How does the structure of unions in the U.S. differ from other countries and why?

We have, what I call, the fiefdom model of unions. What that means is you have a boss that controls the union staff jobs and often controls the hiring in the industry. This is still true for the construction industry and a lot of other trades, too.

The fact that your boss is dipping into the health fund or getting kickbacks from the pension fund or is involved in some kind of racket involving nonunion workers, this is not your problem, because you have to work and provide food for your family. … It's a union model that represents the Middle Ages much more than modern capitalism.

Mafia, eh? Don Cologne that why people hate Unions I cannot blame them.

Talk about the retraining fund in the United Auto Workers union and how it influences the union's organizing.

These were ostensibly set up for retraining and now involve a whole bunch of different kinds of expenditures like childcare funds and so forth. … The administrative expenses are as high as 40%, and they generate a lot of opportunities for self-dealing. The leadership is able to spend these funds to sponsor stock car races … you know, black tie parties, they get to go out to Las Vegas. … It ties the union leadership to employers in ways that, I think, are really unhealthy. The members are able to learn little about what's going on with these funds. … There's nothing really criminal that's been revealed so far. I think the funds are corrupting in the sense that they tend to promote interests of the leadership as against concerns of the membership, but that's not illegal.

Nothing change since the 1950s when the Union heads were on hauled up for Senate Testiomy.

The continental European countries are all very, very different. France, Italy, Spain--you have national unions there that are not based on exclusive jurisdictions and exclusive bargaining. Basically, the American system is 20,000 little fiefdoms, 20,000 local unions, that are pretty autonomous. And each union boss controls the territory and is able to award these jobs. The workers have very little or nothing to say about who the union president is on a national level.

[Automatic dues check-off] means that, unlike the European system, as a union leader, I'm no longer really dependent for my income on voluntary contributions from the workers. So I can disregard their preferences much easier. … In Europe, the union leaders have to depend upon the dues that are voluntarily contributed by the members, so if the members don't like what the union is doing, they stop paying dues, or they pay dues to another union. They can switch from one union to another. …

I bet Jimmy Hoffa, Turkema would not like this at all lololol.

Union head is like Bully in the playground asking for your lunch money.

LOL Yep people in Unions have a natural affinity for anyone who complains about the ability of a few wealthy to control the world by buying off democratically elected representative, But what people with teaspoon depth perceptions can't seem to grasp is that just because the OWS and the people from UNIONS happen to resonate at the same ideological frequency does not mean UNIONS control the OWS in any way shape or form. What is obvious is that blind bigoted HATRED OF UNIONS controls the person who started this thread
