The Decline and Fall of 'Occupy Wall Street': American Left Has Run Out of Steam

By Nile Gardiner, The Telegraph

The failure of the Occupy Wall Street movement and its descent into "Lord of the Flies"-style chaos, and in many instances thuggery and criminality, is emblematic of the dramatic decline of the Left in the United States. The ragtag encampments that President Obama earlier described as expressing “the frustrations that the American people feel”, are now being swept from the streets of New York, Oakland, Portland, and across America, no doubt to great applause from locals who have had to put up for weeks with unsanitary tent cities on their doorstep. Nancy Pelosi should now be eating her words after having declared in October: “God bless them, for their spontaneity. It’s independent… it’s young, it’s spontaneous, and it’s focused. And it’s going to be effective.”

The downfall of Occupy Wall Street mirrors a broader malaise on the American Left. Just three years after the election of the “hope and change” president, liberalism in America is in a state of crisis. A recent Gallup poll shows just one in five Americans (21 percent) calling themselves liberal. This compares to 42 percent who are self-described conservatives.

The only thing that has declined and fallen, if this article is any indication, is Nile Gardiner's integrity.

I understand, your rather shocked by the truth and are demeaning Mr. Garndiner for some sort of consolation or feel good vibe.

No, I am utterly unshocked, and commenting on the fact that Mr. Gardiner hasn't the slightest clue what he is bloviating about.

One could say the same for you.

[-] 1 points by buphiloman (840) 13 years ago

Wow!

Looks like 'progmarx' is a full fledged crypto-fascist.

What's it like working with the Nova Mob over at Faux News?

The American Left has been engaged in ragtag encampments probably since even before the Constitution was enacted, at least from the days of Shay's rebellion. As for Nancy Pelosi, only in the United States would a cretin her be considered a leftist and then only by the cretins of the reactionary right. Certainly no self respecting leftist would consider either her part of the left, Obama, or for that matter 99% of elected Democrats part of any legitimate left.

I find our elected officials incompetent to govern. They need some incentive that will mean something to them instead of putting funds at risk that will cause harm to those persons and institutions who can least afford such loss. I suggest that these officials’ pay and/or benefits be cut if and/or when they fail to do their job. As it is, party “a” threatens to harm parties “”d” through “z” if parties “b” and “c” can’t come to an agreement. It makes no sense whatsoever to threaten Congress with cuts that will not have any impact on them directly. Our Constitution establishes the type of government we are to have. We do not need to establish any “sub” groups within these institutions. They are all responsible collectively to govern and if/when they fail to do so they are all liable collectively. The “carrot and stick” method only works when the carrot or stick is guaranteed to the same one. These officials have received their carrot upon being elected as they shall receive full pay and full benefits for the rest of their life even if they only serve one term. I say put all options “on the table” including their lifetime pay and benefits. I’m of the position that such a “stick” would cause these officials to get their head out of the clouds and their feet on the ground.

A recent Gallup poll shows just one in five Americans knows the difference betweet "news" and "opinion".

A recent Gallup poll revealed that this is due to immersing oneself in Fox news and other NewCorp media.

Fox News=Faux News

[-] 1 points by progmarx (66) 13 years ago

You only say this because you may not agree with this story. If you had agreed with the content you wouldn't have made such a lame reply.

[-] 1 points by Fluke (47) from Örebro, Örebro Län 13 years ago

No. That story is a just another very common example of a publishment that is actually a wish from those who publish it, not a fact. Now, i said Fox News=Faux News. I don´t mean everything they publish is false but they are, even without trying to hide it, most biased and thus not trustworthy here.

If you didn't mean it why say it? Hate to bust your bubble but EVERY news organization is biased some way or another.

[-] 0 points by Fluke (47) from Örebro, Örebro Län 13 years ago

Yes and that´s exactly why i rarely refer to silly news articles like you do.

[-] -1 points by Perspective (-243) 13 years ago

I referred to a silly news article? So if you don't believe any news organization where do you get your news from? Maybe if you stated some facts to back up your statement someone might believe you but in typical OWS fashion if it doesn't fit your needs it must be false huh?

[-] 0 points by Fluke (47) from Örebro, Örebro Län 13 years ago

You work for Fox News? What are the facts in that article? Line for line it is just opinions based on cherry-picked information to suit their need of portraying OWS as dirty, dangerous and dreadful. What is said cannot be called facts, it is anti-OWS rethoric.

If Fox News gathered thousands of people somewhere for whatever purpose there would be "thuggery and criminality". "ragtag encampments" can provide exactly what you need and be comfortable too. "great applause from locals" could be heard if some Neo-Nazis were marching by, it depends on who you ask and so on!

The different polls "saying this saying that" is being made to provide certain interests with the information they need to produce the opinions they need.

Opportunism - articles like the one you refer to is coming out now because the police got orders to attack the demonstrations. Which is exactly what the producers at Fox News and other such utterly politically smudged news organisations have craved all along.

Who are you trying to fool here?

They (Fox News and others) declare the end, when in fact it has only started. :D

I am not hoping to burst your bubble though. It is way too small with very thick walls.

[-] -1 points by Perspective (-243) 13 years ago

Nice way to dodge the questions. Here they are again. "I referred to a silly news article? So if you don't believe any news organization where do you get your news from? Maybe if you stated some facts to back up your statement someone might believe you but in typical OWS fashion if it doesn't fit your needs it must be false huh?"

[-] -2 points by Perspective (-243) 13 years ago

Oh another person who ignores facts they don't like.

[-] 2 points by Fluke (47) from Örebro, Örebro Län 13 years ago

Haha! The slogan should be "Fox News - We who ignores or spin the facts we don't like."

[-] -2 points by progmarx (66) 13 years ago

Nazi Piglosi the rich 1% Heroine of OWS. You can't make this stuff up.
