The National Association of Social Workers, California Chapter Statement of Support for the Occupy Wall Street Movement
The National Association of Social Workers, California Chapter (NASW-CA) would like to endorse the Occupy Wall Street movement. This movement is consistent with the values of the National Association of Social Workers. NASW-CA supports broad social, economic, and political actions to end poverty and the vast inequalities in wealth and income. The NASW Code of Ethics recognizes our responsibility to the broader society through social welfare, public participation, and social and political action. The movement upholds our values as social workers, namely social justice, diversity, equality, and a right to adequate education, healthcare, nutrition, employment, housing, and safety.
NASW-CA supports efforts to educate the public about the unequal distribution of income and wealth. NASW-CA hereby calls for economic policy that includes the elimination of poverty and discrimination, and invests in the social well-being of all members of society.
The National Association of Social Workers, California Chapter represents over 11,000 professional social workers in California who have degrees from accredited social work programs across the country. NASW-CA advocates, on behalf of our members and their clients, for the implementation and improvement of programs and policies designed to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people. With these values in mine, we strongly support this movement.
