"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!" Mario Savio - Dec 2, 1964 - On the steps of Sproul Hall, UC Berkeley Sit-in Speech.

Mario Savio, a man of brilliance, compassion, and humor, came to public notice as a spokesman for the Free Speech Movement at the University of California in 1964. Having spent the summer as a civil rights worker in segregationist Mississippi, Savio returned to Berkeley at a time when students throughout the country were beginning to mobilize in support of racial justice and against the deepening American involvement in Vietnam.
i was 15 (1969) when i was first arrested back in those days that most call "the anti-war movement". for us, it was a pro-democracy movement - we were being drafted, yet did not have the essential rights of a US citizen - not even allowed to vote ! a blast from the past - the SDS is now being resurrected - http://www.newsds.org/ i love it and i love the spirit of the occupy movement. i am active in many occupy groups and i hope we can avoid the 1960's - 1970's SDS mistakes regarding violence. keep it non-violent, please. And lets also avoid the 1960's - 1970's SDS mistakes regarding government infiltration.
Let's do away with money and return to a barter system. I'll give you half an apple for your common sense.
