In past months the "right" has managed to make "regulation" a dirty word. Something that stifles economic growth and personal liberty.
It was government regulation that stopped the use of DDT, mandated catalytic converters for cars, and banned the use of lead in gasoline and paint. The list could go on and on!
It was the dismanteling of banking regulations that allowed savings banks and commercial banks to join, and for them to gamble our money away with shady practices.
Government regulations have always been used to protect individuals from corperations and businesses that lack the financial or moral incentive to do the right thing.
We need regulations! I think we must start with regulation of lobbyist and campaign finance. Only then will we make headway with the bankers and the polluters.
