Before the great depression the Republicans controlled the Presidency for many terms up until Herbert Hoover. Hoover was President when the stock market crashed. His approach was to let it work itself out. He believed the American people, the church and other institutions would take care of those in need.
FDR won the election overwhelmingly because he promised Americans a new deal. Things like social security, food stamps, unemployment insurance, FDIC insurance and many other social and fiscal programs to help America get out of the depression.
Republicans then and now oppose these types of programs.
Fast forward to this recession. Unarguably the very programs that the Republicans have never liked are the only thing that kept us from falling into another great depression.
So there is no backlash against their ideas today because the programs that the democrats have championed have kept people out of poverty and kept them fed.
It is a catch-22 for the Democrats because their successes in the present and the past have kept the American people from realizing that the Republicans really do care only about the protection of wealth for themselves and the rich in this nation.
