The cops are using a strategy to keep back the crowd by moving aggressively forward with their night sticks. What they do is lunge forward with the night sticks and swing them around like mad trying to menace the crowd to keep them back. Every once in a while, a student might receive a glancing blow resulting in a bruise, but no one is really getting hurt. Its just a technique to keep control of the crowd and a self defensive measure for the officers.
If the crowd were to retreat versus holding their ground then they wouldnt receive any blows. If the cops were really intent on hurting the students then it would look like the Rodney King beating. Since Occupiers dont like the pepper spray technique of crowd control, police must resort to the night-stick routine which doesnt look too kind.
I love that "Glancing Blows" are totally cool. All Violence is Wrong. No matter who is doing it.
do you know the definition of the term "glancing"?
The problem with the occupy people is they do not exercise their second amendment rights. Just imagine, what will the police do when five thousand armed citizens say we are not going to be assulted by you today? Start a war? There are 300 million citizens in the U.S. and sheep as they are allow them selves to be hearded by a few sheep dogs. Pathetic!
It was over the tents. Berkeley rules say no camping. (camping not a facet of assembly). Police went in to take the tents (camping shelters) not do disperse the assembly. students tried to stop them from taking the prohibited shelters. (confrontation). Police pushed them back, confiscated the tents. (finished their objective.) crowd brought in more tents. (no real gains or losses here.)
Right now, its still tents (shelters.) But there was a post on this board a few days back, that asked an excellent question. What if you painted your message on your tent? And argued it was no longer a shelter, but a sign? If you did that, is it still a shelter, or has it become your free speech? Worth trying, it would keep the courts busy and we might see different definitions of what constitutes free speech. A shelter could become free speech.
On a side note, its dumb to confront police and keep them from taking your stupid tents that have been disallowed by the university (who gets to make the rules for their grounds.) You can get hurt. SO I have posted protest tactics that will keep us all safe as we protest.

And may I recommend this site as well for non-violence for our message.

HAHAH! yeah the batons only look like they are bouncing on their heads. its an illusion aaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahah!
The batons are not hitting anyone's head. If they were, then the students would go down. The cops lunge forward with their baton and its aimed at the stomachs. The crowd then jumps back. For those that dont jump back, then they might catch a bit of it but the most that can happen is the wind gets knocked out of them. Nothing permanent. When you are dealing with an out of control crowd, these are the things you have to do.
