Forum Post: Suggest Congressional Reform

This is going around the internet and seems like something that would have (and require) the support of most Americans. Perhaps it could be brought to the media's attention through the various Occupy organizations, particularly Occupy WallStreet:

Congressional Reform Act of 2011

  1. No Tenure / No Pension.

A congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

  1. Congress (past, present and future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

  1. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

  2. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

  3. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

  4. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

  5. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective January 1, 2012.

The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

Thank you for the information on the White House Petition. If only everyone sending the email around the country the last few days realized that they could DO something by signing a petition. I signed and forwarded it to friends and family.

Emailing eachother is not accomplishing anything - I submitted this as a petition on 9-23 - see below:

Until the Petition gets 150 signatures it will not be available on the regular petition site.

It is available at http://wh.gov/gpQ

once it receives 150 signatures it will be available on http://www.WhiteHouse.gov/Petitions

When it receives 5000 signatures it will be given to the appropriate legislators to pursue.

If you are truly concerned about the state of our congress and its effect on where we are headed, please sign.

I've seen this article and think it's a great idea. Congress has been on welfare long enough. . It does seem like something that is aligned to Occupy Wall Street's overarching message: social and economic equality and transparency.
