Occupy needs to form a new party. The 99 percent or whatever you want to call it, but it has to be a party, with non corporate backed candidates who pledge to the agreed upon ideals of the movement and will take over congress and the white house.
Basic principles would be:
Ending Central Banks
Ending all current wars (including on drugs) and withdrawing troops from overseas
Getting all money out of politics
Pursuing criminal charges against corrupt bankers
Breaking the monopoly and influence corporations have over the media and regulatory agencies like the FDA
Total overhaul of the education system
Restoring unions
Transition to renewable and clean energy (Not nuclear or natural gas)
The last 3 would turn a lot of people away from the Party. The first 5 look good for the most part though.
If people are opposed to those then they suffer from a criminal lack of information, and we will be more than willing to give it to them.
How did the UAW in Detroit fair in the long run?
UAW isn't doing well, but that has nothing to do with the overall need of unions in this country. It's no coincidence that there were strong unions when this country actually had a middle class. The auto industry and Michigan's economy is just in the toilet in general from the absurd policies the last few decades.
Unions result in people being paid more, sometimes much more, than they are actually worth. As a result, there are less jobs.
In the meantime set up economic boycotts. Beyond not banking with the major ones, don't buy from certain companies like BP, Walmart, Hershey, etc. That is the best protest you can actually do.
Agreed. Call it the "Us party".
And the first thing this party does is set up online voting so everyone can vote every day for the shit they want.
This is unity, this is democracy, this is marginalizing the 1%. Good riddance to representative corruption!
We can start here. This needs to be at the forefront of the movement, on the website, and a chosen representative(s) should be announcing this to the media. The process should be underway with deciding on the issues and finding people to run
Honestly, I'd be more than happy to run for local or state office on most if not all of that platform as soon as I get out of college, and I'd love to have a national candidate with an actual shot at a local, state, or national position that would agree to do the majority of those things.
Where do I sign up?
