I usually don't post my personal thoughts on forums, but the more I read and experience relating to the phenomenon that is currently occurring in America's streets, the more I am compelled to comment. I generally agree with the issues that the Occupy wall St. movement is fighting for, but I doubt the ultimate effectiveness of the methods in which this battle is being fought. Occupying city squares for weeks and months at a time is a great way to inform the world about what we're thinking and feeling, but it's unfortunately weakening our power to ultimately change the issues that grieve us. The problem is whether we like it or not, whether it's fair, right and just or not, in this country money through the "free" market equals power. The people that make up the "1%" have nearly unlimited amounts of this power, and the people that make up the "99%" have a very limited supply by comparison. Holding a sign in a square isn't going to make this paradigm shift. While we stand and yell, we expend our limited power while the affluent sit back and amass more. The harsh bottom line is that the "1%" hasn't actually done anything wrong according to the system. The "99%" might not like how the "1%" is behaving, but in our system the mass majority (including most of the rich) aren't automatically entitled to money that equates to power and by no means is anyone required to hand over that power without something in exchange. The elite in this country are sitting in the seats they are today because they accumulated American power by navigating through and conquering the system that stood before them. They know the game and they are the all-star team. naturally The "1%" wants to continue playing a game they know they can beat. If we truly want the rules of the game to change, than we first have to become better at this game, with the rules that are currently in place, than the "1%ers" are, and beat them at it. Remember playing the game 500 during recess so many years ago? It's like that. Once you catch the ball you get to go up and make the rules whatever you want, but your not going to catch the ball by sitting on the wall (st.) of the playground glaring at all the other kids that are playing. We've been heard. Good Job. The "1%" know who we are now and how we feel, but they're really not worried yet because we're still sitting atop that wall, glaring at them. It's time to put down our signs. I challenge you all to find an industry that you want to change, and apply for a job in it. If you don't get in the door the first time that's truly OK. Find out why you didn't get in, adjust, and then try again. If you are tenacious you will step through that door eventually. there's nothing written that says you can't because you're not entitled, remember? That also means that you're not really limited either (at least within the rules of the game). once your in, learn the rules and play HARD. Bob and weave your way through the ranks. Play to win with the intention of changing the rules when you do. By the way, don't necessarily tell everybody that's why your playing, because then they'll try their hardest to not let you win. That's one of the rules you have to learn ;) If enough of you take on this challenge, at least some of you will make it to the summit, and then you will be king of the mountain, holding the ball, and perhaps then you will finally get what you yearn for. We can not TALK our ideal reality into existence, WE MUST WORK it into the world like an artist works marble or clay into a priceless masterpiece.
I don't think occupying by itself is the end, but a call for action for people who already are disillusioned by the 1%, and a call for thought and reflection by those who just haven't had this all framed in this reference. It's also an opportunity to consider that there is an alternative to 'all this' , That is where it starts, and that fact I believe they are afraid of, not just the current step of showing the people we all own this country, not them.
I strongly disagree on many things you have written. OWS has created awareness that the system is unfair. The reason why it has caught on is because all across the globe other people are facing the same issues. This is not an accident! A small drop has created a ripple affect and this is a human problem that needs addressing, its that simple. Dialogue is how you bring about change and there needs to be no rules on how we acieve that.
I disagree. The issue is that the rules are changing, becoming far less fair, much harder to beat all of the time, and damaging the country and the world at the same time. Waiting to make your way thru is futile for two reasons:
If you are successful, you will be so compromised and implicated that you will not be able to make any other than small, minor changes. Look at Bill Clinton.
If things go as it looks like they will, either democracy or the planet will give out before you "make it." Is it worth it? What is "making it" anyway?
After all, "If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich."
We need to reestablish the rule of law in the US now.
The one percent is concerned. They are watching this very carefully. They have the power to shut it down anytime they please, using other poor people (police, military) to do so. Look at Chicago, Denver, Boston, all important cities. The plan is to move slowly and shut down locations one by one. (We need a plan to counter. Here's one: when they shut you down, show up at another park the next day.)
But, I really appreciate your comment. Food for thought.
Your wrong. They are scared. Americans can make a difference. We have to hit them were it hurts. Imagine a national movement to not buy corporate products or corporate services. We cannot totally stop using everything they provide but we can start using local products and stores. Stop buying at Walmart and Target. Switch your back account to a credit union. Our forefathers didn't have TV, they didn't have disposable diapers and pepsi products. Look at what happens when the American people are scared with talk of recession. They stop spending and the economy stops. Let's hold the corporations hostage by telling them "We'll start buying again when the corporations support America and use their wealth to make it a better place."
Agreed, and I particularly love the statement -- if we truly want the rules of the game to change, than we first have to become better at this game, with the rules that are currently in place...and beat them at it -- so perhaps you would consider our group's proposal of an alternative online direct democracy of government and business at http://getsatisfaction.com/americanselect/topics/on_strategically_weighted_policies_organizational_operating_structures_tactical_investment_procedures-448eo , hit the facebook “like” button if agreed, and then join our group's 20 members committed to that plan at http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/StrategicInternationalSystems/
1) get the money out of politics. 2) increase representation from the current 720,000 persons per US House Rep.
They are not scared, worst comes to worst they go somewhere else, and that will ABSOLUTELY NOT solve the problem. In fact, it will make it worse.
Seize political power. Take money out of the political equation. This (and only this) will work. Anything else is a half-measure, and will fail. This is why the consensus seems to be to get the money out. We all intuitively know that the "free speech" of "corporate Persons" is insanity. One person, one vote is the American way. If you have more money than another, it in no way justifies more of a voice in government. Take away the power of corporations, unions, and other wealthy special interests, and the will of the people will be what drives the laws, and not the will of big business.
amen
We can build enough guillotines for the 1% and all its supporters
Protests always lead to great gains.
The 1% are scared. Look how they are using the police state, mainstream media, and financial control of politics. Consider how they strain to ignore, deride, and fight the people. The fourth step in that sequence is that the people win.
Upward mobility for the people in general is insignificant (It's not only about a few ghetto kids getting scholarships). We have to work together, and we are. General Strike!
They are not scared, worst comes to worst they go somewhere else, and that will ABSOLUTELY NOT solve the problem. In fact, it will make it worse.
You are the one who is scared. Don't be afraid.
im not scared. I'm not part of the 1% and I certainly do not group myself in with the 99%. Im not part of the mega-rich, but i don't feel like they have wronged me. I worked hard for a good job that has good job security. I am just making an observation that the 1% will never be scared because they would leave the country before anything got too bad.
The 99% is all over the world. You are with us whether you realize it or not.
An interesting point of view unfortunately money and power corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. I do strongly recommend that those who would like to change the system, to restore a government of the people instead of a government of the corporations, that they develop a much better understanding of the system that they wish to change. I did rise to the leadership tier in a major corporation and I have spend a great deal of time with CEO's and Senior Government Officials. The 1% is not scared, and the 1/10% which is the real enemy are surely laughing about this movement but a focused vision and achievable goals in a defined time frame would get their attention because that is indeed how they became members of the 1%.
I appreciate your time and sentiment in writing this, but i totally disagree that "changing my industry from within" is going to be effective. I've been attempting to do that for 20 years (I'm an architect, we are handmaidens to the 1%) and it ain't gonna happen. I just want the 28th Amendment passed, so that money gets out of politics and there's a level playing field. THEN we can work on smashing capitalism. Just my 2c.
things will probably first have to get a lot worse before a critical point is reached where the reaction of the people will be continuous and strong enough to make these powerfull interests tumble ... I don't know wether peacefull protests will be able to accomplish this
strange, I had a couple of replies, now they're missing - I had a notification of a reply, clicked on the link, and they're gone
You give a metaphor of a game played at recess saying: "Remember playing the game 500 during recess so many years ago? It's like that. Once you catch the ball you get to go up and make the rules whatever you want, but your not going to catch the ball by sitting on the wall (st.) of the playground glaring at all the other kids that are playing."
I think the one percent is scared:
After reading that I pictured a group of kids standing by the wall (st.) agreeing with each other (consensus) on the rules of a new game that they would all play together.
The one kid left holding the ball can yell and scream about rules all he wants, it doesn' t matter if nobody is playing his game anymore.
Adam,
They are scared. They've been scared for a long time. If you really want to go deep, they are scared of winter famine, and so they hoard, hoard, hoard (i.e greed). Of course today, with the ability to feed and clothe everyone, why would they need to be sacred? Why do they hoard resources and power? It all comes from fear.
But on a more immediate level they are scared. They know that if enough people revolt, it's all over for them. If they were not afraid of this movement, they would not be sicking the NYPD on them at every turn, and doing their best to militarize Liberty Plaza. If they were not scared why do they mock us at every turn, and do their best co-opt the movement as soon as they can? They are scared.
If they are not scared, why the PATRIOT Act? Why the overwhelming force towards a police state? Why the divide and conquer strategy at every turn? Why do they do their best to control, control, control everything. They are scared.
The good news? They are loosing, day by day, their grip on the American psyche. They are being circumvented, exposed, and called out like never before. People are taking to the streets, people are angry, people are fighting back.
From a technological front - the internet, which they are trying to control, monitor and shut down if necessary, is democratizing forces everywhere. There are technologies now upon us that will allow any device or computer to connect with every other device (wirelessly) WITHOUT a carrier, a middle man, or secret agency monitoring it (they can't, since it's peer to peer and there is no choke points).
They are scared. That much is obvious. And they show that fear by doing their best to keep the rest of us in fear too. Their message - "be afraid, be very afraid".
NO! I REFUSE TO LIVE IN FEAR ANYMORE! And so should you.
way to go John B. I agree, they know the hornets nest has been kicked.

Great comment.
Hell, half of us are already doing that; the people who are actually in the park are only a small portion of this movement. I agree completely with the aims and goals of OWS, and I'm going for a BS (and possibly an M.Eng.) in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT with possible plans for an MBA afterwards. Protesting the way we are currently is only a small part of what's going on; my hope is to eventually gain enough income and prestige that I can begin to drive the country in the other direction.
That said, OWS is sure as hell better than nothing. There is a whole group of people out there who want to see change, yet for a number of reasons (job loss, home loss, bad debt, etc.) they're not in a position to have access to the game. If they can land administrative positions in fairly important corporations, then by all means let them take that route. However, the odds of that being possible (or even their ability to obtain a position leading to a position of administrative power is small if nonexistent. Flipping burgers at McDonalds, seasonal jobs picking fruit, and other low-wage menial jobs are worse than no job right now because at least in Zucotti Park it's possible to kick up enough of a stink to make your vanguard's progress easier.
I commend you. You are a living example of my little thought. But you are wrong about one thing. Everyone has access to the game. Just like you and me. The biggest problem in this country right now is that people aren't studying the system well enough to realize that. Many of them are living reactionary lives on auto pilot instead of proactive ones. The people in the parks, that's reaction not action. There is a fine line between making a point and alienation. If we cross that line it is worse than doing nothing, and we are close to jumping right over it. you can't skate to where the puck is currently because you'll miss it. You must skate to where it will be. That is what the 1% did and that's why they're in control. we all have an equal chance really...sometimes it simply takes more creativity than others.
I also agree with others in the sence a appriciate your time, but thats about all I can agree on. It´s time for you to play few games of monopoly. Play with 4 people. Give them a good advantage, or even play 3 against one. The moment one has all the power (the other players are in debt and the winners just lets you play because he is enjoying himself and enjoys getting more and more money) the game always ends the same way. One of the losers starts to cry, gets angry or the typical oeps.. and the whole game is on the floor.
I found myself playing with friends and family and I really wanted the others to be able to gain power and enjoy the game (and don´t even mind losing as long as we can enjoy the time we spend together) but then I have a brother that will sacrifice the happyness of his little daughter to win, and he is not the only one.
I´m afraid it´s time we losers pick a different game we can all enjoy again. (And don´t worry, in the meantime lots of us try to do all we can, as you explained in you Post)
