Ultimately nothing will change unless the way people act and think change.

Nothing will change until we stop reveling in excess as a race. As long as excess is glorified people will seek out excess by any means necessary.

I have no desire to go all green, or be Mr survivalist or anything of the sort, but there must be a point when enough is enough.

Everything that you are against here is the result of rampant greed. The reason you will do nothing is that to fix the real problem, you must first fix yourselves.

Very true. And getting enough people to agree with that. The challenge is in getting a couple hundred million people to change twenty years of rampant consumerism. If that doesn't happen, there's no chance.

It goes a lot further back than that. To the beginning really. You must combat consumerism to be sure. However, along with greed the opposite must also be dealt with. People blindly following along with the rich and powerful just because they are.

That goes back to the most primal of instincts, the pack following the alpha.

This sort of movement is against alpha mentality. The USA is very much a pack minded country. From high school, to sports teams, to corporate affiliation, to religion, to the clothes you buy and the home you live in, to the hobbies you partake of.

Everything is an excuse to join a pack and every pack has it's alpha.

This needs to stop.

It's not just the USA. We're the biggest consumers, of course, but you're right about pack mentality having something to do with it. And therein lies a problem; we're just animals so the pack mentality is really rooted in our DNA. Fighting human nature is a never ending struggle.
