The choice to obligate yourself to a Student Loan is a business decision, similiar to taking on debt with hopes of making a profit later. It appears on first glance, that many have assumed that everything will always "be ok" if you just follow the pack without having a backup plan if Plan A fails. We, myself included, are not entitled to this easy lifestyle that America has become. We have become a very "I want it know" generation and forget that the things we covet typically come from years and years of work by our parents and older folk. The house, the new car and the ability to travel should not be accessible to young people because there has to be a certain amount of WORK put into the system before these results can be achieved. As for the line, " there are no jobs in my field," that is hogwash. Maybe you made a bad or misfortunate choice in your education or apprenticeship, but to say you cannot find work is incorrect. Everyone is capable of doing almost any job, you were not born to be a computer analyst, or an artist, or a designer. Genetically, even the wimpy-est little "say-like," Star Bucks coffee sipping occupier can be a diesel mechanic, tire changer or dozer operator. You weren't born that way, You either choose to be like you are, because you have bad role models or watch too much TV. Think it through, dude!
So, the 1% is entitled to this easy lifestyle that we are not? Is that it? I dont know about your family, but my grandfather worked at a mine when he was young. He was able to buy a house and a car after his first year employed. Im not sure how much "work" you think needs to be put into the system, however there are many young families that dont have the time to "pay dues" that dont allow for livable wages. Im not talking about affording giant flat-screen tvs Im referring to having to choose between soap and milk for my children. I discovered that I could bust my butt at school, make straight A's and pay all of my bills for the whole semester in advance. Now I dont have to choose between milk and soap. I am majoring in Biochemistry, a lucrative career path. There is nothing easy about my life. I dont party, I dont have time to "hang out". My mother has worked all her life and still doesnt own anything. She rents and still has a car payment. How much "work" is she supposed to put into the system. I dont "travel", I have used car, and I rent. I also have two children that rely on me for support. I know I have to work for my dreams, that is a given.
I have applied for many different types of jobs. I agree that most people can do just about any job, however, most employers are not willing to hire "just anybody".
Capitalism is a hierarchy, minimum wage jobs are for high school students... I shouldn't be expected to put ketchup on a bun at McDonalds because the economy is in the shitter. That doesn't pay my bills, that won't cover the costs of my apartment, let alone the gas in my (10 year old) vehicle, nor the costs of food (which costs more % of my paycheck than ever in history). No there aren't jobs in anyones field right now. You are completely incorrect on that point. I don't know how to do manual labor, I wasn't raised to do that, I was raised to be a button pusher, this is NOT my fault. I would LOVE to know how to fix my car so I wouldn't have to go to a mechanic and pay outrageous amounts of money to fix my car. I don't want it now, I want justice for everyone. I am NOT a selfish child. I am concerned with everyone's well being, least of all my own. I am privileged to be born in the US and my only concern in life is having a space to live in and food to feed myself. That isn't I want it now. My field of work is saturated, related fields of work are saturated. I'm over educated, I'm undereducated. I don't have experience. I'm too young, employers won't hire me. I'm too old, employers won't hire me. These are not bullshit excuses for not getting a job, when we apply for jobs and get rejected these are the reasons provided to us. I know several HR reps that won't hire for all these reasons. I'm not selfish, I don't want it now.
