Forum Post: The Shock Doctrine (documentary)

Posted 12 years ago on July 1, 2012, 7:19 a.m. EST by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL
This content is user submitted and not an official statement

This must-see documentary, based upon The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein, shows how various shock events (both man-made and natural) have been successfully utilized to implement Free Market capitalism in the wake of population confusion. Drawing parallels between electro-shock therapy and torture techniques employed by government agencies like the CIA, Klein deftly shows how these techniques have been used in the past in such countries as Chile, Argentina, England, Russia, and Iraq.

Think these techniques could never be used in the USA?

Think again. Human nature is the same everywhere. The power-elite do whatever they want to accomplish their goals everywhere.

These techniques are well-known and have been successfully tested and proven in other countries. As the gap between the Rich and Poor in the US continues, look for more shock events such as 9/11, Katrina, and the economic collapse to provide an opportunity for predatory capitalism and population control to move in while everyone is caught offguard.

The political rancor of Republicans is fed by their desire to return the country to a pre-New Deal economy where almost all of the job creation is in the private sector and driven by profit.

This is the dynamic of postwar deregulated economy based consumerism for the last 50 years at least. This always has been the Republican strategy. The private sector based economy driven by consumerism and higher profits relocated production offshore to increase profits with lower labor costs which had the unintended consequence of decreasing disposable income here which fed consumption. There should be no surprise that the country is on the brink of another Great Depression.

What the country needs to do is recapture job creation in the public sector as a counterbalance to the private sector to guarantee that the unemployment rate never exceeds a minimum level and that a living wage is paid to every worker that is high enough to sustain optimal consumption levels.

Consumption level should be the driving influence behind production instead of profits.

Those are good observations. I am a lifelong Dem, and just completely fail to understand why the (R)s are so successful at hoodwinking people to accept their propaganda. Why can't people see them for what they are? Are there just that many people who are devoid of conscience and compassion?

We've been mesmerized by a monstrous proganda machine running since the Roaring Twenties. The mass media has been used to impose mind control without our consent, of course.

Those video clips are from "The Century of the Self", usually shown in 4 parts. shadz66 had told me about them, and when I finished watching them, I went into a brief depressive episode.

Anyway, if you haven't seen the entire documentary, you can start with the link below. One of the most eye-opening documentaries I have ever seen.

Amazing. It's a comprehensive summary of the history of 20th century politics and economics. I think the majority of people cannot have a rational discussion for a number of reasons, but mainly they have to be taught how to do this. It doesn't happen naturally. When Roosevelt started this trend business leaders and the Republicans conspired against it. Clinton killed the New Deal without understanding what he had done until nearly 10 years after he was out of office.

Yes, putting "zippergate" aside, I think his repeal of Glass-Steagall was one of the biggest mistakes he made as Prez. But he wasn't an economist or financial expert. I think he was probably influenced by the wrong people which ultimately led to a betrayal of his party and the American people.

And let us never forget that the (R)s were responsible for crafting that repeal. Clinton merely signed it into law. I wonder if he fully understood the ramifications of what he was doing.

Senator Dorgan (D) ND understood that the Gramm Leach Bliley law was a time bomb that would vaporize huge chunks of the economy.

Yep. He spoke the truth then and nobody listened. And look at the result -- financial and class warfare. What if Sen. Bernie Sanders is speaking the truth now and nobody is listening?

Result = American slavery reinstituted under neo-feudalism.

I hadn't seen this article, but this irrational opposition to everything the Democrats proposed out of necessity follows a pattern of goose-stepping stonewalling reactionaries.

How long can the free press keep their blinders on and not be alarmed by the perils of the new Repiblican agenda.

[-] 1 points by Shule (2638) 12 years ago

Unfortunately, I feel a lot of it is driven by race hate. Too many Rs can't stand seeing minorities smart enough to take advantage of what society offers and getting ahead.

[-] 2 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

You may be right. I really don't want to think that's the case in most instances, but it is probably undeniable for a certain percentage (hopefully small percentage) of the population.

Good movie. I just finished watching it.

[-] 3 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

Yes, I thought it was excellent, that's why I posted it. What was it that most stood out in your mind (I'm just curious)?

[-] 4 points by PeterKropotkin (1050) from Oakland, CA 12 years ago

Well I already knew most of the facts in the documentary but it's always nice to see a visual representation of the things that you read. I liked the interviews of the people who had been apart of some of the events in the movie. One thing I didn't know was that th chicago school was an out growth of the Austrian school of economics but it makes sense that it would be. It also makes me hate Friedman even more than I did before, if that's even possible.

It also makes me wonder why normal everyday working people would accept this ideology of free market capitalism when it is so ruinous to their lives. I guess this is what Gramsci meant the by cultural hegemony of the elite class.

[-] 3 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

I am not familiar with Gramsci (maybe because I'm old). What is s/he known for?

[-] 1 points by PeterKropotkin (1050) from Oakland, CA 12 years ago

He was an Italian Marxist that was imprisoned by Mussollini before WW2. Just google Antonio Gramsci and you can learn more.

[-] 2 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

Thanks!

Also, if you are interested in Marxisim and I don't mean soviet style socialism where the state replaces private enterprise you should check out Richard Wolffs site. There is so much good information and online classes on here you could spend a couple of days absorbing it. He also does a weekly ecomomic update that I listen to regularly.

http://rdwolff.com/

[-] 3 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

Thanks for that. What I am most interested in, and have argued from almost day one on this site, is the Scandinavian model and how it could be applied here. They repeatedly place at the top of many statistics in standard of living and egalitarian conditions for all of their people. Opponents try to shoot me down repeatedly about that, but then I just keep throwing the facts back in their face and they usually shut up after a while.

[-] 1 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

what is the Scandinavian model ?

[-] 3 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

Here are some of my previous posts from months ago that should provide plenty of input. If you are not satisfied with this please let me know what you are specifically looking for and I will attempt to provide it.

I'm looking for 140 characters or less

[-] 2 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

Not sure that would adequately convey a proper impression. Are you looking for description of government? Tax structure and benefits therefrom? Societal overview? What?

More specifics please.

[-] 2 points by DKAtoday (33802) from Coon Rapids, MN 12 years ago

I think he is asking how to tweet the info. I sent the info on my comment below.

[-] 2 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

those three: each in single sentence subject format

[-] 3 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

Here you go, but I am quite uncomfortable with this level of brevity. If you are using it to twitter, perhaps you can simplify to your purposes.

Government = Social Democracy, Prime Minister and Parliamentary style government. Multiple parties comprise parliament.

Tax structure and benefits = I found this impossible to sum up in one sentence, but can offer you this link where you might be able to distill what you are looking for down to whatever purpose you need:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2008/nov/16/sweden-tax-burden-welfare

Social overview = Again, I just couldn't do justice to the level of brevity you wanted, but believe the best brief summation I have found would come from the CIA Factbook here:

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/sw.html

Got it covered now? Let me know if you need more info.

[-] 2 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

As DKAtoday has indicated, are you wanting to tweet this info? I know nothing about twitter, but trying to sum up those 3 things in 3 sentences seems very difficult/impossible for me. I can try, but feel strongly that it will immediately lead to possible misinterpretation.

[-] 2 points by MattLHolck (16833) from San Diego, CA 12 years ago

misinterpretation may be addressed

That's a reasonable demand considering that the scandanavian countries are doing the best during this disaster. Although I would like to go further than that I can see why it would be appealing.

What is most significant about it is that a Plan of Attack devised by the time's worst minds, Shock Doctrine, experimented on Chile with disastrous effects, is now being applied to the US.

http://occupywallst.org/forum/vote-or-stfu/

Voter Suppression, Union Busting, Flaccid Political Action, Citizens United Purchased Elections (WI), Another WMD-GOP Witch Hunt, Big $ and Biz Always Turns Out, Americans Have the Lowest Turnout, and YOU Wonder How it Got This Way and Don't Know What to do??? This is part of the Shock Doctrine plan of attack in the Class War being waged by the 1% PTB and their GOP soldiers, against us 99%. It's happening to the USPS as addressed in a new Occupy post. Our only means to fight back is to VOTE! But the propaganda (and CU money) is crushing!

Humans are humans, and power corrupts everytime.

Its why a "democracy" is such hard work. IT requires all the citizens to be engaged on what is going on, and make good, long term decisions.

Very tough in a McSpend-It-All world.

[-] 2 points by Underdog (2971) from Clermont, FL 12 years ago

True. Eternal vigilance is required, and I think a lot of people are just beginning to wake up to that realization.

We haven't been under a capitalist system in about 100 years. It is not the free market that has failed...it is central economic planning that has.
