As I write this from the southern coast of the Korean peninsula thousands have descended first onto Wall St. and then onto countless cities across the nation. An occupation of the noblest kind has begun. We call ourselves the 99%, the ones whose future and livelihood have been stolen by the unregulated capitalist system, by the greed of our corporations and their stronghold on our government. I write this as a member of the 99%. I was raised in the 1990s - arguably the best time to be a kid in America. The middle class was thriving, and I was told that if I worked hard enough I could do anything I dreamed of, including traveling to the stars themselves. Now fast forward just a couple decades and in 2010 as a fresh collegiate graduate that "you can do anything" slogan we've all heard so much suddenly has a small asterisk next to it, accompanied with pages of fine print. Crippling student loan debt, a diminishing job market, I don't need to continue, the list goes on and it's an all too familiar one for you. So what did I do? I packed my bags and moved to South Korea. I moved to a gorgeous city in a country whose economy is thriving. America had let me down and it hurt. I decided to take a break from our relationship. Now, watching from the other side of our small planet I cannot tell you the overwhelming pride I feel for my brothers and sisters, for our generation that finally is standing up and declaring that we've had enough. Our economic and political systems have failed us, but it didn't take our will and if there is one thing I learned from being an American, one thing I've learned from being a free person that is the will of the people is a powerful thing. The will of the people can topple mighty empires, it can end injustice and enact civil liberties that many today recognize as basic human rights, and it can tell corporations and their political lackeys that the 99% have had enough, and trust me when I say it will change the face of this 21st century. So keep walking, keep sitting, keep yelling, keep writing. Keep fighting 99%, you have the world behind you and we have a new world to gain.
Genuinely, sincerely, we'll try not to let you down. I feel your pain in the deepest of ways and envy your presence in South Korea. Hopefully, we can make a difference here. Keep making a great difference on the other side of the world.
Ditto busan, but I'm viewing it from Australia as an Aussie. The USA in the eyes of the world has certainly changed in the past couple of decades. Many global USA corps I've personally boycotted for decades. I refuse to many products that have infiltrated our society here. I've never been to Maccas and have not drank or eaten any Coke Cola Amital product for 30 years as a couple of examples. I thought Sth Korea was also very guilty of corps ruling the underclass with horrid conditions in factories and almost belonging to the corps even with housing?
