Anyone who thinks the flat tax is a good idea can't do the math. Under this system the poor pay more and the rich pay much less. Even if everyone in the country paid 20% of their income some people would still be subsidized. If I make $40,000 a year and you make $41,000 a year you are paying for the same thing I am getting.
The only fair system, if that's what your looking for, is a system where we all pay our share of the budget. If you are living in a house that you rent with 4 other people and it costs $50,000 year to live in that house a year for rent and utilities, you would probably split the costs evenly between the 5 of you and each renter would pay $10,000 a year.
So, if you use that logic to pay the yearly budget of the US what would your bill be? About $11,000/yr. Even if you don't make that much that is what you should pay or someone else is paying your bills, you are being subsidized. Of course, if your married and have 2 kids you would owe $44,000 a year.
That is why the current graduqated tax system is the best we can do. the rich pay more the middle class pays plenty, and the truly poor don't pay anything. It's just the only way for it to work.
To be clear, as you may know, in the past there were very high taxes for the rich. Around WW I & WW II the top rate was above 90%. The thing is most people didn't really pay that much because the way it was set-up small and big businesses alike re-invested cash into their businesses to avoid the taxman. this resulted in massive expansion realized in the 50's and 60's.
We need to return to this model and forget the 9-9--9 plans, the flat tax, the fair tax and other such voodoo economics.
the best system is where education is number 1 priority, even the least are treated with dignity and respexct, the public forum is open and welcomes new ideas and thought, and all the children go to bed with happy and full tummys.
Making and spending money is good, we need our economy to prosper so we shouldn't penalize those. Here's an idea for a tax that only penalizes people who have money and do not spend it: Inflation. Print money to pay the US Federal Gov budget for 2 years. That would inspire people to put their money to work and would really get the economy going. Guaranteed.
