It is not too late to obtain the necessary permits to provide portable toilets, potable water, health and sanitation services. This movement has the money to hire lawyers to obtain the permits and to contract to bring in the necessary services.
The park is a private property! they have already tolerated such unsanitary conditions for 4 weeks! Show alittle gratitude and clean up after yourselves and/or let them clean up their property.
if you do not move out, you will likely be forced out/arrested (can you fault them?) imagine you had a bunch of homeless guys camping in your backyard making a mess of things, would you give them 4 weeks?
btw. if this was public property, you would have already been kicked out from day 1
Port-a-poty?
are you in your right fucking mind?
There are US soldiers dying every day in some god forsaken place
facing a lot more than a couple of corrupt cops and pepper spray,
because these bastards thought it would be funny
to fake a war and make some money
Just yesterday they tried to start another one
and you want a
Portapoty?
If you are here to hug a tree or hump a squirrel
please, by all means do
but you better get serious about why you are here
if you are one of those children who thought this was
a cool party, you better head off home before mama
gets upset.
But if you are one of those people who has come to set things right and
bring our boys back home, and give them a life to come home to,
than you better get your head on straight and hold that fucking line when the
time comes.
Now I understand you though life was going to be a walk in the park
well it fucking is
OUR PARK!!!
Now Man up,
you will have the media of the entire world watching you
please for gods sake
don't shame us
the adversary is powerful so we have to be smarter to win. You can beat them at their own game using their rules. That was not done here which is why there will be mass arrests tomorrow morning.
If we don't do something about sanitary conditions the protesters will be ejected from the park....what is your solution?
There are ways to have a greater impact on Wall Street and the Banksters. If we all just withdrew just a small sum of cash all at the same time from our accounts it would probably bring them to their knees overnight.
The park is privately owned but must remain publicly accessible 24/7, via its agreement with the city. This is a temporary situation. OCW will continue.
Get the damn permits!
7-4.2 Permit required to hold or promote a mass gathering; application, issuance, revocation, posting.
(a) No person shall hold or promote, by advertising or otherwise, a mass gathering unless a permit has been issued for the gathering by the permit-issuing official. (b) Application for a permit to promote or hold a mass gathering shall be made to the permit-issuing official, on a form and in a manner prescribed by the State Commissioner of Health, by the person who will promote or hold the mass gathering. Application for a permit to promote or hold a mass gathering shall be made at least 15 days before the first day of advertising and at least 45 days before the first day of the gathering. Water and sewage facilities shall be constructed and operational not later than 48 hours before the first day of the mass gathering. The application shall be accompanied by such plans, reports and specifications as the permit-issuing official shall deem necessary. The plans, reports and specifications shall provide for adequate and satisfactory water supply and sewerage facilities, adequate drainage, adequate toilet and lavatory facilities, adequate refuse storage and disposal facilities, adequate sleeping areas and facilities, wholesome food and sanitary food service, adequate medical facilities, insect and noxious weed control, adequate fire protection, and such other matters as may be appropriate for security of life or health. (c) A separate permit shall be required for each mass gathering. (d) A permit may be revoked by the permit-issuing official or the State Commissioner of Health if he finds that the mass gathering for which the permit was issued is maintained, operated or occupied in violation of law, this Title, or the sanitary code of the health district in which the mass gathering is located. A permit may be revoked upon request of the operator or upon abandonment of operation. (e) A permit issued for the operation of a mass gathering shall be posted or kept on file and made available by the operator on request.
For those of you who never lived in a 'tent city' before, understand that illness spreads quickly if strict hygiene standards are not enforced. It is a valid point unless acquiring 'pink eye' is part of the movement.
We offered weeks ago to provide pro bono services to get the permits but never heard back from OWS. Even if we get the permits, it will costs tens of thousands of dollars to provide portable toilets, clean water and daily sanitation services. OWS has raised money and this would be a good use of it if they want the protests in the park to continue.
ms3000, are you familiar with the process of obtaining the permits? How long would it take, what's required, etc...?
NYS Public Health Law

So if we started today we'd be setting ourselves up for a camp-out in the heart of winter.
What about requirements in terms of who applies for it, any fees or necessary legal representation, etc...? Is there anyone here who has applied for a permit or organized a healthy mass gathering before?
I thought the city was not willing to give permits? I think they asked bloomberg when he came down yesterday if they could get permits for tents and he said no.
They can't deny the permits if you pay the fees and get the engineers report unless they pose a danger or risk to public health. If the city denies the permit without good cause, an action can be brought in court to compel them to issue the permits.
good onyou for wanting to help, I hope that you can connect with the right people and get it done
And we all know the mayor will not help with the provision of decent sanitary facilities. He will do it in Central Park for an event, but not for this. He is going to use the "cleanup" as an excuse to instigate trouble.
I support the movement, but expecting the city to foot the bill is not going to help. We need to act like adults and have our actions demand respect. If we allow ourselves to get into "trouble" it only hurts us at this point. This isn't the 60's and we don't want it to be, they failed and we don't want to.
The movement has enough money, but things grew so fast it caught everyone unprepared. The OWS needs to work with city to make sure things are handled safely and that we set up cleaning, sewage, water, etc.
I agree that you should learn from the mistakes of the 60s, where the "authorities" were able to goad some activists into cornering themselves into inopportune actions, which led to trials and imprisonment. But, if the "system" doesn't budge, frustrations will boil over, and factions will split off, which could eventually lead to the same thing. The 1960s did start with folk singers and peaceful marches, but denigrated into the Weathermen and other radical actions.
The thing is, i know some people WANT radicalization. They want a fight because they don't know any other way. We can fix things thru peaceful means... but only if the idiots don't succumb to their baser instincts.
The peaceful way would be the best, but I am not sure that the "haves" will give anything up to the "have-nots", willfully. And, it appears that only one political party, the Democratic, is even capable of giving tepid support to this cause. (And I wouldn't trust them any further than I could throw them either, which at my age, isn't far.) So how can we influence change then, (and not to use the word in the Obama fashion as some generic catchphrase that signified very little).
Not all capitalism is bad. We have social media who can make a profit by supporting us. They provide us with a means of communication and promotion.
If we get enough people calling for reform, politiicans will start to try and appease us. It's already happening. Look at the bills proposed lately, they're bandaid stuff like the jobs bill, or increasing grants for healthcare centers for the underpriviledged. If we keep things up and focus on removing corporate funding, they'll give at some point.
If we remain peaceful and demand respect, we'll get it. It's only when we act like children that police and the establishment come down on us.
The Republicans have no intention of giving in and if they get one of their candidates back in the White House, things could get worse. And, there are enough discontented voters out there to make this happen, unfortunately.
Who keeps track of the money donated to OWS? Is there any accountability?
I notice that the NYCGA donation is via a Nicaraguan organization...yea I'm sure it's on the up and up...
Probably because the stink of entitlement is creating a hazardous atmosphere down there
