Forum Post: Tell me again why we are occupying public spaces?

We are forcefully occupying the public's spaces and creating loss of pay by closing down ports. How is this going to educate 100% of the 99% and get them to join in? They are asleep and we are doing nothing more than creating irritation and anger within them. What is the real purpose for camping out 24 hours a day? Why can't there just be assemblies and a lot of protests and then everyone go home on a daily basis? Why aren't we taking to the streets handing out informational sheets informing people of what is going on in our financial and government bodies? I understand that OWS has collected a bit of money. Why can't we rent halls etc., take to the streets handing out informational flyers with an invite to attend an assembly at one of these halls, etc.?

The issues you raise are some of the reasons I suspect OWS was set up as astro-turf from the beginning. If I wanted to start a movement, with the purpose of co-opting it, I would want the organizers to be focused on basic everyday survival in harsh conditions. I would want them to be somewhere cold and dark so when winter arrived so people wouldn't show up for meetings. I would want to saddle them with a consensus process which assured gridlock and lack of critical discussion. I would want it to be leaderless and unfocused.

We have to occupy these spaces in order to get the word out to the public. Do you honestly think the "media" would report on our protests daily? I'm not trying to be smart, but the purpose of occupying public spaces is to show that we are standing together. But, I think that we should start looking to form into one major city per state. After our numbers have grown to where we have a significant voice we should plan on Marching on Washington. It too a million men to do it years ago and its going to take that kind of effort to have any significant impact.

Handing out flyers is a good idea, I wonder why no one thought of that already. It's relatively inexpensive, should have been a no-brainer.

You have to go out to the people and not expect them to come to you. Hanging around is not going to do much. You have to put more effort in ...

Would you rather we occupied private places?

Because your non-leader leaders were sold on the idea after hanging with the Indignados. Even though they've accomplished basically squat using the same approach in Spain since May.

We need to fuck up all public places and cause havoc!
