasingitstail (1912) 13 years ago

Open discussion is fine, but this web address is listed as "official" and press is coming here looking for information.

Disinfo trolls shouldn't be allowed to disrupt as much as they have. Sincere debate with opposing views is fine, disinfo troll bullshit & useless bashing adds nothing of value and simply detracts.

Yes, exactly this.

The code for reddit is available. I don't know why they are reinventing the wheel here.

[-] 1 points by DocFluff (19) from Montreal, QC 13 years ago

The suggestion I sent in was for them to just forward to the OWS sub reddit. That way they don't have to lift a finger and they can just use a great system that has been setup for years.

In the meantime people looking to discredit the movement are having a field day. This is really hurting us.

[-] 2 points by chumn54 (8) 13 years ago

Who determines what crap is?

[-] 3 points by DocFluff (19) from Montreal, QC 13 years ago

The same way people do it on reddit: Shit gets downvoted and good stuff gets upvoted.

[-] 1 points by chumn54 (8) 13 years ago

Kinda like the fox guarding the chicken coop, isn't it?

[-] 3 points by DocFluff (19) from Montreal, QC 13 years ago

No, because there are no chickens to guard. Good ideas and discussion get upvoted, while retarded stuff gets downvoted.

[-] 1 points by chumn54 (8) 13 years ago

I think I see where you are going. I agree that offensive cursing, etc. or blatant flaming is counterproductive - as long as passionate opposing views don't get the short stick.

[-] 2 points by WhyIsTheCouchAlwaysWet (316) from Lexington, KY 13 years ago

Going to have to agree. Hell, I'd even be willing to help.

[-] 1 points by ribis (240) 13 years ago

Agreed. Yes, a thread-voting system CAN be abused, but it's more resilient than what we've got here.

[-] 1 points by KerryRawe (47) 13 years ago

"Filter" would mean to censor. Even negative posts give us knowledge. Knowledge of how ignorant, envious, and hateful some people are, when they claim to be the opposite.

[-] 1 points by DocFluff (19) from Montreal, QC 13 years ago

You forget that your time to read things is finite. You should choose your time wisely and read things that are well thought out.

Right now I want you to pick 10 random threads in these forums and see just how many have any kind of coherent thought process and aren't simply spam.

[-] 1 points by KerryRawe (47) 13 years ago

Good point. Perhaps OWS needs some moderators...

[-] 1 points by DocFluff (19) from Montreal, QC 13 years ago

I just sent this to general@occupywallst.org

Anything else that can be done?

Subject: Your forums are terrible and I have a great solution

They're bad. Like really bad. If you've looked at them recently, which you probably haven't because of how polluted they are, you'd see that it's just a yelling match. There's is no discussion because people's posts are lost so quickly. This is also allowing people against OWS to post stuff that makes OWS look bad. You could take the time to set up proper forums, but this requires expertise, time, and lots of man power. The easiest solution is to do this:

On your main page, link the forums button to http://www.reddit.com/r/occupywallstreet . That's it. People will have a proper place to discuss issues, and people posting garbage to try and discredit the movement will get downvoted into the ground.

Good idea brother. This way we can silence those who we disagree with!

[-] 1 points by DocFluff (19) from Montreal, QC 13 years ago

No... that's not the point. The point is to silence the people that are making noise because they have nothing to say.

You can't have a discussion about anything when you are spammed with retard posts like this:

------- Satanic New World Order Rule This Land.. The Antichirst is near.....-------

Determination of crap would require an authority figure and someone to be in charge.

Around here, we use the peoples mike.

[-] 1 points by DocFluff (19) from Montreal, QC 13 years ago

Your people's mic has a way to show if people disagree or agree with what's being said. Reddit has up/down votes. There is no one in charge of reddit. The user base decides what gets upvoted.

[-] 1 points by thebeastchasingitstail (1912) 13 years ago

He is exactly one of the trolls that needs to be banned. Spreading disinformation and useless hate. I've been "watching" him.

Don't respond to him as if he is sincere, he isn't.

[-] 1 points by thebeastchasingitstail (1912) 13 years ago

....say the disinfo troll. STFU "only black man in Manhattan" douche.
