Forum Post: The American's Creed-I believe in the United States of America, as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed

The American's Creed is the national creed of the United States of America. It was written in 1917 by William Tyler Page as an entry into a patriotic contest. It was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives April 3, 1918.

I believe in the United States of America, as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

There is a disturbing number of posts that direct people to other sites and ask them to identify themselves, essentially harvesting email addresses and other forms of ID. This is one. The sentiments are all very virtuous but how can we authenticate the source? How do I know that this site is not being operated by The Man harvesting IDs in preparation for next season's UnAmerican Activities Committee?

Please exercise a little of the prudence that this site itself cautions you to use in signing up here. This may be what is called in the cybersecurity world a "Honey Pot".

i cried when i read that--

it used to be like- and hopefully with the OWS movement it will again.

now it is time when the 1% are forced to "sacrificed their fortunes"

We live in a country that has good people that have been to hell and back again fighting for our freedom and justice system. I look forward to the day when we can hold our heads up high and say that we are proud to be an American.

do you really believe, that our government sent our young men overseas to fight for our freedom? it was to conquer the world and (economically) enslave there people's-- the same as they have enslaved us all.

our justice system- it is corrupt as hell = how much justice can you afford?

i am ashamed to call myself an American- ask any country what they think of America!

In the end, demonstrator, all wars can be distilled to either or both or two things: money or power -- in some ways very much the same thing.

I do have an observation as one who served during a war, and it's not really a very pretty one. When you are in the field or in combat, the ideals of liberty, justice, freedom, defending a flag or a place on the map -- they mean nothing. Even family and loved ones never enter your mind. The only right you're fighting for is the right to draw your next breath. The only freedom you're fighting for is the freedom to be the one who walks away. The only idal you kill for is the idal of my life being more important than the life of the guy over there who is trying to take mine away.

That, I believe, is the true evil of war and the true tragedy of the warrior.

The concepts we use to get young men and women to be willing to sacrifice their lives and their futures -- in some ways much more horrifying than by dying -- are simply propaganda ladeled heavily on the public so they don't think about what war really is. we found that out with Vietnam and the effect of live television coverage of it, which is why since then, no live (independent) coverage of any war has been allowed.

The words above are beautiful words. But they are only words. There on a page, they mean nothing. It's only when we take the words from the page and make them our way of life that they actually have meaning. That is the challenge we face today -- just as every generation has faced it.

The question is, do we have the courage and the determination to make it come true?

Amazing you understand-
and you are able to talk about your experience- in a logical factional way. it hasn't destroyed you-
you mind is clear and sharp-- impressive

Thank you! I'm never sure how logical I am, or how sharp, but I do appreciate your encouragement. I do agree that we need to come together in the streets -- and in the halls of government, and in the media and everywhere else. OWS has spread to many cities in other countries as well and that is the most amazing thing about this movement.

I also just read that the overreaction by Oakland police has actually brought out more people. This I -- along with many others -- predicted. It wasn't until the police attacks on protestors in Birmingham, AL in the Civil Rights movement and at Kent State University in the anti-war protests that those two movements really took off and captured public imagination.

Please do NOT think I am saying we need martyrs to die for the cause -- that is the furtherest thing from my desires, but I think the strongarm tactics I see developing in many places will help us gain followers.

But I also fear that there will be the unfortunate period of violent clashes before we are taken seriously and I wish that were not true.

Thanks again for your kind words.

The changes needed in our countries and state governments systems does not need to be fought on a battlefield, since the backroads and streets of America will do just fine. I'm getting as many of my freinds involved to spread a the idea that together we can change our world. Occupy needs all the 99% of the people to come together in the streets supporting freedom and justice for all. We need all of our votes counted.

Please don't be ashamed to call yourself an American if your behind our occupy movement. No country can conquer the entire world and rule it. We just have to vote out the corrupt. We need to demand a new leadership to represent us for the good interest of all Nations as well as our own.

nicely put- that kind of thinking - can save this country-

The OWS protesters are THE GREAT PATRIOTS of the hour, fighting to uphold the Constitution. They embody the spirit of 1776 and of "The American's Creed". This was finally recognized a couple of days ago ON CNN, would you believe???

We are The 21st Century Great Patriots. Our fight for freedom and justice has always been and always will be on the table as it has been for many of our forefathers and their families. The only difference is THIS IS OUR FIGHT TODAY

Good point, we need to just state our ideas and links or site addresses are not necessary.

Great sentiment in this thread. All that is needed is a plan in unity to defend the constitution. Article 5 is the constitutions way to empower us in its defense.-

Media has worked very hard to divide us. Academia has been doing it too while empowering those that would conspire to usurp the constitution. The supreme court and congress are also guilty. Time for a thorough restructuring starting with amendments to the constitution.

A effort each evening to create a web conference to discuss Article 5 is beginning.--
