Since the formation of the Roman republic, this world has been hoodwinked into thinking that 'democratic' republic with it's elected representatives IS democracy. But it's originators knew better. There have only ever been two democracies on this earth. Athens and Venice, neither was perfect. They both had their problems. But in spite of their flaws, they both produced staggering progress in science and art. The modern world has benefited in science, less so in art, primarily due to the oil glut(which btw has probably peaked causing the global economic fallout which spurs the current populism). We cannot however say that our modern democratic republics are functioning better than either Athens or Venice. We can say with reasonable certainty that communism is a red herring doomed to fall into totalitarian tyrany. Not that monarchy, dictatorship, or overt oligarchy do any better for the 99%.

Infact the only proven form of government not yet tested in the modern era is (true) democracy. What then should we do? In my opinion the only hope humanity has of reaching a relatively peaceful equilibrium with nature and each other has to be to abandon the fraudulent notion of elections which pervade modern 'democracy' and return to sortition(random selection like we have for jury duty), as the originators of democracy intended.

You can no more take money(or celebrity ala the governator) out of election, than you can take the stars out of the sky. And you can no more abolish capitalism than you can abolish breathing. Even in communist Russia etc. they still had money, it was even harder to get than it is here. No there is as far as I can tell only one way up: sortition. Anything less would be literally insane. That is repeating the same thing and expecting different results.

If this thing goes as far as it did in Egypt sortition had better be the first word on our lips or the whole thing will just be another case of meet the new boss same as the old boss.

Well I disagree about capitalism and democracy being mutually exclusive. But I think randomly selected congress people would stand a lot better shot of keeping corporate greed in check. Did you know that in the first few decades of the U.S. corporate charters had specific time limits and operational constraints to keep corporate power from becoming a tool of tyrants? Hard to imagine now. Even in Venice and Athens there were aristocrats and wealthy families of influence. But these were still the only democracies this world has ever seen. Mixed constitutions and their elections are designed to promote oligarchy by stealh.

Yep do it like they do jury selection or state lotto. Simple fair and zero corruption.

Looking up sortition, it appears it means selection by casting lots....are we going to roll dice (not necessarily against it depending on what comes up), just wondering
