The police call us civilians. And not generally as a term of affection.
They, on the other hand, think of themselves as “paramilitary” – a convenient word I think they made up, as in, “I’m not a lawyer. I didn’t go to law school. And I can’t practice law. But I’m a paralegal and I hang around with important people and I look great in this outfit!” It’s a lot like that (only with "military" instead of "legal"... I'm sure you see my point).
So, if active duty military and my fellow veterans would like to recalibrate the egos of the police, we could begin by greeting them, "Hello, civilians! We military types salute you! Maybe some day, if you try real hard, you civilians can stop being civilians and come join us!"
There are all sorts of fun places (defending the Constitution, physically harming actual enemies instead of demonstrators, et cetera) this line of discourse might proceed, I am sure.
Enjoy.
Vote out Mayor Bloomberg..

So what. What's the point?
First OWS would need to nominate candidates or at least endorse them. I will be the Green Party candidate in CT 4th district.

"Security forces of ambiguous military status", perhaps?
The reason that this movement is succeeding is because of the stupidity of the police. The movement would have died out if the pigs had not initiated violence. That is always the way it goes - that's how it went with the Civil Rights Movement as well.

This is cool... I just typed "paramilitary" into Wikipedia:
